Meet Jonna Lee a Swedish pop sweetheart with beautiful voices, the album “10 Pieces, 10 Bruises” out last year, sounded like a mixtures of American folk with light Swedish indie pop. Here a brief question and answer with her.
how are you now ?
Good thanks, very busy recording my new record while playing shows and promoting my debut one. Me and two friends have just finished building a studio out of our rehearsal space in Stockholm, so that’s here I’m recording. It’s great! though it has somewhat of a weird smell that we’re working on removing.
if you have to describe your music in one sentences, what would that be ? One sentense?
Warm and cool pop music with nerves.
how is the music scene in your country?
The music scene in Sweden is very much alive and vivid right now. Lots of new bands pop up and people talk about a new Scandinavian sound. I’m not sure what this means though. Hard to be objective. We’re producing lots of great music at the moment though. Lovely!
top five songs on your playlist now?
Midlake - Young Bride (from Trials of Van Occupanther)
Ed Harcourt - Lachrymosity (myspace demo)
Leona Naess - Heavy like sunday (forthcoming album Thirteens)
Håkan Hellström - För en lång lång tid (from new record För send för edelweiss)
Travis - Big chair (from latest album The boy with no name)
what is the best record you bought in the last 6 months?
Radiohead’s “In Rainbows”.
I guess everyone knows Radiohead. I’m a proud owner of this record. It’s a complete record with a fantastic production (Nigel Godrich) and lovely melodies. They are one of our times greatest bands.
how’s the songwriting usually done?
The way I write songs? I have a golden lyric book that i fill with my thoughts and worries. I then sit by the piano, the drums or with my guitar and make music for these lyrics, that often were given a melody that I’ve kept in my head since i wrote them. Then I record this right away with my fiancé Claes Björklund. He’s the coolest producer, and my band. Or as soon as they’re availible…
You covered the Postal Service’s song, is that somekind of strategy? or you just simply like it?
Em oh you mean that one could gain publicity by covering an already made hit song and make it an acoustic, stripped down version? It’s very common these days indeed. Well, i have a week spot for Ben Gibbard. He’s somewhat my all time favorite songwriter. I just wanted to make my version of DC sleeps.. I have some very strange but loving memories to that song. When the postal service released it I was in a weird state and couldn’t stop listening to it. Then i Started playing it live to finally record it in my kitchen. This was quite a while ago now though.
last words?
Well even though downloading is fun and all, I think you should buy my record. It’s really quite lovely.
best, Jonna lee
