For this week Sunday Video i ask Ababil Ashari (a lo-fi-emo enthusiast/med school student) to curate this week video, and here we go, he shares some knowledge and his favorite videos for you. Enjoy this week theme “Emo”

01. Jimmy Eat World – “Rockstar”

2nd generation Jimmy Eat World is my absolute favorite emo band. For me, Jimmy Eat World’s take on emo, especially during the Capitol years, is the most honest and unpretentious version out there.

You really know what it feels like to bare your soul as an aspiring musican in your teens? Well this song “Rockstar” is IT. It’s no surprise why these guys are the longest surviving, consitantly producing emo band out there. They’ve been doing this since 1994!

Fuck Tokio Hotel, THIS is emotion.

———————————————————————————————-

02. Say Anything – “Hate Everyone [live on Jimmy Fallon]“

These days people who try to be “emo”, don’t really get it and is retarded.

It’s about expressing YOURSELF, NOT following whatever eyeliner, vampire, spiky belt, etc. trend, and no one expresses himself better than Max Bemis of 3rd generation emo band Say Anything. This man is my personal idol. Everything song he writes is a reflection of who he is.

He is an ironic, intense and passionate man. Therefore, this song is too.

———————————————————————————————–

03. Never Give Up Nobita – “Quit School to Buy a Doll for Your Valentine (live)”

The best indonesian synth-band in existance as of 2010. Don’t let Pee Wee Gaskins, etc. fool you into thinking they’re awesome. They are not awesome.

Never Give Up Nobita IS.

———————————————————————————————-

04. Shorthand Phonetics – “Today Adam Gets His Hair Cut” [live acoustic rehearsal]

NARCIIIIIIISSSSSSS! WOOT! :p

Oh yeah i have a new album lol download sini yaa…wkwkwkwk

yesnowave.com/?p=301

lol.

———————————————————————————————-

05. Million Dead – “After the Rush Hour”

“But all i found were different flags/double-speaking diplomats/i dont have time for that/so i declare my own sovereign state”

Most awesome lyric about individuality ever.

———————————————————————————————-

06. Broadway – “I’m on a Boat (Live @ the Marquee on 9-6-09)”

Lately, the trend in third generation (or starting the fourth already?) emo is self-parody…and this is the epitome of that.

Essentially a parody of a parody, this Broadway perfomance takes modern emo’s tendency for self-loathing and depression and takes it’s antonymical extreme. Therefore: Awesome!

“I’M ON A BOAT MOTHERFUCKER/DONT YOU EVER FORGET!!!”

Also find the original version by The Lonely Island (feat. T-Pain) (which is a parody of boast rap)

———————————————————————————————-

07. Algernon Cadwallader – “Casual Discussion In A Dome Between Two Temples (live in Philadelphia, PA)”

2nd Gen revivalists Algernon Cadwallader is the best band you’ve never heard of. Taking influence from 2nd gen heroes like Cap’n Jazz, etc. they are blazing their own trail this 3rd gen dominated world.

Don’t know Cap’n Jazz?

————————————————————————————————

08. Cap’n Jazz – “Take On Me”

This is Cap’n Jazz.

Covering A-Ha.

————————————————————————————————-

09. The Get Up Kids – “No Love {@ Groezrock 2009)”

2nd gen late-comers turned 3rd gen elder statesmen, The Get Up Kids are the perfect sample to describe the transition from then to now. And they’re on a comeback tour!

Woot!

————————————————————————————————-

10. Minus The Bear – Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse (Live at Melweg)

This is the band i’ve been listening to most lately. Arguebly this is my favorite band, for now at least. It has a 2nd gen-3rd gen transitional feel with a heavy math-rock influence…

but really…this is just EPIC WIN.

————————————————————————————————————-

Bonus vid.

Rites of Spring – “All There Is”

THIS IS THE FIRST EMO BAND. FIRST GENERATION RIGHT HERE!

Iya. Emo2x yg dibahas di sini kebanyakan adalah emo MTV2 (generasi 2000-an). Bukan emo underground akhir 80-an / awal 90-an.

Hey, apakah ada anak emo di sini yang notice sama ben yang namanya Heroin? Hehe…
