Today’s music scene has been saturated by big shot bands and by side projects of seasoned artists from these big shot bands. While outside of this privileged grounds, literally hundreds of bands are being formed everyday clawing their way to have a memory of their name carved into the minds of the public. And from the most unusual beginnings, a new band has risen to take on this challenge.
The story of Taken by Cars started 10 years ago when 4 unassuming high school kids coming from diverse cultural backgrounds with the same passion for music and a little knack with their musical instruments decided to form a band – Bryce Zialcita (Lead Guitars), Derek “Siopao” Chua (Guitars), Benson Yap (Bass), and Bryan Kong (Drums) were “magkabarkada” since their early elementary days. After years of covering their music gods and lingering on different genres, the band finally found a home when they were introduced to Sarah Marco (Vocals). Today, the band is focused on writing their own music and sharing it to the rest of the world. With elements ranging from their classic rock roots to their passion for modern indie music, TbC has fabricated an endearing yet daunting sound that will grip you in whichever mood you are in.
By late 2006, the band took its first steps into the public’s eye, as they started playing their own material to an audience in small gigs and productions for the very first time. Unfortunately, after just 1 short month, the band had to take a hiatus from gigging due to personal reasons. During this period, they made most of the idle time to write new materials and record more songs for their demo in preparation for their comeback in March ’07.
And comeback they did! As heralded by a guesting on Francis Brew’s highly regarded show, ‘In the Raw’ on NU107 back in February and the release of 1 of the tracks off their demo, ‘A Weeknight Memoir (in High Definition)’, the band literally took the scene by storm. ‘A Weeknight Memoir’ reached #1 on NU107’s daily countdown, ‘Stairway to Seven’ and with a growing number of their fan base, there is only one logical step to take – a full length album, which is currently in the works and is expected to be released by the end of 2007. In such a short period of time, TbC has created much buzz in the scene as the band prepares to live up to what people have labeled them to be – “The next big thing.”
