Listening to Modular’s music is like a journey back to a time when lounge and space-age pop were present on almost every soundtrack and TV show. This track is their own rendition of the great song Femme Fatale by The Velvet Underground, taken from a recent free EP called Yoga Para Extraterrestres (which you can download from here). Don’t miss Requiem Para Robert Moog, another great track from this EP.

Exciting new trio Otouto from Melbourne have released a new single called Astronauts on their own artist collective label Two Bright Lakes. You may recognise singer Hazel Brown’s voice from Whitley’s song Killer. So catchy.

Eddie – Gafieira No Avenida
One of the founders of the mangue beat movement in northeast Brazil in the 90s, Eddie play a mixture of frevo (a kind of folk music usually related to carnival), rock and jazz. Gafieira No Avenida is taken from the band’s latest album, Carnaval No Inferno (“Carnival In Hell”) and highlights some of Eddie’s influences, such as Fela Kuti and Lee Perry.

There are all kinds of great power-pop bands from decades past that could be referenced when talking about Yukon Blonde. But you know what? As songs like Rather Be With You show, Yukon Blonde are a lot more than their influences, and it’s not hard to imagine that it won’t be long before future bands are referencing them as an influence.

Inverness – Nubes
Inverness has its heart divided between Santiago and England. The band flirts a lot with shoegaze revivalism but succeeds in avoiding a lame emulation of the sound, instead delivering a rich, lyrical world full of dreamy scenes. Their second album Illuminaciones was inspired by the far-away landscapes of southern Chile and received massive critical acceptance last year. The band faces the challenge of doing it again for the release of their next album this year.

CHINA: Wooozy
PB33 – Dance With Me
Formed in 2005, PB33 independently released their first album Disco Boys & Girls Night Out. It’s about youth, happiness, love, life, friendship and party. They are a band with a punk attitude. Are you ready for them?

COLOMBIA: Colombia Urbana
ChocQuibTown – En Circulo (Sa Rissa)
ChocQuibTown is the most successful urban fusion group in Colombia with two Latin Grammy nominations. The band try to mix hip hop music with native sounds of the Pacific coast. Their new album Oro has just been released.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
The Bronson Brothers – Ancient Land
Pop, decadence, France and the 1960s are keywords when it comes to Clyde and Ted Bronson’s musical universe. The excellent Ancient Land is taken from the duo’s freshly-released debut album The Melody Bronson, the title a nod to the 1971 concept album Histoire De Melody Nelson by Serge Gainsbourg, who is also found among The Bronson Brothers’ influences.

ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
Stairs To Korea – All Of Your Friends
The awesome one-man band and king of the offbeat tweets, Stairs To Korea is a battery of lo-fi electronic effects, good tunes, wry lyrics and ace guitar solos. And behind his bushy beard there’s a reluctant rock god edging his way out. His new single All Of Your Friends, on the excellent Brainlove Records, is another in the gradual drip-feed of fine releases which should eventually see him with one of the best singles compilations of 2012.

ESTONIA: Popop
Honey Power – Get Country
This light, fresh and melodic indie tune from four-piece Honey Power carries a real country vibe and, as an early taste of the Tartu-based band’s long-anticipated second album, demonstrates good taste and an impeccable arrangement.

FINLAND: Glue
Flannelmouth – Sharp Paper
Sharp Paper gently opens Flannelmouth’s second album and leads the Helsinki indie band into a collection of intense and diverse pop songs, with intelligent arrangements and a good sense of melody, underlined by the dominant voice of vocalist Tuomo Kuusi. Rather than limiting themselves to the classic four or five-piece band template, Flannelmouth draw their songs with a diverse palette including subtle sounds of ukulele, pedal steel and a variety of other instruments to build an addictive romanticism.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Saycet – Easy
Saycet is a French electronic artist made famous by his album One Day At Home in 2006. Pierre Lefeuvre, the man behind Saycet, is a daydream music specialist. His songs carry the listener away in a cocoon universe where nothing can hurt you and every little noise is a delight.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Kissogram – Rubber And Meat
The death of German indie labels continues. This month Berlin-based Louisville closed its doors, leaving a bunch of the most influential and significant German bands on their own. One of these is Kissogram, whose last album Rubber And Meat got a lot of positive reviews. To bid a fond farewell to Louisville, we are able to present its title track exclusively. Thanks for all the music!

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
Electric Litany – February
Preferring patience and restraint over explosive blasts of atmospheric wailing, Electric Litany slowly build up tunes that glimmer with hauntingly melodic ideas and climax with rhythms that capture the traditional musical heritage of Eastern European countries. Their debut album, How To Be A Child & Win The War, offers a sonically cinematic experience that will leave you feeling both elated and emotionally drained. Gorgeous sounds are pulled from within the deepest recesses of the human soul, while vocals full of intuitive swells and fades rise over piano, synths and tremolo guitars. Sometime, a band formed by Icelandic music veterans, puts catchy dance-infused songs on the menu. Ingredients are the strong voice of frontwoman Diva De La Rosa plus the inventive drums of TheDanni, flavoured by turntable whizzkid DJ Moonshine and manipulated by Oculus. You can taste it while listening to the single Heart Of Spades from the album Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

INDIA: Indiecision
The Circus – FOPS
The Circus are an alternative rock act from New Delhi. The band’s music is Incubus-inspired, effects-driven fuzz that makes no bones about what it is and where it finds its roots. FOPS (an abbreviation of Full On Party Scene) comes from soon-to-be-released debut album From Space. It’s wholesome, angular alternative music executed without much fuss. Turn it up, get your party started.

IRELAND: Nialler9
The Cast Of Cheers – Derp
The Cast Of Cheers came from nowhere last month and quickly became Nialler9’s favourite new band. Their downloadable album (get it for free here) is a fully-formed 33-minute blast of post-punk, looping post-rock, tightly-wound songs with echoes of Battles, Foals and Death From Above 1979.

ISRAEL: Metal Israel
Orphaned Land – Sapari
Orphaned Land’s latest album The Never Ending Way Of ORWarriOR is a sonic tapestry that flies a completely different path than the usual Western metal fare of Europe and the States, though there are common threads. The influence of acts such as Paradise Lost, Iron Maiden and The Beatles are evident, but Orphaned Land weave elements together that run the gamut from blacker-than-black demonic intensity to let-the-sunshine-in hippie flamboyance. The band categorizes itself as Middle Eastern progressive metal with dreams of instilling peace through their music.

ITALY: Polaroid
Heike Has The Giggles – Robot
Before you ask, the name comes from a character in an English grammar book the band used to read at high school. Heike Has The Giggles are three young kids who play sharp and dry rock ‘n’ roll in the vein of PJ Harvey and early Gossip. They just released Sh!, their forceful debut album, and you can’t listen to it without starting to dance and play air guitar.

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
Omodaka – Kyoteizinc (Video Mix)
Known as an electro/techno artist, Soichi Terada teamed up with a few visual directors and has started the collaborative music project Omodaka. Omodaka’s sound is characterized by the seamless mixture of Japanese traditional Geisha songs and electro music. Omodaka will appear live at the Japan Nite showcase at this month’s SXSW and will also go on tour the US with Red Bacteria Vacuum and Okamoto’s.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa
Los Macuanos – Pueblo Muerto (feat. Scout Klas)
Is there such a thing as ethno-dubstep? London’s urban soundscape has been well charted by dubstep – how about Tijuana’s? Los Macuanos are a duo formed by Moises “Moih” Horta and Moises Lopez, and this is their nu-electronic post-nortec mix of blurry Mexican folkloric crumbs with cyclic dubstep. Pueblo Muerto was recorded by Moih and gloomy artist Scout Klas (from Sweden via Vietnam) in his recent visit to the Red Bull Music Academy in London. The song portraits the hypnotic fumes spreading from ghost town Tijuana to the whole stratosphere.

NETHERLANDS: Amsterdam Event Guide
The Stutters – Starlight Love
Top musicians as well as first-class artists, this three-piece group have it all going for them in 2010: new songs, more gigs, screaming fans and some very fancy dancing. After the critically-acclaimed first EP back in 2008, their 2010 release Viva La Stutters has got a lot of people excited. First listens see the trio go for a slightly heavier feel than their previous singles but they still stay true to their indie-rock sensibilities, keeping it very rock ‘n’ roll and danceable. Make sure you catch them on their European tour scheduled for early June – we’ll be at the front!

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
An Emerald City – Seizuretron
An Emerald City’s first album Circa Scaria is the stuff of legend, being recorded in a cave on a storm-swept coast. Even without that back story their music is memorable for combining a traditional rock line-up with lute, violin, tablas, violin and sitar. Their songs start off quiet then build in scale and grandeur to create huge Eastern-influenced instrumental soundscapes. Surprisingly, Circa Scaria reached the New Zealand top 40. After a few months in Berlin, An Emerald City have released Seizuretron as a taster for their forthcoming second album.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Solvor Vermeer – Final Hour
Three years ago, I stumbled upon Solvor Vermeer’s music. I was amazed by the delicate and fragile beauty she managed to create with only her voice and the piano as her tools. Since then, Vermeer has developed her sound. She has a rare gift for composing and can make something really complex become catchy and accessible. On her upcoming four-track debut EP, her sound is richer and more orchestrated, with her musician friends having added strings, horns, layered vocals, glockenspiel, etc. The EP will be released this spring on her own Bloksberg Music label in partnership with UK-based Lazy Acre Records.

PERU: SoTB
Pipe Villaran – Sinnerman
When members of the band Los Fuckin Sombreros went their separate ways, Pipe Villaran began to compose new songs, preparing for what would be his new project, called Long Player. His style is still rock ‘n’ roll, to which he has devoted his whole life, influenced by classic rock and some blues touches. Sinnerman is a preview of the direction his new band will take when their debut record is launched in May.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Peltzer – A Story To Tell Me
Peltzer used to be Rui Gaio’s one-man band. Today, there are more members but they continue with their electronic sound and cite the new wave movement, Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips as their influences. They have released tracks digitally and on three Portuguese compilations. A Story To Tell Me, from their new Outdated EP, is an exclusive MAP download.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
Hot Casandra – Chroma
Hot Casandra is a new project behind which we can find Paul Ballo (the drummer of last month’s featured band, Kumm). It’s a personal playground, where no compromises will be made and everything will sound as wanted. The first song, Chroma, is a dark electro track with beautiful, haunting vocals.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
Admiral Fallow – Squealing Pigs
It’s hard to say what Admiral Fallow’s greatest strength is. It could be the luscious melodies which burst out of their songs, or the thick Scottish brogue that defines Louis Abbott’s strikingly unhurried delivery, or perhaps it’s the fact they have the sort of craft and invention their peers could only dream of. MAP exclusive download Squealing Pigs whisks through the speakers with a bundle of verve and is taken from the band’s forthcoming debut album Boots Met My Face, which at times sounds a lot like Elbow.

SINGAPORE: I’m Waking Up To…
Sidd & His Self-Esteem – Occupation
I’ve been informed that the frontman of Sidd & His Self-Esteem is a nervous individual, so much so that it inspired the naming of the band. Well, if Sidd finds his solace in the sheer gregariousness of his other band members, then this must surely be a case of strength in numbers. All inhibitions seemingly fall away as they deliver brilliantly on this stellar Led Zeppelin-esque track, with confidence swelling in each instrument and the vocals deliberate and full of conviction. Occupation pays homage to lo-fi garage rock, with the mix perfectly balanced for your ears to take in everything.

SOUTH AFRICA: Musical Mover & Shaker!
Will Mono – Seks Vir Plesier
What Will Mono does when making music is slightly different to most – he collaborates with other artists by adding their vocals to his music. In this case Will Mono worked with Jan Joknie and Seks Vir Plesier was born. It is Afrikaans electro-pop at its best. Draw conclusions where you will with regards to the content but as for the song as a whole, it’s catchy electro genius.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
3rd Line Butterfly – Nine Days
3rd Line Butterfly has been one of the most loved Korean indie-rock bands since 2002, when their music became known through drama series Ruler Of Your Own World. Following the release of their third album in 2004, the band went on a long hiatus, returning only late last year. Earlier this month, their out-of-print albums were re-released in remastered versions, but Nine Days is a beautiful, melancholic Americana-style folk track from new EP Nine Days Or A Million.

SPAIN: Oscuro Magazine
The Closers – Come Down
The Closers are an industrial rock band from Zaragoza similar to Nine Inch Nails or Filter. Their first work was called The End and is a preview of four songs from their forthcoming debut album. It is a very catchy and addictive work that could make a real impact beyond our borders. Come Down has touches of Primal Scream, but the powerful guitars and killer choruses are more like the best works of Trent Reznor.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
Holy Family – Whatever There’s To Know
Holy Family is an electronica trio from Goteborg. The fuzzy beats and glowering vocals on their song Meathooks remind me of some of the heavy industrial music from the late 80s and early 90s, while the lighter, more accessible sounds on Whatever There’s To Know hint at a band that could expand their sound and possibly cross over.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I’m Floating
Javelin – Vibrationz
Javelin are an eclectic duo currently residing in Brooklyn by way of Providence, Rhode Island. Their electronic jams have been turning heads for quite some time, yet their upcoming LP, No Mas, and tour dates with Yeasayer will catapult this funky duo to the forefront of independent acclaim.

VENEZUELA: Barquisimento
Los Paranoias – No Sueltes Al Murcielago
Los Paranoias have a sound that resembles the 80s post-punk and 60s Britpop scenes. No Sueltes Al Murcielago is the second single from their album Aqui Fue, which was inspired by the troubled times our country is going through. The song is a happy rock ‘n’ roll tune with a contagious rhythm – a symbol of Venezuelan optimism.

Satu lagi band yang dapat disebut super group dengan personel Jimi Multhazam (Vokalis The Upstairs) Pandu Fathoni (Gitaris The Porno), Bramasta Juan Sasongko (bass JARB) Freddie Alexander Warnerin (drum Nervous Breakdown), mereka memainkan musik dengan gitar berdistorsi kotor dan bising seperti band-band alternatif tahun 90′an, bass yang melodius dan semuanya itu diaransemen menjadi sebuah musik pop-bising-ringan-namun-berkualitas-baik.

Coup de Neuf is back! mengawali tahun 2010 dengan edisinya yang keenam, ada yang berbeda dengan Coup de Neuf kali ini. Jika kita terbiasa dengan konsep acara yang tematik (let’s say rock edition, electro edition), kali ini Coup de Neuf membawakan sesuatu yang lebih universal. Sebut saja Leach Me Lemonade, Bite, The Experience, Lipstik Lipsing dan The Trees and The Wild yang menjadi line up kali ini, semua berkumpul dalam satu acara yang memang selalu mengundang minat komunitas musik indie ini.

Leach Me Lemonade, sebuah band asal Bandung mengawali acara yang diadakan di CCF pada hari sabtu tanggal 27 februari itu. walaupun tidak ada suguhan visual dari Openlabs, namun penampilan manis mereka dipercantik dengan lighting yang cukup membuat performance mereka lebih menarik. Sebuah start yang pas, dengan aliran musik mereka yang cenderung pop sehungga dapat diterima oleh kuping para penonton CCF. Ketika Bite tampil sebagai performer kedua, sang vokalis wanita tersebut mengucapkan rasa rindunya pada Kota Bandung. Gaya unik dan tutur kata yang menarik membuat penonton tersenyum bahkan tertawa. Sebut saja “Devide”, “Ksatria”, “Menulis”, “SSWC”, dan “Binayef” dengan mulus dibawakan mereka dan membuat suasana makin hangat. Penampilan ketiga merupakan penampilan dari The Experience. Dengan hanya beranggotakan dua orang tanpa membawa additional player, dan dengan gaya yang cukup nyeleneh namun sangat atraktif, The Experience mampu memancing semangat penonton melalui lagu-lagu mereka, “She’s Allright”, “Young Men”, “The way I am”, “Rock and Roll Style”, “Little Pony” dan “Stompboxes”. Disambung dengan penampilan dari Lipstik Lipsing, sebuah band asal semarang. Tidak salah mereka datang jauh-jauh dari kota tersebut, karena sebuah atmosfir baru tentunya terasa, karena tidak ada yang menyangka bahwa penampilan mereka patut diacungi jempol. “Room For Outside”, “Early Express”, “Puerto Rico”, “Suburban Love”, dan “If Only”. Sesuai dengan pernyataan mereka, mereka memanglah bukan band pop mentah tahun 90-an.

However, sepertinya sebutan primadona malam itu memang patut diberikan kepada The Trees and The Wild. Sebagai band penutup, penonton dibuat kagum dengan lagu-lagu mereka. “Berlin” menjadi lagu pembuka mereka pada malam itu. “Malino”, kemudian “Irish Girl” yang menjadi penutup penampilan mereka ternyata mengundang penonton untuk berteriak Encore! Encore! Lagi! Lagi! sehingga mereka kembali lagi dan membawakan satu lagu mereka yang berjudul “Fight The Future”. Permainan gitar apik, perkusi dan ditunjang backing vocal wanita yang cukup dominan menjadi magnet tersendiri bagi para penonton CCf tersebut. Penampilan mereka ditutup dengan ucapan Iga, sang gitaris yang berkata, “Terima kasih Bandung, tampaknya kita akan tidur nyenyak malam ini.”

Secara keseluruhan, walaupun kebanyakan para pengisi acara Coup de Neuf #6 ini merupakan wajah-wajah baru, tidak mengurangi semarak dan kesuksesan acara ini. Terima kasih, sampai bertemu di acara Coup de Neuf selanjutnya!!!

Duo indie-pop asal Swedia ini, baru saja jalan-jalan ke Brazil, terus belanja album-album dari bagian Barat Afrika tahun ‘70-an, lalu berkolaborasi dengan perkusionis dari Kuba, dan diproduseri oleh Jari Haapalainen (The Concretes, Camera Obscura, Ed Harcourt).

Hasilnya adalah lagu-lagu hangat dengan beat dan rythm Afrika terpadu dengan manis nya Swedish Pop, yang akan dimasukan ke dalam album baru berjudul “The People’s Records” yang direncanakan untuk release bulan May nanti.

Rock n’ roll kasar, a’la The Stooges yang kemudian dikenal sebagai garage rock, dan membuat banyak sekali remaja-remaja di awal dekade kemarin berjaket kulit dan menyatakan diri sebagai anak rock n’ roll dan menggunakan jaket kulit, sambil memainkan riff-riff gitar yang hampir serupa dan suara-suara serak seperti habis mabuk.

Dan The Jims tidak banyak berbeda daripada band-band tersebut, tidak ada sesuatu yang baru dan belum banyak terasa karakter nya sebagai band.

Diharapkan, dengan semakin mudahnya memperoleh referensi di era internet dan download mur-mer ini, semoga mereka bisa membuat sesuatu yang lebih oke, daripada cuma sekedar garage rock KW-3 yang berteriak mengenai kenyataan hidup.

Band konseptual asal Inggris, buah dari kekreatifan nya Damon Albarn ini ternyata masih memiliki terobosan-terobosan yang bisa dibilang asoi didunia hiburan.
Walaupun anggota band nya terdiri dari karakter kartun, namun mereka memiliki kemasan dan teknik promosi yang menarik, seperti membuat berbagai macam video teaser yang menggunakan tehnik-tehnik animasi oke, seperti yang bisa kamu lihat disini.

Album ini tampaknya masih akan dominan trip-hop, dengan kolaborasi-kolaborasi bersama artis-artis hip-hop, namun dengan konsep yang lebih cinematik.

Nobita, the perennial loser. For forty-odd years now, the anime/manga character has been associated with getting beat-up by the school bully, getting a big-fat-zero on your test and getting bested by your environment despite being doted on by a futuristic blue robot cat from the future. And now in our 21st century existence, a chiptune/pop-punk band has joined the fight to prop-up our pathetic protagonist… Never Give Up Nobita!

“As you might know, Nobita is portrayed as stupid, weak and quick to give in […] so we wanted to make music to jump-start Nobita and people like him,” explains Abud (guitar/vox) about the premise of Never Give Up Nobita. And that’s what Abud, Egi (guitar/vox), Ferdi (bass), Zicko (synths) and Dicky (drums/programming) has lived up to using their enthusiastic recorded output and energetic live shows.

Since their inception in 2007, the band has released two freely downloadable hormonally-charged singles. The first of these was a track quizzically, yet deliciously, titled “Quit School To Buy A Doll For Your Valentine”. This sugary cane of a third-generation-emo 8-bit pop-punk track was surprisingly recorded under the modest circumstances in a very short-time. “From 10 am to 10 pm,” elaborated Abud recalling the process of recording the YCMK/Motion City Soundtrack influenced home-made track with Egi and ex-member Adrian.

Now, with a song-in-hand Abud and Egi went out to the major hang-out places in Bandung and proceeded to distribute the song themselves. “Some people actually referred to us as “The Bluetooth Band” confessed Abud referring to the main mode of distribution in the early days of Never Give Up Nobita.

Luckily the song gained traction on their MySpace, and their Bluetooth-heavy salad days are over. And now Abud and Egi was tasked with assembling a stable line-up of musicians to showcase their songs on the Bandung indie circuit (which is made up of high-school and university fairs).

And now after a long time of searching, the line-up was complete. Abud and Egi managed to acquire richly-influenced bassist Ferdi, which jumped ship from L.A. Lights Indiefest finalist Vickyvette citing “bad communication and then musical differences”. Jazz-drummer Dicky, who’s been playing since “third grade of elementary school”, joined afterwards. And finally, amateur synthesizer player Zicko came in, who started out as a fan but somehow found his way into the line-up in a cool act of fanboy ascension.

And with this line-up they went in the studio to record their masterful Taking Back Sunday/T-Pain send-up “High School Wouldn’t Feel Much Better”. Of course the track doesn’t neglect the Never Give Up Nobita trademark: the 8-bit keyboard sounds. Bye this time, the programming torch has passed to…the drummer! “Most of our 8-bit stuff is made by [Dicky],” says Abud. “Yes!” replied Zicko expressing appreciation for the drummer/programmer.

The “High School…” track pretty much embodies the Never Give Up Nobita sound: Abud and Egi’s nasal whine yelping lyrics about the care-free romance of high-school, while a pop-punk rhythm section, held down by Ferdi’s bass, wails on in the background. This bedrock is colored by passages of lyrical synth playing by Zicko interspersed with the bleeps and bloops of Dicky’s programming. It is a sound that is unique and immensely familiar at the same time. Their sound is actually quite similar to another leading synth/pop-punk band. A fact not lost on the members of Never Give Up Nobita.

“Yeah, I think Pee Wee [Gaskins]’ music is good,” said wise Ferdi. “They’re a cool band,” added Abud with a knowing glint. As a matter of fact, only high-strung newbie Zicko has something mildly critical of their contemporary. “Well, they’re kind of arrogant, aren’t they?” said Zicko rhetorically.

Never Give Up Nobita has no choice but to at least respect what Pee Wee Gaskins did for the all-things-synth scene currently enjoying a peak in the Indonesian music scene. But this band doesn’t only wish to be a mid-tier follower…

“Yes, Never Give Up Nobita can be massively successful” said Ferdi. “We got great and unique songs that are solid and so us!” added Zicko. “With hard work,” reminded Dicky. Immediately afterwards Agun exclaimed…

Foto dari konser L.A. Lights Concert Placebo live in concert yang diselenggarakan oleh JAVA Musikindo di Tennis Indoor Senayan, 16 Februari 2010 kemaren.

Setelah bertahun-tahun ingin menonton mereka, akhirnya Mr.Adrie Subono membuat konsernya juga disini, dengan promosi super gencar dari twitternya, saya jadi tahu kalau Placebo membawa 10 ton perlengkapan untuk manggung, yang walau begitu tidak memenuhi ekspektasi saya yang mungkin terlalu tinggi.

Karena sudah mendengarkan mereka dari album pertama, dan karena berbagai hal, ketinggalan informasi dan tidak sempat membeli album Battle for the Sun sampai dengan beberapa hari sebelum acara.

Saya jadi terlalu berharap mereka membawakan lagu-lagu lama, yang ternyata mereka lebih memilih membawakan repertoir lagu-lagu baru, dan bereksperimen dengan mengubah aransemen lagu-lagu lama seperti “every you every me”, “Special K” dan “Taste in Men”.

Namun begitu konser kemarin tetap berkesan, karena saya mengubah ekspektasi saya setelah encore. :) dan repertoir lagu-lagu baru mereka bisa dibilang oke juga.

Karena malas membawa kamera DSLR, saya memotret mereka menggunakan kamera ponsel, dan ini lah beberapa hasilnya.

Eloisa Lopez – Espiral
This is one of Zonaindie’s favorite tracks from 2009. It was taken from Eloisa’s third album, Por Un Paisaje. Maybe we like her so much because she manages to elegantly combine acoustic textures with native South American percussions and digital sounds. Espiral is a great example of this, and yet an unbelievably catchy tune that has Leo García as a guest vocalist. What else could you ask for?

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Kite Club – Royal Gums
Royal Gums is one of those tracks that grabs you straight away and drags you along for three minutes thanks to its chanting hooks and penchant for large-scale production. It opens with a beat lifted from Psychocandy and an explosion of layered vocals but then settles into a calming, meditative refrain, just letting the melody and harmonies carry the song. Kite Club (aka Nicholas Futcher) marries the laptop trickery to the tune without letting it control the song nor detract from its melodic core.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Barulhista – Indieota
When it comes to avant-garde music in Brazil, Barulhista (which means something like “noise follower”) is certainly an artist to keep an eye on. His electro-acoustic sounds encompass experimental electronica and more concrete music both in his solo songs and in the soundtracks he composes. Indiota (a mix of “indie” and “idiot” in Portuguese) is as close to pop as he has ever been.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
Novels – No Hard Feelings
A supergroup of sorts featuring members of Born Ruffians, Tokyo Police Club and Will Currie & The Country French among others, Novels quietly released their self-titled debut EP into the world around Christmas. As No Hard Feelings (not to mention the other four tracks) demonstrates, it totally lives up to its pedigree. The album is full of catchy, 70s-inspired pop and it makes the EP well worth a (free!) download.

CHILE: Super 45
Moreno – Pica
Moreno is the new darling of Chilean indie-rock. With a powerful and psychedelic sound, Giancarlo Landini’s project – he plays every instrument on record and has a backing band for live shows – is inspired by lo-fi legends such as Lou Barlow (Sebadoh), J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) and Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices), with a classic flavor.

CHINA: Wooozy
Mosaic – Sunshine Train
Mosaic are one of the new generation of bands from Chengdu. They were called GT6 before they changed their name in 2008. At the end of last year they successfully completed a tour of China through 10 cities. Although they haven’t released a full-length album, they are definitely worth a listen.

COLOMBIA: Colombia Urbana
Rayo y Toby – Manitas Mágicas
After trying with different partners, Rayo and Toby finally realized they themselves were the perfect combination. The duo mix good urban music with a shot of melody and their approach is both fresh and unsettling.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
Before The Show – Gabriel
Before The Show was originally a solo project by multi-instrumentalist Laurids Smedegaard, who often worked on his own songs just hours before he went on stage with any one of the numerous other bands he’s involved in (hence the band name). Now a quintet, Before The Show are working on getting their debut released and until that happens we can all enjoy this excellent taste of what’s to come.

ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
Jose Vanders – For Now
Jose Vanders is a piano-playing chanteuse who is less eccentric than Regina Spektor and smarter than Kate Nash, but with even more doe-eyed, curly-haired cuteness. For Now shows off her gift for melody and picture-book lyrics, albeit on a ukulele instead of her usual piano. Jose has released three exquisite EPs in each of the past three years, aged 17, 18 and 19. Surely fame beckons at 20.

ESTONIA: Popop
Barthol Lo Mejor – Windshield Pfeiffer
Barthol Lo Mejor makes popdada music – experiments with electro rhythms and unconventional sounds including pieces of conversations, cliches, old movies and anime cartoons. His music is considered effective for recovering from hard drug addiction. Windshield Pfeiffer is part of the K8 MOSH EP, available for free download here

FINLAND: Glue
Kiki Pau – An Old Song
After their well-receive debut Let’s Rock, Kiki Pau return with a fantastic sophomore album to be released in early March. A MAP exclusive, An Old Song is the opening track of White Mountain and shows a more guitar-driven band with uplifting spirits. Those following the Nordic indie scene will hear about this band quite a lot this year because the whole album is a keeper that channels the classic sound of T.Rex, The Velvet Underground and left-field US guitar gods such as Pavement and Guide By Voices without forgetting a twist of Finnish pop.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Satine – Iron Güm
Drawing inspiration from northern poptronica (Under Byen, Mùm, Efterklang) and electro rock bands (Radiohead, The Notwist), Satine gave birth to their first intimate yet powerful tracks in 2004. Live, the band unfolds a dreamlike visual universe with video projections and light shows that make every concert a unique experience. But it’s always deep, beautiful and organic.

GERMANY – Blogpartei
Napoli Is Not Nepal – People Call It Mantra
Napoli Is Not Nepal is the solo project of Cologne-based Hendryk Martin. What he calls ‘electro nihilism’, I’d call outstanding ambient electro with some eclectic moments. Although People Call It Mantra was released in mid-2009 as part of the album Boredom Is Always Counterrevolutionary, it’s still quite a statement for the growing influence of music that sits between ambient and indie.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
Etten – Clockwork Skies
Etten, former lead singer of the Greek band Film, weaves her tales of hope and dreams in a warm bearskin coat of pop sensibilities. Her voice offers the moods ‘light and shade’, while production touches colorfully paint enchanting pictures. Dark, but never needlessly so, I Know You’re Behind Me But I’m Not Scared is an intoxicating, addictive debut that offers a rich, distinct world of lullabies, spacey timbres and ghostly beauty. It blends brittle, 80s-influenced electro and Knife-inspired synths with buzzing basslines, guitars and samples in a sound that’s both atmospheric and richly textured.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Mammut – Svefnsykt
Mammut were formed in 2003 by two boys and three girls, aged 14-16. David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine called them “a really good band”. They played SXSW in 2007 and toured with dEUS in Iceland and Germany. In 2008, Mammut released their second album, Karkari, through Icelandic label Record Records. Svefnsykt was its first single.

INDIA: Indiecision
Noush Like Sploosh – 3 Act Circus
Noush Like Sploosh is one of the most promising hopefuls of India’s growing, urban singer-songwriter scene. Armed with a dry wit and a musical sensibility falling somewhere between Regina Spektor and Imogen Heap, Noush Like Sploosh’s music is refreshing indie-pop that’s lyrical yet largely accessible. 3 Act Circus brings together myriad references, a laid-back ambient pop vibe and Ms Sploosh’s positively delectable vocals.

IRELAND: Nialler9
Autumn Owls – Raindrops In The River
Autumn Owls are a Dublin four-piece who have been honing their brand of nocturnal atmospheric rock songs since 2006. With two burgeoning and impressive EPs released and a debut album on the way, the band will travel to Austin this year to play the SXSW festival. Watch out for these guys in 2010.

ITALY: Polaroid
København Store – Strangers
The main quality of København Store’s music is its ability to build a layered and monumental sound with an incredibly strong emotional impact. There is something vast about the band, as if they could throw their songs for miles and miles. Strangers is taken from the forthcoming release, Hi. The new album will be the first chapter of a trilogy.

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
LITE – The Sun Sank
LITE are one of the most enthusiastic live bands in Tokyo. They are often compared to Battles and Mogwai, and combine math-rock power and precision with emotionally-charged compositions. They will be doing a U.S. west coast tour with Mike Watt & The Missingmen in March. The Sun Sank is taken from their latest EP, Turns Red.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa
Furland – Quiero Ser Un Color
Furland are famous for having a huge grass-ball on stage, this Mexico City quartet dream of tripping to a place where strawberry fields stretch forever. On their proper debut, La Historia de la Luz, they explore the eternal message of love through light, sound… and a banjo. Quiero Ser Un Color is the first single off a 360-degree work filled with lush orchestrations, majestic vibes and acidic lyrics stuffed with cotton candy – food for thought.

NETHERLANDS: Amsterdam Event Guide
Moon & Sun – Ashes
To escape from the harsh winter we need some music that draws pictures of summer hazy beaches, endless days and warm nights. Enter the gorgeous Moon & Sun from Amsterdam. Their whimsical, sexy sound merges with a slightly more eerie tone of the vocal melodies and harmonies between frontlady Monica Tormell and her accompanying musicians. Playing a mix of piano, drums, guitars and steel drums, Moon & Sun have definitely got the 2010 sound down with their Caribbean sensibilities.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
Pumice – Greenock
New Zealand’s best one-man band multi-instrumentalist psych-noise outfit is Pumice, the pseudonym of Stefan Neville. One of Pumice’s best albums, 2007’s Pebbles, is about to get a vinyl release on Soft Abuse Records. Wheezing organ and guitar feedback combine in album centrepiece Greenock, named after the Scottish village Neville’s ancestors originated from.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Team Me – Weathervanes And Chemicals
Team Me play warm and rich orchestrated pop music in the same vein as Sufjan Stevens, Efterklang, Hjaltalin or Sigur Rós. This used to be Marius D. Hagen’s one-man band – a recording project where he could play the songs that didn’t fit in his other bands. But Team Me has grown into a seven-strong orchestra and the fragile acoustic songs Hagen used to play have been transformed into a much larger and richer sound. Hagen is also a member of alternative rock band Jaqueline and half of semi-electronic pop duo SiN along with Tord Øverland Knudsen of English band The Wombats. SiN will release their debut album later this year and hopefully we’ll also get a release from Team Me in 2010.

Rafo De La Cuba – Freak Profesional
Rafo De La Cuba has left anonymity to become an idol of Web 2.0. His home demos skip from ear to ear so it was no surprise that someone so talented could not stay hidden. Influenced by The Beatles, his songs tell simply of life – intimate stories turned into melancholic, but not sad, poetry. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to hear new material, with his debut LP due to be released soon.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Jasmin Jones – Lost In Rainbows
Jasmin Jones, whose mother is Portuguese, was born in Australia and lived in different countries during her childhood. She is a surfer and nature lover. Her debut album Beyond The Clouds will be released this year, even though she didn’t find a label to represent her. Jasmin currently lives in Lisbon and besides her solo career, she is the vocalist for Triplet, a rock band.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise

Kumm started 12 years ago as an art-rock band. Much like their influences, Sonic Youth and Spritualized, they have developed a new approach to rock by constantly experimenting with various sounds and styles. The moment the fuzz bass comes in during Chocolate & Strawberry, you’re caught in the band’s intricate web of white noise, ghostly reverb and cryptic vocals. Overall, the whole thing sounds like a long shutter exposure speeding past bright lights. Bliss.

Atkinson – Pais Tropical
Wincho Schäfer, Erik Aldrey and Rafael Cadavieco are musicians from famous Venezuelan bands Desorden Publico, Zapato 3 and Amigos Invisibles who decided to join talents in this interesting project called Atkinson. They launched their first production last March and since then they’ve been touring the country amazing new fans with smart lyrics and clean but catchy pop-rock. Pais Tropical is a musical explanation of the socio-political particularities of Venezuela.

Dalam suatu perbincangan, seorang teman pernah menyinggung tentang rilisan band ini yang menurut nya cukup bagus, dan beberapa waktu kemudian saya membelinya disebuah toko CD, dan setelah mendengarkannya saya jadi teringat dengan My Vitriol, terutama karena intens nya kekasaran distorsi.

Namun setelah beberapa kali didengarkan, saya berpendapat band ini mungkin bisa dibilang berada diantara Foo Fighter (rilisan awal)/Nirvana dengan My Bloody Valentine. Tetapi dengan masukan pengaruh-pengaruh dari band-band post-punk modern seperti Interpol, The Editors, maupun Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Revenge of the Nerds With Chiptunes

In high school, most students belonged to a group defined by a common interest and attitude. There were the jocks, the rich kids, the pretty girls, the musicians and the nerds. The jocks always dated the pretty girls, while the musicians were popular with everyone. The nerds, on the other hand, with their chess club and computer games, were outcasts.

But it seems that the tables have turned and now being a nerd is cool. Nerd culture has taken off all over the world, including here in Indonesia. The thick glasses that once earned nerds the nickname “four eyes” and lunchtime beatings have become fashionable. Reading manga, collecting quirky toys and playing computer games are now trendy.

And a nerdy form of music has also developed in this subculture, which is slowly making its way into the mainstream. Indonesia, make way for the Chiptune Revolution.

Chiptune, or 8-bit, artists make their music from video-game consoles, most of which were produced between the late 1970s and the ’90s, from the Commodore 64 and Atari 800 to the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Sega Megadrive and, of course, the Nintendo Game Boy.

“The music was originally created back then to support the games,” said local chiptune artist Abim. And for those who grew up during the home-console boom, chiptunes evoke a sense of nostalgia.

“The 8-bit sound happened by accident,” Abim said, “because of the limited capabilities those consoles at the time had. It turns out that those sounds are now cool.”

While groups such as Japan’s YMCK and Nullsleep of the United States are finding an international following, Indonesia is not doing to badly in the world of chiptunes. Along with Jaka Abiburda, a k a JW86, Abim created an event called Pesta Mikro (Micro Party) in 2007, which helped move the phenomenon into the mainstream. Many local acts came out of Pesta Mikro, including Cacat Nada, Pickney and Local Drug Store.

With the Internet, chiptune artists have been able to gain immediate international exposure. “MySpace introduced many Indonesian artists to YMCK, Covox and those other popular guys,” said Dimas Theodora from Local Drug Store.

While a few artists — both international and local — perform with their bulky consoles on the stage, others merely produce and perform chiptunes on notebook computers.

Still, the most popular shows tend to be the ones where the musicians use old joysticks and floor pads to jump around on to produce the sounds. Semarang’s Rico Julian, a k a Hellostereo!, is one such act. “I like the authenticity of performing that way,” he said.

But Rico finds that playing large consoles on the stage is too difficult, so he uses the smaller Game Boy.

Dimas said that using consoles is Local Drug Store’s preference because of the challenges it brings. Adding to the nostalgic element of its shows, Local Drug Store often includes retro visuals created by fellow chiptune group Stand by Emulator.

Indonesia’s chiptune scene is in its embryonic phase: At this point, most acts are mimicking the sounds of international groups.

Abim said: “You can tell when an artist is from Japan, America or elsewhere because the sound is more original.”

Rico concurs: “There is just not enough exploration with most new artists here. A lot of them just use the sound as a gimmick.”

Takeshi Yokemura from YMCK wants to see a greater appreciation of chiptunes. “People seem to be attracted to the 8-bit sound out of curiosity and nostalgia,” he said. “We have to get people interested in the fascinating sound itself.”

With more events like Pesta Mikro and collectives such as the Indonesian Chiptune Community springing up, chiptunes will inevitably hit the mainstream here, and like any trend, introduce both mediocre and brilliant artists.

“There’s going to be a time when the mix of local traditions and chiptunes is perfected,” Abim said.

And if that is the case, and these nerds make it big, they will truly have found their ultimate revenge.

TLTN Keeps It Hardcore
When Metallica played in Jakarta in 1993, a riot broke out between security and fans without tickets. It was clear that heavy metal had gained steam in Indonesia and that fans identified with the drama and rage metal bands exuded on stage.

The genre dwindled in the late 1990s, but heavy metal made a comeback in the early 2000s, with bands like As I Lay Dying from the United States and UK group Bullet For My Valentine. These groups retained the instrumental heaviness of the Metallica era, but ornamented it with more melodic vocal lines, making the music more accessible to a wider audience.

The result was a large mainstream audience made up of younger and more female fans.

Jakarta-based band TooLateToNotice, often called TLTN, is influenced by metalcore — heavy metal and hardcore punk — but does not follow it blindly.

Formed in 2003, the group is made up of Faisal Arachman Aladin on vocals, Andhika Pradana Hardie on bass, Pedro Alogo Pane on drums, Dion Panlima Reza on guitar and Rahdyan Adhie Pralanpito on second guitar.

From the start, the band avoided playing covers while they developed their own sound. Their early songs were usually structured with a screamed verse, a melodic chorus and a guitar-solo interlude in a minor key, more akin to late-’80s metal bands than the modern sound of metalcore groups.

The group avoided dressing like metalcore bands, which typically fused the dark style of metal with boyish haircuts and other preppy elements. TLTN preferred the rough look of older metal bands.

“We weren’t fashionable kids,” Dion said. “We preferred to focus on the music, rather than becoming a heavy-metal boy band.”

In 2005, TLTN recorded a number of demos, which they sent out to radio stations. Singles such as “Sempit” (“Narrow”) brought them recognition among the independent music crowd. “Sempit” managed to reach No. 1 on teen radio station Prambors, and the band soon found itself busy with gigs.

The group tried to record an album in 2006, but they faced some technical problems. Dion said they recorded and financed the album themselves, but after three months of work, the result “sounded horrible.”

The audio engineer turned out to be an amateur. Andhika said, “We scrapped the whole thing and decided to find a producer or sponsor instead.”

In late 2007, the group met with Abdillah Hasbie, a fan who was introduced to the band by the members of metal group Fall. He approached them about releasing a record and offered a budget of Rp 15 million ($1,455), which would take care of the recording and production.

They jumped at the chance and reworked their old material, some of which sounded “a little too close to trendy metalcore,” according to Edo.

Andhika said, “We wanted to focus more on the old-school sound of bands like Pantera.”

The result was “Beyond God’s Boundaries,” an album full of speedy riffs and hardcore instrumentation.

The album was lyrically poetic, focusing on topics such as heartbreak, shame and uncertainty. Faisal said he tried not to stick to one topic. “A lot of it is about friends, our surroundings and romance.”

“Beyond God’s Boundaries” has sold more than 2,000 copies this month so far and the band is already planning to record new songs. “We’re going to incorporate a few nonmetal references, such as Husker Du and Dead Can Dance,” Edo said.

Asked if they would ever consider going mainstream, Faisal said: “Maybe we’ll play pop songs in a few years — who knows? But right now, we’re just enjoying the freedom and idealism that comes with being young.” (Marcel Thee)

Breathing the Delta Blues

Legend has it that the Mississippi blues legend Robert Johnson, who died in 1936, sold his soul to the devil on Route 666 in exchange for the ability to create the greatest blues ever known to mankind. Listening to local blues guitarist Adrian Adioetomo’s mastery of the genre, you would be forgiven for wondering if perhaps the 35-year-old musician struck the same deal.

Adrian spent years of his youth in Australia, where his surroundings influenced his musical mind-set.

“Since my university outside Sydney was in a completely desolated and barren area, the blues automatically seemed like the appropriate soundtrack for the landscape,” he said.

“I started listening to rural blues records by people like Muddy Waters, which became a daily soundtrack for me, and I discovered in blues what I’d looked for but didn’t find in punk and metal.”

Adrian, however, was especially smitten by Chris Whitley, who died in 2005 from lung cancer. Whitley had played a manic amalgamation of blues from the poverty-laden Mississippi Delta area, as well as the noisier and more abstract sounds of experimental composers such as Glenn Branca and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

“I learned a lot from Whitley. I guess you could also say I stole a lot from his style of slide playing with the resonator guitar; but more than that, his playing taught me about the unlimited capability of the blues,” Adrian said.

At the beginning of this decade, Adrian played weekly gigs at a small cafe in Kemang, South Jakarta, and at BB’s in Menteng. “Whenever I played ’70s blues songs by artists like Hendrix, [Joni] Mitchell, Cream and The Doors on my slide guitar, the response was fantastic,” he said. So he decided to write songs in such a style and release them independently.

Asked why he based his style on the noisier Delta blues Adrian said: “The original records of the early exponents [of Delta blues] sound like weirdly funky avant-garde recordings.”

To maintain the ghostly distant feeling of many old blues recordings, Adrian deliberately added scratches and crackling to the recordings.

Like Whitley and the Delta blues pioneers, Adrian found freedom in being able to sing about his personal demons without sounding cliched or self-pitying. On his first album, “Delta Indonesia,” which was released on his own label, My Seeds Records, he delivers lyrics describing the bleakest of emotions, repeatedly referring to the devil.

“To me, it is pure expression,” he says. “Totally deep and cathartic. It resonates to some of the deepest feelings of just being alive.”

Although it had the privilege of being Indonesia’s first Delta blues record, sales of “Delta Indonesia” were lackluster. The album did, however, receive praise from music critics and the independent music community, which Adrian was becoming more aligned with.

He started collaborating live with rising independent bands such as Efek Rumah Kaca and Zeke and the Popo, and soon became a constant “guest star” at shows.

His peers in the indie scene seemed to have a better grasp of authentic blues as opposed to commercial blues, although Adrian says this is rare in Indonesia.

“It’s just something that not a lot of people want to embrace for some unknown reason,” he says.

In his music, Adrian says, “I want to tease the cliche of the blues.”

And what exactly is a blues cliche? “Being a powerful and intense music for me, I find it somewhat superficial when people consider it macho music for jeans TV commercials or something. Blues matters when you’re feeling something that you can’t escape.”

It takes a while to get used to hearing Indonesian lyrics on top of blues music, but it’s not long until the anguish of the lyrics comes through.

In “Let the Dogs Go,” Adrian sings: “Let the dogs go/let them chase me/howling at my every move,” seemingly of the country’s hierarchal system of power.

As Adrian became a fixture in the small but tight local blues scene, as well as the local indie scene, invitations to perform piled up. In July last year, he provided the soundtrack for a local independent movie called “The Ribbon,” which was made by young Indonesian director Pandu Birantoro for a film festival in Canada.

As for now, Adrian wants to forget the hype and concentrate on the follow-up to “Delta Blues.”

“I do feel a kind of guilt playing a genre of music that is allegedly un-Indonesian,” he says laughing, “So I’m going to try to incorporate some other influences from different cultures, but I know it won’t be easy.”

He is aiming to get his next album out early this year. But really, Adrian’s goal is simple: “I just want to change the perception that blues is old men’s music.”

KunoKini: Keeping Musical Traditions Alive

KunoKini is not your everyday drums-guitar-vocals band: The foursome play indigenous instruments from around the country, and some from abroad.

Their sound is a fusion of different traditional Indonesian styles with the more modern echoes of Bob Dylan and Bob Marley. The band members have built a strong reputation for themselves at home and internationally as an innovative, yet conservational band, hence the name KunoKini: kuno meaning “traditional” and kini meaning “now” in Indonesian slang.

The band wants to change people’s perceptions of what music is considered cool. “Indonesian youths have forgotten traditional music. They’re more comfortable with modern music,” says Akbar Nugraha, a band member.

KunoKini was formed in 2003, when Akbar and his friends Firzy, Adhi “Bhismo” Bhisma and Beby of Paramadina University were invited to perform at the Folklore Festival in Wismar, Germany, to back a traditional dance troupe. It was their first performance abroad and the musicians were overwhelmed by the standing ovation they received.

The band headed overseas last year and performed in the Friends of Indonesia event in Sydney, where they were again well received.

Firzy slyly admits that the rock-star reception boosts their confidence. “Those kinds of shows really lift us off our feet,” he says. “We’re definitely more together as a band now.”

KunoKini has always used traditional instruments, such as the klontang, a tonal instrument from the Dayak Ngaju tribe of Kalimantan; the kerang, a seashell used by tribes in Jayapura, Papua; and the gemuruh, a rumble drum. They also play non-Indonesian instruments, such as the djembe, a traditional West African drum; the tong drum from China; and the well-known Australian Aboriginal didgeridoo.

The band always offers an unconventional performance, in which the musicians constantly swap instruments.

Their performances have been critically lauded by local newspapers, a number of which have compared them to the late Harry Roesly, the legendary Indonesian musician who used traditional instruments.

With all the praise they are getting, it seems an appropriate time for them to release an album. “We plan to release it by the middle of this year,” Akbar says.

The band’s manager, Maria Darmaningsih, says the band has collaborated with more modern local artists — such as the rap group Ras Muhammad and the Australian rapper Nova — and plans on doing the same on their album.

Dimulai dari proyek Sindri Már Sigfússon’s (aka Sin Fang Bous) dimana kemudian berkembang menjadi sebuah band berisi 7 orang yang memainkan musik eksperimental/folk/indie.

Dan pada Maret 2010 nanti mereka akan merilis sebuah album berjudul “We Built a Fire” untuk menyusul kesuksesan “The Ghost That Carried Us Away” yang terjual kurang lebih 20.000 kopi waktu dirilis 2007 kemarin. Coba dengarkan single nya terlebih dahulu, berikan pendapat kamu.

Sekitar dua tahun yang lalu saya mendapatkan e.p. mereka dan menemukan adanya kualitas yang berbeda dengan band-band sejenis, terutama karena mereka memiliki attitude dan filosofis yang bisa dibilang membentuk karakter mereka sekarang dalam bermusik.

Secara pengaruh musik, mereka banyak terpengaruh oleh musik-musik dari dataran Britania Raya, terdengar dari cengkok vokal, dan efek-efek delay di dalam setiap lagunya.

Dan mereka berencana merilis sebuah album diawal 2010 ini, dengan kualitas yang menurut saya dapat dipertanggung jawabkan.

Indonesian Horror Bands Make Mad Music
The guys in horror melodic punk group Kelelawar Malam (Night Bat) were playing their most energetic tune, “Pocong Berjalan” (“Walking Ghoul”) at Rossi Musik in South Jakarta in August, when without warning the sound system died, bringing the performance to a screeching halt. A pocong is one of Indonesia’s most famous ghouls — a corpse covered in a white burial shroud.

“It has happened to us many, many times. And during that particular song,” said Saiba, the band’s vocalist and guitarist.

Saiba, who goes by the stage name Saiba Mencekam (Terrifying Saiba), said, “A lot of odd things occur whenever we perform that song. Believe it or not, some of our fans have reported seeing a real pocong in the audience, singing along.”

Saiba chuckled. He was clearly enjoying the ghostly recollections.

Kelelawar Malam is made up of Saiba, Apin “Doomsday” on drums, “Violent” Deta on bass and Fahri “Scary Death” on guitar. It is one of a number of bands playing a new genre some fans have dubbed “horror core.” While well-known American bands such as The Misfits have long combined rock with tongue-in-cheek B-grade horror imagery, Indonesia is only beginning to get a taste for it, and has a rich mythology to draw on.

“Nothing beats our local ghosts” said Dede, the singer and creative force behind Serigala Jahanam (Bastard Wolf), a one-man band that combines heavy metal and old-school hard-core with themes of grotesque horror. Live, Dede is joined by additional musicians.

“They are surely much more terrifying than ghosts in Western films,” he said. “That is why we are trying to inject more imagery of local ghouls into our new songs.”

“If in America they have Vampira, here we have Suzzana [an iconic Indonesian actress known for her many ghoulish roles in the late ’80s and early ’90s],” Saiba said. “If in Europe they have Dracula, here we have the Kuntilanak [a long-haired female ghost].”

While they do share a common theme of blood and gore, Serigala Jahanam and Kelelawar Malam are very different musically.

“Black Sabbath are gods of music and The Melvins are our role models,” Dede said, listing his musical influences, which account for the band’s pounding beats and adrenaline-driven guitar riffs.

Saiba said the original concept for Kelelawar Malam was as a cover band that would perform songs by any group American singer Glenn Danzig had been a member of, including Samhain, The Misfits and Danzig. The band’s sing-along style certainly owes a large debt to Danzig’s twisted version of punk.

Lyrically, both bands are more akin to each other, faithfully sticking to the darker side of things.

“We want to evoke themes that terrify people, which are not necessarily limited to mystical subjects. But also things like the end of the world, death, life after death, mutants, aliens, prophecies about the end of the world and, of course, human nature, which is often the most frightening,” Saiba said.

Dede said his lyrics are “bleak, dark, depressing, chaotic, with a sprinkle of menacing humor.”

To write such lyrics one must first get into an appropriately grim mood. Saiba said the members of Serigala Jahanam, who write the lyrics together, are at their most inspired when they isolate themselves in a dark room and start imagining slasher-flick scenarios. The band also often dims the lights in Saiba’s house and engages in morbid role-playing games, with one band member playing the role of an assailant, and the others the victims.

Both groups’ live performances use elements of theater to maximize the drama. They often use fake blood or white face paint to create corpse-like appearances.

But neither band relies solely on shtick to impress fans. While Serigala Jahanam’s relentless loud riffs and growling vocals might not be for everyone, its live energy is undeniable.

Kelelawar Malam is a crowd favorite, with Saiba consistently able to drive audiences into a sing-along frenzy.

Both bands have released mini-albums. Serigala Jahanam’s “Ketika Pria Memakan Wanita, Ketika Wanita Memakan Pria” (“When Men Eat Women, When Women Eat Men”) was released in 2008. The CD version was sold at shows, while a digital version was given away free through a prominent Yogyakarta-based Net-label, Yesnowave.

Kelelawar Malam’s “Suzzanakenstein” was released in February. A digital version was also released through Yesnowave.

“We originally intended a digital-only release, but people started asking for a physical product so we pressed a limited edition of 100, which we sold with an equally limited-print T-shirt. They sold out pretty quickly,” Saiba said.

Both groups plan to continue to use horror imagery in their shows and in their lyrics, and both said they would stick to the campy local horrors of the past as a main source of inspiration, rather than the newer generation of scary movies.

“Today’s horror movies rely solely on loud sound effects and supposedly stylish camera work. It ends up looking like an expensively budgeted music video with zero taste,” Saiba said. “All the shocks come from the loudness of the sound. If we turn the sound down, it pales in comparison to Suzzana’s quietly grim appearance and her large hair. What scary icons do we have that can compete with that today?”

Jakarta’s Duck Dive Takes to Noise Like a Duck to Water

Crouched over a board filled with guitar effects, drum machines, analog synthesizers and various other odd-looking noisemaking gizmos, Muhammad Fahri, the sole member of Duck Dive, seems to be in a meditative state. His eyes are fully fixed on twisting and turning the knobs in front of him.

Amid the equipment is a controller that he uses to trigger sounds, ranging from watery ambient noise to what appears to be electronic static on top of a repeated rhythmic drum pattern. Clearly, this isn’t music that will get you up dancing; you can’t even bob your head to it. Not unless you’re in a seriously altered state.

A projector flashes surreal visuals onto the walls behind Muhammad, while some are projected directly onto him. The eclectic images are a fitting accompaniment to the otherworldly sound of Duck Dive.

So how did Muhammad, a Trisakti University student who used to live in Hiroshima, Japan, learn to make such unorthodox music?

“I grew up with Radiohead, and got into other artists that inspired them,” he says, adding that he also has a taste for old-school music. “I was in love with ‘hippie music’ when I found the Grateful Dead, which I discovered through Neil Young. My influences have been snowballing ever since.”

The Grateful Dead and Radiohead gave way to avant-garde artists such as minimalist composer Terry Riley, and synth-based groups like Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel, both of which were part of the German “Kraut Rock” boom. These artists would prove to be the biggest influence on Duck Dive’s current sound.

“Riley was — and still is — a big, hippy, cult character with breakthrough compositions. It is amazingly ahead of its time, even now,” Muhammad says.

“When I found out about the early electronic music scene, I was kind of dragged into it by the spell of the analog synths, so to speak.”

Today, Duck Dive is a part of a new experimental/noise music trend that is slowly winning over the indie crowd in many big cities. And while many artists are wary of being pegged as a certain genre, the noise tag does not bother Duck Dive.

“The connection to the noise scene? Well, I’ve always believed that music is universal and by that I mean there are no certain formulas or recipes in making music,” Muhammad says. “Everything can be music. Silence can also be music.”

“These days, the noise scene is the most suitable vehicle for my music, because in noise music there are no rules. You create a sound no matter what source you use,” he adds. “That feeling of universal creativity really turned me on to this scene.”

Muhammad seems proudest, however, when he explains the influence world music has on him.

“Living in Hiroshima certainly affected my way of living and, by extension, my music. I love the traditional songs they perform at festivals,” he says.

In Japan, Muhammad discovered the beauty of traditional instruments, something he also brings to Duck Dive. “When I first started, I used many different traditional instruments like small percussion, flutes, thumb bells. I really love the organic tones that they create,” he says.

Often at Duck Dive shows, Muhammad uses a guitar loop pedal to manipulate the sounds from these instruments. The sounds loop against each other until they become a cacophony of noise that resembles the sound of a building being torn down.

Muhammad also prefers retro analog sound boxes to modern synths. “When I fell in love with analog synthesizers, I began to study them intensely, and became really amazed by the sounds they were able to create — I was like a boy who fell in love with a new toy,” he says.

He uses vintage equipment, including two of the most revered: a “space echo” effect box and Moog analog ring modulator. He also has enough other vintage synths in his collection to make a collector drool.

Muhammad’s thirst for more sounds is unwavering, and he plans to purchase more equipment in the future.

“I feel like I need to change some of my gear to be able to achieve a wider array of sounds,” he says.

Catalina Vin – Caleidoscope
Catalina Vin is an Argentine-American singer and songwriter who started learning music at the age of seven. Genuine is her first album, in which her roots are reflected through eight indie-pop songs sung in both English and Spanish, with soft string and piano arrangements. Caleidoscope is one of our favourite tracks.

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Seekae – Void
Ever since FBi Radio started broadcasting regularly some five years ago, Sydney’s independent music scene has flourished from the much-needed lifeblood and community support that the station provides. A lot of young musicians now have an alternative to Triple J to supplement their listening habits and this has encouraged the more experimental writers to pursue their own distinct sounds, knowing they will be played and heard. Seekae is the clear breakout band out of Sydney’s resurging experimental electronic music. With their abstract vocals and dreamy atmosphere they have earned their place as leaders of the city’s 2010 sound.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Curumin – Vem Menina
Curumin is one of the biggest names of the contemporary independent music scene in Brazil. A drummer and singer, besides his solo work, he plays with artists such as Otto, Céu and Guizado. Vem Menina is a samba from his debut album, Achados e Perdidos, released in 2003. His latest album, Japan Pop Show, was released last year and shows his talent to compose funk, samba, rock and electronic songs.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
Leif Vollebekk – Quebec
Some people hear Patrick Watson in Leif Vollebekk’s vocals. Others have compared his music to that of Owen Pallett/Final Fantasy. I’m not sure about the comparisons, but I know this: Vollebekk is an incredibly gifted performer and artist, and when his debut album, Inland, gets re-released in a few weeks on hot new Toronto label Nevado Records, all of Canada is going to find out just how talented he is.

CHILE: Super 45
De Janeiros – Montreal
Milton Mahan and Pablo Munoz are De Janeiros, one of the most interesting projects in the Chilean experimental scene. In the trend of bands such as Health or Fuck Buttons – that kind of plastic and colorful noise – their sound goes beyond by adding a more playful and “tropical” feeling to it. Chilean net-label Michita Rex have made their sophomore album Plateado available to downloaded for free here.

CHINA: Wooozy
PK14 – Cuo Guo Le
PK14 is the best post-punk band in China. Formed in 1997, they have released five albums. Currently, they are preparing a new album to be release this year and they will attend SXSW in March.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
Cours Lapin – Cache Cache
Cours Lapin is what happens when four movie score composers (Louise Alenius, Asger Baden, Peder and Jonas Struck) get together to do pop. Their name is French (translated as “bunny run”), their lyrics are in French (of course) and the French chanson is at the root of their mellow, melancholic pop that makes me think of black and white movies (and yes, they’re French).

ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
Thomas Western – Your Front Door
Last month I picked an Italian musician based in England for MAP – this time it’s the turn of an Englishman currently living in Scotland. Thomas Western’s bluesy/folky approach to songwriting is reminiscent of Elliott Smith or Bob Dylan, while his exquisite vocal range is pitched halfway between Tim and Jeff Buckley. Western moved from Derbyshire to Edinburgh last year to complete his university studies and Your Front Door is his masterpiece.

ESTONIA: Popop
UNCANDY – Lovecool
UNCANDY (and yes, it’s important to write it in capital letters) is multi-talented Maria Juur from Tallinn. Her home recordings have already created quite a buzz in the Estonian indie scene and rumour has it we won’t have to wait long for a debut album. She also records under the name Maria Minerva. Lovecool is featured on new Estonian indie compilation album, Kohalik Ja Kohatu 3.

FINLAND: Glue
Vishnudata – Silver Falls feat. Suho Superstar (radio edit)
Established in 2003, Vishnudata is a project by electronic dance music guru Ville Lankinen which explores the artist’s techno and house influences. Silver Falls is the closing track of his self-titled sophomore album and progressively it introduces the listener into a shiny ethereal atmosphere and psychedelic soundscape. This radio edit version, which features Suho Superstar on vocals, is included in a recently released EP along with three more remixes.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Ibrahim Maalouf – Souma Hia
Born in Lebanon, Ibrahim Maalouf grew up in Paris and began studying the trumped at the age of seven. Ten years later he met Maurice André, who advised him to give up his mathematics studies to dedicate himself to music. Maalouf also had the opportunity to record a song with French singer Matthieu Chedid and this collaboration can be found in the very good Diachronism album. The track Souma Hia carries a great deal of energy.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Get Well Soon – 5 Steps / 7 Swords
Get Well Soon is the solo project of Konstantin Gropper, a classically trained singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Berlin. His soulful and sophisticated songs take the same path as the likes of Sufjan Stevens or Zach Condon. 5 Steps / 7 Swords is the first single release from second album Vexations.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
Exposed By Observers – In My Skin
Exposed By Observers aim to rape the listeners’ ears, yet are less faithfully wed to punk and more interested in dance-derived rhythms, deploying more tightly coiled riffs and distinctive beats than most screamo bands. Secondhand Youth EP, which was given away for free on their website, sounds like everything they’d ever heard, spewed out and rewired for a different type of moshpit etiquette, a brand new teenage riot. They frantically blend cheap samples, beatbox rhythms, clicks, bleeps, fringes, beeps and guitars with manic electro buzz and raw, squawking vocals. Unsurprisingly, there’s also a noticeable undercurrent of emo here too, but actually feels charged and compelling in the momentary tantrums of In My Skin. Listen loud!

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Bloodgroup – My Arms
Bloodgroup was formed in 2006 by Halez, Lilja, Raggi and Janus during some boring winter days on the east coast of Iceland and they make catchy electronic dance-pop. Debut album Sticky Situation was released on the band’s own label, Sild Ehf, and got excellent reviews. Its follow-up, Dry Land, was released on the Record Records label last month. My Arms is their latest single.

INDIA: Indiecision
Seven Degrees – Shadows In The Dark
Seven Degrees is a boy-girl punk duo from New Delhi. This irreverent twosome produce angular, infectious punk that’s largely bare-boned yet crashy enough to cause a decent racket. Shadows In The Dark is part of a free compilation album called Stupid Stupid Stupid available on Indiecision. The song is a spiralling, old-school punk tribute that leaves you with the distinct feeling of wanting to get up and not be lazy anymore.

IRELAND: Nialler9
I Am The Cosmos – Remembering You
Remembering You is a beautiful slice of broody 80s-inspired electronica buttressed on creaking synth stabs and high-pitched melodies. Port-Royal – The Photoshopped Prince
There was a blizzard here last week and I found myself listening again to this third album by Port-Royal. It was the perfect soundtrack. Shoegaze, IDM, electro and ambient influences blend together to build an epic soundscape. The Genoa-based quartet used to be on the renowned Resonant label and have worked with Ulrich Schnauss and made remixes for Ladytron and Felix Da Housecat. Now they’re back with a throbbing, intense, unpredictable, brimful of life new record.

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
Green Blossoms – Hana Akari
Green Blossoms are folky duo Aiko Koga and Anthony Guerra. Aiko sings and plays ukulele, Anthony plays the other instruments. They released their second album, Whiskey Leaves, on US-based Digitalis Recordings last summer. Hana Akari is beautiful, softly-intoned songwriting and its ghostly incantations will stick in the back of your mind.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa
The Hong Kong Blood Opera – Cansei De Ser Gangsta
The Mexican alternative scene recently witnessed the rise of a synthetic yet raw punk generation raiding the underground. A frenetic quintet from desertic Hermosillo stood out – The Hong Kong Blood Opera. A bloody opera? More like straight hardcore screaming evil and rough beats. The HKBO got sweaty teenagers shaking their guts and also blew the critics away when they won a nationwide competition sponsored by a monopolic corporation a few years ago. Instead of vanishing like every band from those schemes usually does, they reappeared with a remarkable album titled Not For The Faint Of Heart. The record breaks the rock-band-contest cliché and at the same time mocks the whole mediatic circus and abusive music industry models with killer singles like Cansei De Ser Gangsta.

NETHERLANDS: Amsterdam Event Guide
The Wooden Constructions – No No (Hip Hop)
Happy New Year from the Netherlands crew. We’ll kickstart 2010 with one of the most talked-about Amsterdam acts, The Wooden Constructions. Their tribal disco with punk-infused lyrics (which harness the confidence of Mark E. Smith) sit alongside their own blend of twangy guitars and driving rhythms. Their unique musical stylings and great live shows have got the city rather excited about what 2010 might offer for this band and the Amsterdam scene itself. Watch this space.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
The Mint Chicks – Crush
For three decades, Chris Knox has made some of New Zealand’s most exciting music – from the punk of The Enemy, Toy Love, virtually inventing the country’s indie music scene with four-track recordings of his band Tall Dwarfs and writing one of the nation’s most popular songs. Knox suffered a debilitating stroke last year and to aid his recovery many who have been influenced by him have contributed to an album of covers called Stroke. The roll call includes Jay Reatard, Stephen Merrit, Will Oldham, Lou Barlow and more. Crush, from The Tall Dwarfs’ 1984 EP Slug Bucket Hairy Breath Monster, is performed by The Mint Chicks, one of New Zealand’s most exciting bands.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Sacred Harp – Next Time Too
Sacred Harp are a trio from Oslo who recently released their beautiful self-titled debut EP on the small Norwegian label The Perfect Hoax. Their music is quite difficult to describe because it’s so in the middle of everything. It’s dark, but there’s also a lot of light and colour in there. It’s experimental, but it’s also full of pop structures and lovely melodies. It’s sacral and calm, other times almost brutal. It’s music you just have to listen to. The members are from Norway, Finland and Holland, so they really fit the spirit of the Music Alliance Pact.

PERU: SoTB
La Mente – La Problema
In its wonderful fusion of tropical rhythms, reggae and psychedelic electronic models, La Mente has uncovered an inexhaustible source of energy and dynamism which beckons you onto the dancefloor. La Problema is a feast of total madness and one of the strongest songs from La Mente’s new album, Para Los Muertos Y Los Vivientes.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Malcontent – Aggressive
Malcontent are a quartet from Oporto led by Sérgio Costa. When you listen to them you know their influences (The Jesus And Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Nine Inch Nails) and they don’t deny them. They started playing in 2007 and released several promo singles. Finally, they have their first full LP out, called Love The Gun, which the band self-released.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
Aievea – Joy Of Life
Vlaicu Golcea and Electric Brother are two incredibly talented multi-instrument players. They combine conventional music with electronic beats and the creative rhythms of Tavi Scurtu, the drummer who juggles with sound. To an already great recipe, we add Marta Hristea’s incredible voice for the perfect nu-jazz experience. After a six-year pause, they’ve just released their second album, Cinema, which can be fully downloaded here.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
Galleries – Underground Overground
Galleries have only been in existence for a matter of months, yet the quality of the songs on their MySpace page can’t help but mark them out as a band whose reach is sure to extend much wider than the blogosphere. The Glasgow group is made up of three students and, interestingly, BBC political reporter Andrew Black on drums. The lush sounds of Underground Overground beautifully hints at their The National and Jimmy Eat World influences and is taken from Galleries’ forthcoming debut EP. It’s a MAP exclusive download so feel privileged that you’re getting to own it first.

SINGAPORE: I’m Waking Up To…
Sherene’s Closet – Stereo Loud
Have we got a classic for you this month! Though now defunct, Sherene’s Closet is still very much celebrated in the Singaporean music scene. You might say it all started with this demo recorded during the now legendary Green Room Sessions, and I hear it’s a bit rarer than the LP version. This should be considered one of the best local songs ever recorded, owing to Gerald Stahlman’s stellar vocal delivery and the raw energy of the rest of the band.

SOUTH AFRICA: Musical Mover & Shaker!
Ashtray Electric – Lia
“A quaint mixture consisting of three parts suburb and two parts platteland” make up the phenomenon that is Ashtray Electric. They combine delicate beats, heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies that lead to a rather fresh, unconventional sound, albeit one that gets your feet tapping. Lia has been compared to Editors and Interpol but Ashtray Electric bring a fresh new sound that has them at the forefront of the indie scene, and rightly so.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
Apollo 18 – Warm
Last year Apollo 18 established themselves as one of the very best rock acts of Korea. Starting with a marvellous post-rock-oriented EP, an amazing album followed in which they experimented with hardcore, shoegaze and psychedelic elements. An international version of the first EP has just been released and before the end of the month it’ll be followed by instrumental rock pieces of a more playful kind. Re-recorded to magically sound even better than before, Warm is a stunningly beautiful post-rock piece of epic proportions best played as loud as possible.

SPAIN: Oscuro Magazine
2 Minuts d’Odi – Cuidad De Dios
2 Minuts d’Odi (“2 Minutes Of Hate”) are part of the “Brave Coast Punk-Rockers” movement which extends throughout the Costa Brava. Cuidad De Dios (“City Of God”) is a song against religion which speaks of the Palestinian problem and the bad influences that hatred and violence can have on a kid growing thirst for revenge.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
Jenny Björkqvist – To Heal Your Wounds
To Heal Your Wounds by Jenny Björkqvist is a song that successfully straddles the worlds of indie and folk – it would be as comfortable hanging out with Nick Drake or Jose Gonzalez as it would be spending time with Dylan or Guthrie. Friend and fellow neo-folkie Tim Schmidt contributes vocals on this track.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I’m Floating
Vikesh Kapoor – Mack The Knife
Vikesh Kapoor is an up-and-coming acoustic artist, currently based near Boston, who writes ballads which draw their strength from storytelling-type lyricism. After making appearances in Billboard and The Boston Globe, Kapoor is releasing his Newspress Scare 7″ featuring this great rendition of the Kurt Weill-composed Mack The Knife.

VENEZUELA: Barquisimento
El Pacto –

Hyperdance En La Curva De San Pablo
El Pacto are music legends in the city of Barquisimeto. Since 1992, they have been devoted to merging rock, pop, jazz, ska and folk music in a sound so original and vanguardist, they have even influenced famous national bands like Amigos Invisibles. Their shows ususally include circus-like performances with actors and acrobats. Hyperdance En La Curva De San Pablo is taken from the album of the same name.

Minus adalah band rock asal Islandia dengan musik rock yang bisa dibilang agresif, melodis sekaligus berat. Dengan influence dari Kyuss, Motorhead dan Black Flag dengan sentuhan glam rock yang cukup kental, membuat mereka menjadi salah satu band yang diperhitungkan di negara asalnya.

Dan menurut salah satu sumber yang cukup terpercaya, mereka mungkin akan datang ke Indonesia. :)

Secara musik, saya sendiri walau tidak banyak mengenal musisi di genre ini, tapi sepanjang saya sering mendapat lagu-lagu dari musisi Dub, Dancehall dan Reggae jarang sekali menemukan sesuatu yang benar-benar buruk, (kecuali beberapa band ska, yang cuma bereferensi Type-X atau Jun Fun Gung Foo).

Dan saya terus terang lebih menikmati rilisan ini, dibandingkan rilisan Ras sebelumnya, walau masih ketawa-ketawa geli melihat pose-pose nya, disini lebih mudah didengarkan dibandingkan album sebelumya, dan lebih terasa digarap menjadi album, sehingga tidak terasa sudah beberapa putaran saya memutar CD ini.

Dan saya menghargai usaha nya memperkenalkan bentuk lain musik reggae yang ga harus hanya berkisah tentang ganja, ganja dan ganja,tapi juga perjuangan kaum marjinal, dan menjadi suara dari yang tidak mampu bersuara sambil nongkrong di mal. Semoga saja tidak mudah menyerah dan bisa menjadi suara yang lebih nyata terdengar dan terasa.

sebelumnya saya minta maaf kalo (500) days of summer ga masuk. ha. kalo top 50 mungkin film itu masuk di nomer 21. without further ado, inilah 20 film terbaik pilihan saya yang dirilis di tahun 2009. well, walaupun tahun 2009 bukan the golden age of cinema, tapi saya melihat banyaknya musikal yang kembali di produksi (nine, rob marshall) & adaptasi novel anak-anak (where the wild things are & fantastic mr. fox), which is a good thing. oh ya, i like writing with all low-caps. ha.

ME AND ORSON WELLES – RICHARD LINKLATER

linklater banyak berjasa dengan mempersembahkan kita pada coming-of-age story di era seventies (dazed & confused) dan memperkenalkan kita pada band seperti foghat. setelah mengadaptasi novel dystopia phillip k. dick (a scanner darkly), kini dia tertarik untuk mengambil background pembuatan play “julius caesar”. sutradara multi-genre ini bahkan bisa membuat zac efron tampak keren disini.

COCO BEFORE CHANEL – ANNE FOUNTAINE

audrey tautou best performance. sebuah biopic yang menjadi tribute untuk desainer pakaian legendaris, coco chanel, dimana tanpa dia, mungkin sekarang tak akan ada perempuan yang memakai jeans ketat. walaupun cerita agak dragging, tapi kualitas acting dan chemistry allesandro nivola dan tautou disini bisa membuat kita betah.

ANTICHRIST – LARS VON TRIER

sebuah proyek yang agak pretensius memang, tetapi dengan konsep seperti ini, tidak aneh jika von trier mendapat “boo..” dari para penonton di cannes. sebuah narasi simpel, dimana karakter willem dafoe dan charlotte gainsbourg yang sedang berkabung atas kematian anaknya pergi untuk menyepi. no subplots, no side characters, no strange twists, just one direct story.

LIMITS OF CONTROL – JIM JARMUSCH

well this one, is pretty pretentious too. hehe. jarmusch kembali dengan tipikal conversation-film luntang-lantung yang memiliki plot lambat. di coffee & cigarettes dan night on earth tampaknya tehnik ini berhasil. tapi entah kenapa, disini jarmusch terlihat terlalu pretensius. dengan dialog yang absurd mengenai medan magnet sampai filosofi sebuah gitar, apakah ini tema eksitensialisme? mungkin. dengan setting dan sinematografi yang artsy, soundtrack dari band-band doom metal southern lord records seperti boris, earth dan sunn o))), this is his weirdest film ever. tetap saja worth watching, this is the type of film that you’re gonna love or loathe. jim is really testing the audience limits of patience.

FANTASTIC MR. FOX – WES ANDERSON

diadaptasi oleh noah baumbach dan wes Anderson dari novel roald dahl (charlie & the chocolate factory), stop-motion animation seperti ini akan sangat ditunggu oleh para penggemar henry selick (nightmare before christmas & coralline). dengan pengisi suara seperti george clooney, meryl streep & bill murray, wes got all of the key elements for a successful film. can wes Anderson deadpan dialogue mixes with dahl’s whimsical story? yes, it can.

DRAG ME TO HELL – SAM RAIMI

sutradara cult, sam raimi, adalah visioner yang sudah mempersembahkan cult-classics low-budget seperti trilogi film horror “evil dead” dan trilogi bujet-besar penghasil blockbuster “spiderman” kepada penonton. Kini, kembali dengan genre favoritnya: “gory-horror” yang menyerupai giallo-giallo italia, sam kembali menunjukan seperti apa seharusnya film horror itu dibuat.

sebuah tour-de-force mengenai peliknya kehidupan seorang perempuan panggilan “kelas atas”. Konon, terinfluens oleh red desert milik michaelangelo antonioni dan cries & whispers-nya ingmar bergman. bintang porno sasha grey yang biasa kamu lihat sedang melakukan fellatio atau anal sex, bisa berakting dengan dinamis disini. another thumbs up for soderbergh!

THE INFORMANT! – STEVEN SODERBERGH

can this guy actually make one movie that sucks? no, he can’t. setelah konspirasi oil-pipeline di “syriana”, biopic che guevara “che”, drug-trafficking di “traffic”, mencetak uang di “ocean’s eleven”  dan memenangkan oscar di “erin brockovich”, kini saatnya bagi soderbergh untuk membuat satir yang politikal.anehnya, saya tidak melihat george clooney disini. hahaha.

PONYO – HAYAO MIYAZAKI
adaptasi bebas dari little mermaid, animasi karya miyazaki dari studio ghibli ini secara visual adalah suguhan terbaik dari kartunis legendaris ini. tema mengenai environment dan keluarga ini digarapnya dengan serius. i prefer miyazaki’s other works though, like “spirited away” or “princess mononoke”. tapi untuk mengisi tahun 2009, ini juga termasuk film yang sangat-sangat bagus. i urge you to see this one.

BROKEN EMBRACES – PEDRO ALMADOVAR

lush visuals yang biasa digambarkan almadovar dengan imej-imej yang colourful tampak tidak terlalu menonjol disini, walau tema tentang “women-struggle” tetap terasa. thriller ini bahkan bisa dimasukkan ke genre film-noir dengan kehadiran cruz sebagai femme fatale, permainan bayangan ala german expressionism sampai crime story yang kompleks. salah satu kategori palme d’or di cannes.

THE HURT LOCKER – KATHRYN BIGELOW

film mengenai perang irak yang paling intens, dilihat dari perspektif seorang tentara penjinak bom yang tugasnya setiap hari adalah menjinakan bom ditengah baku tembak medan perang. nuff said. i urge you to see this one.

THE HANGOVER

jika film memento-nya christopher nolan bertemu dengan komedi-slapstick, film inilah yang akan kamu dapatkan. sebuah screw-ball comedy ala karya mel brooks dengan dialog-dialog witty ala komedi-komedi judd apatow. film terlucu untuk 2009.

AVATAR – JAMES CAMERON

mahluk-mahluk biru yang menarik, setelah smurf.  avatar adalah proyek ambisius cameron dengan bujet yang super-mega-mewah. bujet film ini bahkan bisa mengakhiri kelaparan di darfur. ada tema besar tentang environment dan metafor-metafor invasi AS ke irak disini. anyway, sebuah eye-candy yang fantastis, dan saya beri ekstra jempol untuk absennya celine dion pada ending credits.

NINE – ROB MARSHALL

sophia loren dan daniel day-lewis di film yang sama? I’m not a big fan of musicals, especially rob marshall works. Tapi entah kenapa, nine bahkan bisa membuat para pembenci genre musikal untuk tetap duduk dan menonton sampai akhir. ceritanya agak mengingatkan saya pada 8½. karya fellini. Tentu saja minus adegan surrealnya.

THE INTERNATIONAL – TOM TYKWER

dengan tema besar konspirasi global pada sector perbankan, dan alegori terhadap worldbank dan IMF, thriller yang smart ini juga didukung oleh skrip yang cerdas, acting yang berkualitas, sinematografi yang fantastis dan narasi yang mudah diikuti. Keinginan clive owen untuk bermain di film spy setelah ditolak menjadi james bond pun terbayar disini.

WATCHMEN – ZACK SNYDER

di graphic-novelnya, alan moore membahas eksistensialisme ala nietzsche, konsep “just-war”, kajian strategis tentang nuclear-detterence dan peran media dalam politik global. Snyder berhasil men-translate imajinasi visual dave gibbons dan alan moore kedalam seluloid, tanpa menjadikan film ini menjadi genre superhero yang biasa (walaupun alan moore tetap enggan menontonnya). film superhero terbaik setelah dark knight.

A SERIOUS MAN – COEN BROTHERS

coen bros kembali ke gaya penyutradaan ala karya mereka sebelumnya, barton fink. unsur dark comedy dan drama yang penuh simbolisme dan metafor cerdas ini diperlihatkan di seluruh film dengan subtil. tema-tema seperti faith, family, mortality and misfortune menjadi hidangan utama disini. sangat direkomendasikan.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE – SPIKE JONZE

novel maurice sendak ini memang bukan cerita fairytale anak-anak yang happy ending. begitu juga dengan adaptasi visual di filmnya, spike jonze mencoba memperlihatkan ekspresi emosi dan kualitas voice-acting yang top notch. film yang sangat emosional. ini adalah cerita mengenai childhood, tapi bukan berarti children story juga. Mungkin beberapa anak kecil akan bertanya pada ortunya saat keluar dari bioskop “ma, kenapa mahluk-mahluk itu selalu terlihat sedih ya?”.

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS – QUENTIN TARANTINO

sebuah film spaghetti-western, lengkap dengan score dari ennio morricone yang disamarkan menjadi “film perang”. dialog-dialog ngalor-ngidul tarantino dan excessive violence yang menjadi trademarknya benar-benar dimainkan dengan maksimal disini. sebuah jew-movie anti nazi yang secara historis tidak akurat, tetapi berhasil memuaskan hati para film snob dan penonton mainstream di seluruh dunia. Btw, ini juga sebuah tribute untuk film macaroni-combat tahun 1978, berjudul the inglourious Bastards.

UP IN THE AIR – JASON REITMAN

adaptasi dari novel walter kim yang tidak begitu populer. ini adalah keberhasilan ketiga jason reitman (anak dari ivan reitman, sutradara ghostbusters) setelah thank you for smoking dan juno. bercerita mengenai seorang corporate-downsizer, yang pekerjaannya mengharuskan dia untuk travelling dan mem-PHK ribuan orang. i love the airports and hotel rooms setting, clooney’s incredible performance, and the beautiful miss vera farmiga.  this movie has anything that hollywood’s forgot to do, this is mainstream movie making at it’s best.

Judul lagu ini adalah “Mafia Medis” yang isinya ungkapan ketidakpuasan terhadap oknum penyedia pelayanan medis yang sembrono menangani pasien. Kami sadar bahwa tidak semua pihak medis demikian, karena memang seharusnya pihak penyedia pelayanan kesehatan menjunjung tinggi rasa kemanusiaan. Kami yakin oknum medis yang bersih tidak akan tersinggung dengan lagu ini, karena lagu ini hanya ditujukan bagi oknum yang nakal.

Lagu ini dibuat karena kekesalan kita, dari perspektif konsumen, terhadap sejumlah kasus-kasus mal-praktik, mis-diagnosa, pemerasan ‘halus’ kepada konsumen dalam bentuk biaya yang gila, pemberian obat yang tidak cocok, treatment yang ngawur, monkey business/komisi produk yang dijual, dan aktivitas-aktivitas lainnya yang jauh menyimpang dari ‘sumpah hippokrates’, baik yang pernah kami alami ataupun dengar dari pengalaman para kerabat dan sahabat.

Salah satu yang mencuat ke permukaan adalah apa yang terjadi pada Prita! Selaku sesama ‘orang awam’, kami merasa prihatin saat kasus ini berujung pada gugatan di pengadilan dan keputusan hukum yang dibebankan ke Ibu Prita hanya karena ‘aktivitas wajar’; curhat sebagai konsumen yang tidak puas dengan pelayanan yang diberikan.

Sampai sekarang kami masih belum mengerti kesalahan Ibu Prita terletak dimana di kasus ini?

Kami senang saat ini dunia sudah semakin terbuka dan transparan, dengan realita dukungan sporadis yang melimpah untuk perjuangan Ibu Prita. Cukup sudahi penderitaan Sang Ibu, dan besar harapan kami tidak akan terjadi Prita-Prita lain di dunia yang vital, dunia medis dan hukum, di negara kita tercinta ini.

Jadikan dunia medis sekarang dan ke depan bersih dari oknum ‘mafia’; kalau masih kotor mungkin kita bersama perlu melakukan pasteurisasi berulang-ulang, ataupun sterilisasi aja sekalian!

Saatnya masyarakat yang berujar!
Saatnya konsumen menentukan pilihan, serta memperoleh haknya untuk memperoleh pelayanan yang layak dengan harga yang wajar!

Well, it’s been a long time coming. Jakarta’s most “prestige” indie label, Aksara Records officially shut down their business yesterday (18/09). The news itself wasn’t unpredicted regarding rumors about bankruptcy and hiring Aldo Sianturi (previously, THAT guy who made lame but hot selling compilation universal CDs) earlier this year.

The status of their artists roster are unknown at this time except for SORE and White Shoes and the Couples Company who will be joining virtually the same company men, David Tarigan and Aldo Sianturi in Raksasa Records.

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Coiffeur – Humedad
Coiffeur is not the name of a band, but the alias of a young folk singer and songwriter from Morón, a city in the greater Buenos Aires area). Humedad is one of the finest songs from his third album, El Tonel De Las Danaides, which was released this year by Estamos Felices (Argentina’s coolest independent label, you should check them out).

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Toecutter – Best Party Ever (Jordan Lightyear & Jimmy2sox remix)
Best Party Ever pretty much sums up Toecutter, a man called David Harris from Milano, New South Wales who creates dancefloor-friendly progressive house music. Apparently, Toecutter has been sitting on this song since 1984 when he recorded the hook onto a cassette and then spent 25 years deliberating on its merits.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
The Property Line – The Start
The Property Line have only been around a few months but they’ve been building quite a local following with their brand of psychedelia-tinged country-rock. Their EP (which is available for free download on their site) is pretty strong, and nowhere is it stronger than on The Start, in which the band infuses a little Sufjan into their sound, with absolutely stunning results.

CHILE: Super 45
Gen – ¿Qué Le Pasó A Mi Rap
Es is the latest album by Gen (Freddy Olguin). Putting together amazing beats, social critique rhymes and sounds from another dimension, the Chilean rapper has taken the experience of listening to hip hop to a whole new level. An army of producers has helped him develop a very distinctive personality for his record, which can be compared to the sound of Flying Lotus, Subtle or even The RZA, with the result something nothing short of future-like music. It’s refreshing, experimental and highly exciting.

CHINA: Wooozy
Today – Before Ending
Before Ending is taken from Today’s debut album which was released last year. They are searching for hope and happiness by watching everyone’s love life as a third person. You won’t feel lonely after listening to their songs. The band’s new album, Live The Life, will be out soon.

COLOMBIA: Colombia Urbana
Miss Muffin – Bways ‘n’ Gyals
What happens if you put together Juan Valdez and Bob Marley? Well, the answer to this experiment can be given by Isabella Escobar aka Miss Muffin, the known name for this promising talent of Colombian reggae. Originating from Antioquia, with Caribbean blood, Miss Muffin has released Hear This, an album that explores in a curious manner the various possibilities of reggae.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
Eumig & Chinon – This Fang
The last Danish track of 2009 is also a MAP exclusive. Eumig & Chinon aka Christian Kastbjerg has kindly provided this kickass piece of funky housetronica titled This Fang, which will be on his debut EP coming out sometime next year. You’ve got to groove.

ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
Banjo Or Freakout – Upside Down
I’m bending the rules a little this month because Alessio Natalizia, who trades under the name Banjo Or Freakout, is Italian – but he’s based in London so we can claim him as our own. Just as well because his awesome soundtracks, all wrapped up in a dreamy melodious electronic haze, are worth breaking down national boundaries for.

ESTONIA: Popop
Malcolm Lincoln – Me Iz Loaded With Zoul
Malcolm Lincoln has been active only for about a month so there’s not much of a biography yet. The band is the brainchild of Robin Juhkental, who is joined by Madis Kubu aka Fretless Rämbu for live shows. Five more songs are downloadable here.

FINLAND: Glue
Rex Willer – My Girl
Rex Willer is a five-piece indie band who recorded the excellent Inner Moray Scenes EP at their home studio earlier this year. Influenced by My Morning Jacket, Steely Dan and Death Cab For Cutie, they are driven by groovy bass lines and old-school keyboard sounds, without forgetting good guitar licks. Let yourself be caught by the irresistible melody of My Girl while Rex Willer finishes some new material due out early next year.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Michael Wookey – Songs About Snow
At the age of 15, Michael Wookey was given a portable pump organ which belonged to his grandfather, who was an organist during World War II. This instrument inspired Michael to write some songs and start collecting obscure instruments. Now 26, he has released three albums and by using a portable studio, he has recorded in various sheds, basements and meat lockers. He now lives in the red light district of Paris. The French describe his music as folk baroque.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Dobré – The Melody Is A Stranger
Sometimes you realise within minutes what creative potential a musician has, and Dobré comes into that category. Usually found playing eclectic indie-folk with his mates Sepp Kennedy, he just released a ‘best of’ solo record called Tools ‘n’ Toys which you can download here. The Melody Is A Stranger is a downtempo piece of indie which strongly reminds me of early Peter Gabriel.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
2-L8 – Excuse Me, But I Just Have To Explode (Part II)
2-L8’s second release – He & She, Angry Enough To Keep Loving In The Dark Ages (download it for free here) – is a masterpiece of avant-garde music that truly haunts the mind. It’s a passionate experience, leading the listener into excruciating catharsis – you look into the eyes of two lovers and see nothing but painful regret. It’s exhilarating and rare to hear such florid arrangements based on sharp stringed instruments and theremin, trembling, frantically passionate vocals, desperate and bleak lyrics coupled with a sense of hope and all of them laced with uncompromising experimentation, true emotional resonance and weight. A total seductive triumph.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Morðingjarnir – Manvisa
Punk-rock trio Morðingjarnir (“The Murderers”) play fast and sharp three-to-four chord songs, often with some dark humour. Atli, Haukur and Helgi are influenced by Dead Kennedys and local punk heroes Fræbbblarnir. Manvisa is a song featured on their third album, Flóttinn Mikli, with guest vocals from Kata of the band Mammút.

INDIA: Indiecision
The Mavyns – Greener Than The Sea
The Mavyns (pronounced “May-wins”) are a rock act from Mumbai. Their music is a particularly refreshing take on the new British post-punk revival. Powered by piano-driven melodies and a charming disposition, the recently-formed quartet already look set for greater things. Greener Than The Sea makes no bones about its Beatles affectations culminating in a dizzying guitar romp. This live recording from an excellent recent set in the city is a definite sign of a career path that looks to be going only one way – up!

IRELAND: Nialler9
O Emperor – Po
After an impressive appearance on Irish TV and some blog love from The Torture Garden, Cork band O Emperor are definitely on the ‘ones to watch’ list. Especially, though, after repeated plays of their debut single, Po, an unassuming number that reveals itself on multiple listens thanks to its snaking ephemeral guitar lick and a vocal that lodges in your brain for 24 hours at a time.

ITALY: Polaroid
The Calorifer Is Very Hot! – Evolution On Stand-By
Italy is well known for its Prime Minister’s various conflicts of interest. For this month’s MAP I decided to act in a diplomatic way and promote a band and record that I helped to release. I could tell you that I believe these guys play some of the best indie-pop in this country. I could tell you that their lo-fi punk attitude to songwriting deserves worldwide attention. I could beg you to go to see them live and promise that you will have fun. But these would be all lies. They’re here just because I put my money in their new album – buy it!

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
Sonic Attack Blaster – 20000Volt
Sonic Attack Blaster, an alternative band from Tokyo’s underground scene, call their music ’samurai rock’. Their songs actually have Japanese retro melody lines that give them an early-90s feel. Interesting and really rather weird. Their new album will be released in January.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa
Rana Santacruz – Cajita De Barro
Rana Santacruz’s richness lies deep in Mexican soil: a buried treasure of plundered Celtic tunes, ranchera-song lamentations and magical-realistic folktales that could have been part of a lost chapter from a rural cuento written by Juan Rulfo. Chicavasco is his debut album – a delicate collection of bohemian vignettes permeated by a true sensorial feel of rain, leather and mezcal. Watch him come up the hills and down the slopes as he slowly claims his place among one of our favourite singer-songwriters.

NETHERLANDS: Amsterdam Event Guide
The Very Sexuals – Bowie Eyes
Hallo from Holland! This is our first submission and we’re happy to introduce The Very Sexuals. Starting out as a project between three or four other bands, this act have come together to produce an impressive, emotive and totally free album which has left listeners in dreamy shoegaze heaven since its release earlier this year. Be sure to download Bowie Eyes and look out for album number two in 2010.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
Signer – +Kicks And Kicks
Bevan Smith is the musician who records as Signer. Smith started out as an indie-guitar fan but gave that up for psychedelic electronica and synths. His latest album, Next We Bring You The Fire, has a more ambient sound than earlier records, toning down some of the more leftfield noise elements. +Kicks And Kicks isn’t that typical of the album – it’s poppier and more rhythmic – but gives a good introduction to Signer’s ability to create music which is accessible but slightly unsettling.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Moddi – A Sense Of Grey
Moddi is a unique artist from the northern parts of Norway who will release his debut album Floriography on February 8. His music is poetic and dreamy, but at the same time there is a roughness in his sound. I often think of the rugged northern nature when I listen to his music, which is full of beauty but also darkness and sudden changes.

PERU: SoTB
El Hombre Misterioso – 80 Veces 80
The four members of El Hombre Misterioso are so versatile they would sound completely different if separated. They are always willing to experiment with rock and their second album, Inside The Corporation, narrates national historical stories. 80 Veces 80 remembers the worst days of Peruvian history, when the 1980s crisis was worsened by car bombs in a civil war that nearly destroyed the country.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Noiserv – Melody Pops
Noiserv is one-man band David Santos, a very talented multi-instrumentalist from Lisbon. His self-released 2008 debut LP, One Hundred Miles From Thoughtlessness, was highly acclaimed by the mainstream Portuguese press. In May, Noiserv released a single through the Scottish label Autumn Ferment Records.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
Byron – King Of Clowns
Releasing their third album this year (A Kind Of Alchemy), alternative rock act Byron has already developed a unique sound, an alchemy of Jeff Buckley’s lyricism and Porcupine Tree’s neo-prog escapism. Dan’s voice goes from soft and warm to almost tormented, all the way spiced with wild-on-the-verge-of-insanity harmonies. The keyboard work shines with brilliant prog-inspired interventions, the guitar-playing is rock-solid (pun intended) and the use of flute on several tracks also works miracles, bringing a certain distinctness to the whole. Did I say Jethro Tull? Well, you get the picture.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
The Kays Lavelle – Aftermath
If any film directors are reading, do yourself a favour and download this song. With its eerily mesmeric piano refrain and increasingly intense, impassioned vocals, Aftermath is just begging to be played during an emotionally-wrought scene or at the end of the movie as the credits run. A studio version of Aftermath featuring the full band will appear on The Kays Lavelle’s debut album due out early next year.

SINGAPORE: I’m Waking Up To…
For This Cycle – For What It’s Worth
Sixteen-year-old Weiwen Seah has a lot to be proud of. Performing under the persona For This Cycle, he has released a five-track EP this year and is currently recording his full-length album due next year. Weiwen brings a welcome breath of pop goodness in a music scene better known for its underground subculture with shades of Jason Mraz and Dashboard Confessional. In fact, it’s easy to forget that someone so young sings with as much conviction on this month’s selection, For What It’s Worth.

SOUTH AFRICA: Musical Mover & Shaker!
Van Coke Kartel – Voor Ons Stof Word
Van Coke Kartel is an Afrikaans rock band. Francois Van Coke and Wynand Myburgh were previously in Fokofpolisiekar, who revolutionised Afrikaans rock music by challenging and shifting rigid mindsets. Van Coke Kartel proceeded to explode onto the SA music scene with sold-out shows and rave reviews. The group has been busy working on their new album, Skop, Skiet En Donner, which will be out in early 2010. Look out for it, it’s sure to blow your mind.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
Oh My Melodies – I Like It All
Oh My Melodies is the US-based solo project of Jiyoung Lee, vocalist of I Love JH. She now offers home-recorded electronic pop with sweet lyrics on the recently released EP So Lazy, which can be downloaded here. I Like It All is a catchy tune with a bit of synth that makes doing the chores seem like the most delightful task.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
Symfoniorkestern - Tänd Eld På Dig Själv (För Det Du Tror På)
Wow, it was a no-brainer this month. Symfoniorkestern are a uniquely Swedish group. They are like an indie-rock band but with a grab-bag of unusual orchestration, lyrics in Swedish and lovely harmonies. The new EP, Tänd Eld På Dig Själv (För Det Du Tror På), is available here for free in its awesome, spellbinding entirety. The band spent a year and a half recording it – I only wish I could somehow give this review the same amount of care.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I’m Floating
Chll Pll – Dick Moves
Sacramento, CA’s Zach Hill has a new project, Chll Pll – a slice of the rather raucous, noisy, blunt force corner of the electro-pop world. Dick Moves is from the upcoming debut Aggressively Humble, out now on Porter Records.

VENEZUELA: Barquisimento
Fordelucs – No Queda Mas
Alternative rock band Fordelucs have been winning over fans and critics alike and building up a name for themselves in Venezuela’s music scene. Now the boys are about to start a tour that will take them beyond the borders of their country. No Queda Mas is taken from their first release, Mundo.

*65daysofstatic (also known by the abbreviations 65dos, 65days, or simply 65) are an instrumental post-rock band from Sheffield, England. The band is composed of Paul Wolinski, Joe Shrewsbury, Rob Jones and Simon Wright. The band has thus far released three albums: The Fall of Math, One Time for All Time, and The Destruction of Small Ideas.

“The sheer intensity of the band’s musical and technical prowess is projected for the world to revel in, cascading every part of their electronic orchestra around your ears and constructing immense soundscapes that defy standards or chart-humping ideals.” – Drowned in Sound

It’s a combustion of man and machine when Sheffield-based post-math-rock beast 65daysofstatic delivers barrages of atmospheric, crunched guitar, contemplative piano, electronic samples and glitches and hardcore live drums with a crackling intensity that builds up to zap you like static electricity.

Their first record, The Fall of Math (2004), was an intriguing, raw rush of sound with a stop-start structure, brooding disposition and cathartic endings similar to that of Explosions in the Sky. Their second, One Time for All Time (2005), was so fast and furious, it was described by Stylus magazine as “three men making a fast, wordless, angry and occasionally redemptive noise, part guitar, part drum(machine)s, part piano, part scree, part ****-knows-what.”. But it was their third, The Destruction of Small Ideas (2007), a surprisingly quieter and much more profound album that got critics and music lovers falling over themselves in gibbering adoration, leading to the band’s 2009 recording of a live album Escape from New York and such ornate praise as:

“The Destruction of Small Ideas is a weight, a tower of babel, a journey, learnings, understandings, communication, evolution. I’ve been waiting. I was promised this or something like it. The rise and fall. All so deep, so rich, so comically dynamic and detailed and powerful for it that it makes me want to cry.” (Stylus).

On a calmer note, Sheffield-based band 65daysofstatic’s (especially on their third album) are primarily epic instrumental tunes that solidly blend several directions, styles and moods in a distinct sound. There are the crushing guitars, fuzzy layers and twitching electronic dissonance of post-rock and the somewhat-Mogwai-like “quiet-to-loud-to-very,very loud” song structure, the thundering stomp of Krautrock-style precision drumming, and the peculiar time signatures that identify math rock as a major influence. But there are also the occasional and unexpected male and female vocals that further humanise the music, and there is the quiet, almost delicate piano that gives the music a surprisingly lovely and contemplative edge.

While the band members chop and change with speed and precision, they are also masters of the slow, suspenseful build-up. Often a piece begins with a slow opener, with atmospheric sounds playing off one another. Suddenly the pace picks up; instruments, sounds and parts are shuffled and woven into a tighter and tighter grid. But just when they have worked themselves into a perfect fit, a thunderclap of crashing dissonance and bluster fury hits; harmony is smashed to smithereens, bits of sound come tumbling down into a growing silence.

At this live concert of music a little psychotic and grippingly beautiful, as the waves of noise writhe and crash around you with strength of purpose and majesty, you may think yourself unusually, euphorically light.

65daysofstatic was formed in Sheffield, England in 2000, and is today made up of accomplished musicians Paul Wolinski (guitar and programming), Joe Shrewsbury (guitar), Rob Jones (drums) and Simon Wright (bass and programming). They like performing live and have opened for The Cure and played alongside such artists as Metallica, Lostprophets and Deftones.

Finally we get the chance to showcase this great indie-pop band from Buenos Aires on MAP. Entre Ríos is a musical project led by Sebastian Carreras (vocals, keyboards, guitar) that has been around since 1998. Their first albums were recorded with Isol as the main singer, but since her departure in 2005 they’ve featured different guest vocalists live and in the studio. Frontera is a MAP-exclusive premiere from their brand new EP that will be released in a couple of weeks, with Josefina Mac Loughlin on vocals.

Boy & Bear – Mexican Mavis

Sydney singer-songwriter Dave Hosking has taken a slight change of direction with his new outfit Boy & Bear. Releasing his first EP Marmalade Hill late last year, Hosking has decided to abandon the songs from the album (which I was still rather fond of) and start fresh, writing towards a more mature and original sound. Producer of the first EP, Andrew Macken, has proven to be a great collaborator with his intricate and almost narrative-based approach to the arrangement and production.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado

The Name – Come Out Tonite

If I had to bet which Brazilian band could repeat the success of CSS on foreign lands it would be The Name. Assonance, their new well-produced EP, presents songs that could put them side by side with some of the greatest names of the post-punk revival of the 00s or the major bands of nu-rave scene. Come Out Tonite is here to prove it.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music

Magneta Lane – Love And Greed

Magneta Lane were on the verge of world (well, Canadian) domination a few years ago, and then they suddenly vanished. They’re back now with a new album, Gambling With God, but you wouldn’t know it from the total lack of support the album is getting from both the band and their label. Nonetheless, it’s a pretty outstanding release, and as songs like Love And Greed show, Magneta Lane could still conquer the world… assuming, that is, they want to.

CHILE: Super 45

Astro – Raifilter

Alongside electro-poppers Moustache, Astro (Andrés Nusser and Octavio Cavieres) is one of those noble bands cultivating the sound of acts such as MGMT or The Knife – just on the verge of the night spectrum of pop – acquiring a good combination of simplicity and a good dose of highly contagious fun for their debut album Le Disc Du Astrou. Following this trail, Raifilter is a song with a very special melody, the result of very intense arrangements as well excellent vocals courtesy of Nusser, who shapes a beach-like tune to give us a perfect excuse to have a neverending sound party.

CHINA: Wooozy

Loudspeaker – I Will Be Back

Established in 1999, Loudspeaker is the hardcore pioneer in Shanghai. This song is from the I Will Be Back EP released in September. You can download the whole EP here. Loudspeaker’s new album will be ready at the beginning of 2010.

Hety And Zambo are a duo with the capacity to get you on your feet and dance. The Kings of Creole, as everyone knows them in the dancehall underground scene, came together six years ago in the island of San Andres with one objective – to create good music with their own rhythms, writings and language.

The Kites – Play

I stumbled across these guys on a MySpace cruise recently and was immediately charmed by their quite British-sounding pop-rock. The Kites may not be revolutionizing music, but less has been known to do it. Not least when it’s this infectious. ESTONIA: Popop

Antonina – Itsuyorimo

When Helene Vetik started to write music, she played on the streets to get some pocket money, started a high school punk-band that didn’t last long and sang at cheesy corporate parties. However, it was when she began to record her old songs into lo-fi electro-pop that she teamed up with Zanduro (keyboard) and Mihkel Masso (guitar) to form Antonina.

FINLAND: Glue

Cleaning Women – Across The Void

From planet Clinus 1 robots CW01, CW03 and CW04 (subbing for CW02 who was lost in action) create industrial avant garde music using a wide array of instruments, some rock lines, a few jazzy beats and a lot of funky grooves. The trio has just released its third album, U, which includes some futuristic tracks that could form the soundtrack of a Philip K Dick novel. One of them is the instrumental Across The Void, a good example of the spooky atmospheric music these hygienic robots make.

FRANCE: ZikNation

Kitsch Device – Is This Home Now?

Kitsch Device is a group straight out of the Parisian scene who take us on a high. They first started playing as a hobby but they now scour concert rooms in Paris and are always a blast to watch for their style and professionalism. Is This Home Now? carries a folk-rock melody which will make you shake your head and tap the floor with your foot to the beat.

GERMANY: Blogpartei

Candelilla – #13

Candelilla is a female four-piece based in Munich. Their impulsive sound fits into no existing scheme – it varies from Dresden Dolls to Sonic Youth, from punky grunge to vanguard indie. Straight drums accompany the piano, a whetted guitar accents murky basslines, all highlighted by the staccato voices. #13 is the first single from their debut reasonreasonreasonreason.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda

Giannis Aggelakas – Volta Sto Dasos

Psyhi Vathia is the soundtrack for a movie directed by Pantelis Voulgaris. It takes place in 1949 and tells the story of two brothers who fight in two different camps during the Greek civil war. Giannis Aggelakas, who was singer and songwriter of the legendary rock band Trypes, composes an emotionally compelling score drawing on traditional musical heritage. Sad, evocative instrumental melodies rich with contemporary elements coalesce with ethnic nuance that depict the era and echo the film’s mood. Volta Sto Dasos (“Walk In The Woods”) is a marvelous track that reflects the two elements of the movie – pain and hope – through the lament of violin and the serenity of the guitar.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music

Kimono – Black

Kimono is an experimental rock trio hailing from Reykjavik and Halifax, Canada. They have released three full-length albums, the last one in collaboration with Icelandic producer Curver (of Ghostigital). Black will be on their upcoming fourth album, Easy Music For Difficult People.

INDIA: Indiecision

Pinknoise – Dream Dream

Pinknoise is an experimental rock act from Kolkata that takes nu-jazz sensibilities and combines them with angular, guitar-driven rock. Dream Dream comes from a soon-to-be-released live DVD. It’s the quintessential spacious, open jam that frontlady Jayashree Singh orchestrates with this band. With mid-song tempo changes and lazy atmospherics, it’s a fun five minutes through slacker town.

INDONESIA: Deathrockstar

Santamonica – Bobsessed

Santamonica’s album Curiouser And Curiouser was praised by the media as an eclectic mixture of pop, bossa nova, electronic and classic waltz drawing influences from Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and My Bloody Valentine to classic Disney soundtracks.

IRELAND: Nialler9

Band On An Island – Back Disco

The debut release from Kildare’s Band On An Island, The Sound Sweep, revels in the details of hometown life, taking in nights by the campfire, love, drinking, getting into trouble, picking yourself up again and this cute nightclub-themed song featuring the vocals of Claire Prendergast. Combine these myriad of issues with the music – a mix of country, folk, raucous guitar music and heartfelt ballads – and you’ve got the essence of Band On An Island.

ITALY: Polaroid

Annie Hall – Morning News

It would be too easy to describe the sound of the Annie Hall as a Beatles influence revised through a folk sensibility. But this way you would overlook the simple fact that these songs are truly touching in such an immediate way. Annie Hall just released their second album and are now ready to spend the next months touring the country non-stop, as they usually do.

JAPAN: JPOP Lover

Sebastian X – Tour Star People

Sebastian X are an impressive Tokyo-based outfit with indie-pop and punkish leanings. Their brilliant debut album Wonderful World was finally released last week. The band, who don’t use guitars, have catchy melodies driven by the cute pop vocal of Manatsu Nagahara.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa

Pepepe (feat. Cyane) – Sleep With You

Here is a track from Pepepe’s latest album, Roba Orgón de Plantas y Animales, released on the Poni Republic label. Pepepe is one of the monikers of Pesina Siller, a 21-year-old electronic musician and visual artist who was ranked among the top 50 in Radiohead’s Reckoner remix contest. He’s the kid behind various projects that show the multiple faces to his mystic persona, with sounds that go from dubstep to psychedelic folk. This song is full of clicks, cuts, lots of aleatory processing and a beautiful collaboration with Guadalajara’s vocalist Cyane.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat

Psychic Powers – Wellington

Psychic Powers are an international duo – Nik Brinkman is a New Zealander and Alejandro Cohen is from Los Angeles. The two collaborate on songwriting from opposite sides of the world via the internet. This piece of very 80s sounding synth-pop is about Nik’s home town, New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington – bringing together the local and the global in a way that seems purpose made for the Music Alliance Pact. The song has been released on 7″ vinyl by US label Geographic North.

NORWAY: Eardrums

Kråkesølv – Privat Regn

Kråkesølv is a quartet from Bodø, a town in the north of Norway. They sing in their dialect and their music can be put somewhere between pop, indie and post-rock. The band have received much acclaim for their lyrics and the reviews of their recently released debut, Trådnøsting, have been very positive.

PERU: SoTB

Los Protones – Swinging Lima

Los Protones are an instrumental band formed in Lima in 2007 who play in a style that combines psychedelia, surf and garage-rock. Their self-titled debut CD was released in February 2009 by the Peruvian label Discos Gordos. It is an album where there are no words, although they’re not necessary – the guitar solos are the universal language and the titles of songs such as El Desvío paint pictures that could easily relate to the soundtrack of our experiences.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?

Casino Royal – Casino Royal Deluxe

Led by Pedro Janela, Casino Royal are a quintet from Figueira da Foz, a town known for its sandy beaches and its casino built in the 19th century. Casino Royal create music that takes us back to a certain living by the post-war European jetset. Would you like your cocktail shaken or stirred?

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise

Silent Strike – 27

Silent Strike (Ioan Titu) is a 27-year-old electronic music composer and sound designer from Bacau. He is influenced by Aphex Twin, Future Sound Of London, Orbital and opened for Faithless and Bonobo. 27 is a little gem of electronic sounds arranged in an acoustic manner and it was released for his birthday.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop

The Unwinding Hours – Knut

The Unwinding Hours have quietly risen from the ashes of the much-loved Aerogramme and the early evidence suggests they’re going to be every bit as wondrous as their former guise. All the ingredients are there – the gorgeously gentle pacing, the elegant orchestration, Craig B’s yearning vocals. Knut, taken from their self-titled debut album due out early next year on Chemikal Underground, is a MAP exclusive sanctioned by the band and their record label.

Lunarin – Ariel (File Under Easy Listening remix)

Singapore is a small country, so we’ve formed a rather close-knit bunch of musicians and friends. One such collaboration between friends happens to be The Lard Brothers’ remix of Lunarin’s Ariel. While a relatively new group, The Lard Brothers have been busy making waves spinning as a DJ group and religiously reworking many classic songs by Singaporean bands. Their efforts don’t go unrecognised with this trip-hop laced remix of Ariel by the melodic rock band, Lunarin, perfect for the monsoon season that’s hitting our shores just about now.

Die Heuwels Fantasties – Our Heritage

Die Heuwels Fantasties are an Afrikaans group, incorporating elements of many genres, from hip-hop beats, flat out dance beats, to rap and rock sounds. Die Heuwels Fantasties teamed up with The Soweto Gospel Choir, HHP and JR to produce a song for Heritage Day. The song is called Our Heritage and features Pierre Greeff of Die Heuwels Fantasties singing in English. All in all, it’s a song with the message to celebrate our heritage and our unity as South Africans – artfully combining the many different cultural spheres into a feelgood track.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK

Playgirl – Happy Mania

Female trio Playgirl emerged in September with a retro pop sound from a time when James Bond was still played by Sean Connery. Inspired by The Pipettes, equipped with identical outfits and cute dance moves, Playgirl is currently the most adorable act to come out of Korea.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease

Madamm – Örnen

There’s very little info online about this mostly all-girl group from Gothenburg. I was struck by the band’s wanton energy and the loose nature of their songs. Örnen is a demo so who knows what its final shape may be, but I hope they retain the song’s raw energy.

TURKEY: Reset!

Bon Mod – Chocolate Cheesecake

Chemistry is all there is to a band. After meeting about a year ago, the duo started working together instantly as Bon Mod. They take their love of partying and a reckless attitude to make indie, electro and disco-flavored songs. They are possibly the most exciting new band for the season ahead.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I’m Floating

People Eating People – All The Hospitals

People Eating People is the solo work of Nouela Johnston, previously known for her work with Pacific Northwestern act Mon Frere. Her self-titled debut LP is a blending of Fiona Apple’s emotion with Regina Spektor’s penchant for melody. All The Hospitals is a catchy tune – we’ll see if Johnston can separate herself from the crowded female pack.

VENEZUELA: Barquisimeto Musical

Amigos Invisibles – Mentiras

Amigos Invisibles (“Invisible Friends”) has been around the alternative/funk/pop local scene for many years. Their groovy rhythms and funny lyrics, filled with Venezuelan pop culture, made them legends in their country and finally got the attention of music lovers worlwide, touring Latin America, USA and Australia. They signed with David Byrne’s Luaka Pop label in 1996. To celebrate their Latin Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album, I have selected a song from that record, Comercial, called Mentiras.

Segenerik apapun riff yang digunakan, dan walaupun growl yang dimuntahkan juga tidak menunjukkan karakteristik yang menonjol dibandingkan band metal sejenis, tetap saja band metal dengan hasil rekaman yang baik, dan attitude yang benar akan menghasilkan sesuatu yang patut diberi perhatian.

Dan begitupun Down For Life, sebagai band metal yang bisa dibilang visioner dalam organisasi, dimana personelnya cukup sering berperan sebagai penyelenggara gigs-gigs cadas di Jawa Tengah, perlu diberi perhatian untuk didengarkan permainan distorsi nya yang seperti senapan machine, gebukan drum yang seperti serbuan panser, cabikan bas yang menekan jiwa, dan semburan growl yang menurut saya seperti hydran pemadam kebakaran.

Adalah musisi kamar bermodalkan seperangkat komputer yang digunakan untuk merekam lagu-lagu akustik seringan musik pop. Walaupun sebelumnya ia tidak terpikir untuk berkarir dibidang musik, namun rupanya afeksi nya ke musik terlalu besar, sehingga disela kesibukannya Adhitia Sofyan berhasil merekam 11 lagu di kamarnya untuk dirilis oleh Zapato Records pada akhir tahun 2009 ini.

Echolight berawal dari sebuah keinginan untuk berkarya dan menyalurkan ide kreatifitas bermusik. Terbentuk di akhir tahun 2006 dengan formasi awal Fariz (gitar, vokal), Gega (gitar), Dito (bass), dan Fendy (drum). Memulai dengan menyusun materi sebuah lagu dan setelah latihan demi latihan, mereka berempat menyadari kekurangan sebuah vokal yang berkarakter. Lalu tahun 2007 awal Rayhan Sudradjat bergabung untuk mengisi vokal dan keyboard. Debut panggung mereka di Smiles Waterfall #4 mengisi langkah awal mereka untuk terus berkarya. Echolight sempat merilis singles pertama mereka yaitu “Daydream Song” dan “Falling Down”. Lagu dengan suasana shoegaze/dream pop yang kental terinspirasi dari band band luar dan dalam yang memiliki genre yang serupa.

Terjadi masalah pada Echolight di akhir tahun 2007. Rayhan (vokal, keyboard, gitar) telah mundur dari Echolight. Masalah ini menyebabkan Echolight berada di era vakumnya. Dengan memulai konsep baru tanpa mengubah nama, Echolight kembali masuk studio untuk memulai dan menyusun materi baru. Sebuah konsep baru dari Echolight yaitu menjadi band instrumental (minus vokal). Mencoba untuk menyampaikan makna tanpa menggunakan sebuah bahasa verbal. “Imitasi Titik” adalah lagu awal dari sebuah perubahan Echolight. Musik yang berbeda dari Echolight sebelumnya. Alunan delay dengan balutan distorsi menjadi sebuah ikon di dalam musik Echolight. Mengambil tema permasalah urban dan segala unsur-unsur di dalamnya dengan isolasi emosi, amarah, kejenuhan, depresi dan khayalan. Hal tersebut menjadi latar belakang karya-karya Echolight sekarang dan kedepannya. Singles terbarunya di tahun 2009, “Glare of Glowing City” dan “M.A.D (Maturity After Depression)” menjadi sebuah bentuk image terbaru dari Echolight. And here they are, an echo with the light…

Bentuk studio pertama yang direkam adalah lagu ‘tentara cinta’ yang dirilis majalah provoke sabagai kompilasi. waktu bergulir, the safari akhirnya mencipta lagu berjudul ‘disko di rumah’ pada tahun 2004 awal. lalu pada satu kesempatan vokalis edo menjadi vokal tamu di lagu ‘underground trash, milik Agrikulture, sejak itu edo selalu menjadi vokal dan mc yang mengiring 3 dj dalam live pa nya, lalu suatu hari edo membawa lagu ‘disko di rrumah’ ke studio agrikulture dan meminta agrikulture me remix lagi ini dengan pertimbangan meramaikan budaya remix dui industri musik lokal. siapa nyana kalau lagu ini malahan menjadi lebih terkenal ketimbang asli nya, dan sempat mmuncaki beberapa chart radio indonesia.

Pada tahun 2007 akhirnya the safari mengeluarkan full lenght album bertajuk ‘material dansa galau’ dengan publisher paviliun records. harus diakui album ini tidak pernah berhasil mengangkat the safari ke permukaan musik indonesia. tapi ini dikarenakan mereka tidak pernah terlalu berusaha untuk mendapatkan rekognisi dan cukup puas dengan keadaan mereka. waktu bergulir, pada tahun 2009 the safari akhirnya mengumpulkan lagi lagu untuk bahan album, namun saat lagu ke 7 rampung, tiba-tiba semua member the safari menyadari kalau mereka tidak akan kemana-mana. mungkin adalah sikap skeptik mereka terhadap indusitri musik lokal yang ada sekarang. sampai akhirnya pada tanggal 25 oktober 2009 di sebuah festival bertajuk urbanfest, the safari akhirnya memutuskan untuk mengakhiri karir musiknya.

Tidak ada raut sedih dan kecewa. karena band ini memang tidak pernah menjadi bagian yang dalam di industri musik lokal. begitu juga membernya yang terlihat biasa saja. life goes on. the last day of the safari was there…berakhir di sore hari, bukan di malam, interval waktu yang mereka agungkan.

We’re sorry to announce you that Risa Saraswati, vocalist of Homogenic, have decided to resign from Homogenic due to dissimilarity of Risa’s and Homogenic’s future plans. We agreed that this will be the best option for both of us. We aware that the resignment of Risa, will be a big change for Homogenic and Fans, but We hope everything will be okay, looking, listening, praying that things are changing for the better.

Lipgloss – Land Of Lords
This band from Buenos Aires released their first EP a couple of months ago and Land Of Lords is our favorite song from it. Lipgloss sound like they’ve been listening to British rock all their life and you sure can feel the influence of bands like The Stone Roses at the end of the song, with the psychedelic guitars and all. AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Cloud Control – Gold Canary
New music from the Blue Mountains! Only it sounds kinda like it originates from somewhere deep in America. Cloud Control always had an earthy, pastoral quality to their music but it sounds all the more temporally appropriate post-Fleet Foxes. Less jangle and more twang. Gold Canary is pulled from their debut album expected early 2010. It has some rootsy backing vocals and yelping, tambourine/handclap percussion, references to family members in the lyrics and then… a synth solo. This song is rad.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Constantina – Sobe Ladeira
There is something special about Constantina that goes beyond their music. The absence of vocals never leaves you with a feeling of emptiness. It’s just the opposite. The instrumental songs are so deep and strong that lyrics would limit them to what we can express with words.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
The Balconies – Serious Bedtime
It’s almost mind-boggling how good and how talented The Balconies are. They have two incredible lead singers (in brother and sister Jacquie and Steve Neville), both of whom are also astoundingly good songwriters, and they’re backed by one of the steadiest drummers I’ve ever seen. They’ve barely been around for more than a year but they’re generating a whole lot of buzz (their debut has just been released and it’s already charting nationally). Songs like Serious Bedtime make it easy to see why.

CHILE: Super 45
Tonossepia – Happy Habibi Te Vez Mas Feliz
Tonossepia (Diego Vergara) is one of the most advanced musicians in the Chilean electronic scene. Constantly evolving in his way of creating music, this year he released his fourth album, Happy Habibi, an effort full of organic textures, warm harmonies and rhythmical variations. By mixing, almost to perfection, IDM and hip hop, Tonossepia has a lot of robot style and rap style.

CHINA: Wooozy
Silkfloss – Mon Amour
Mylène Chan (Muxitu) and Quan Du formed Silkfloss at the start of this year in Beijing. They are electronica, they are trip-hop, they are everything that brings you softness and fills you with love. Mylène also collaborates with many local electronic producers as a vocalist.

COLOMBIA: Colombia Urbana
Jiggy Drama – Contra La Pared
Direct from San Andres Island, Heartan Lever – better known in the artistic scene as Jiggy D – comes loaded with cool rhymes and party beats. Jiggy mixes Antillean dancehall with old-school hip hop and Contra La Pared proves that when something is good, it doesn’t have to be forced. The combination of typical Colombian sounds (papayera in this case) makes him the perfect choice to represent the nation in MAP. Jiggy is currently working on his new album, Nerdside.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
Sebastian Lind – Stay
A pop natural and excellent singer, 20-year-old Sebastian Lind excites with an enticing mix of singer-songwriter acoustics and crackling electronica. He has just released his first single Stop These Feet, but here’s Stay – a strong contender when it comes time to select a second.

ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
The Voluntary Butler Scheme – The Eiffel Tower And The BT Tower
This month’s song comes from the English Midlands courtesy of awesome one-man-band Rob Jones aka The Voluntary Butler Scheme. He’s a little scruffy around the edges but he serves up a tasty dish of pure pop. Although probably best experienced live, his debut album At Breakfast, Dinner, Tea (how old-school English is that title?) is full of sprightly tunes, huge hooks and amusing lyrics and is well worth checking out.

ESTONIA: Popop
I’ll Hit Her – Noise In Your Mind
There’s not much info about Estonian electro-poppers I’ll Hit Her and Googling that name will probably get you some quite disturbing results. Listing Aqua, 2 Unlimited and Joy Division as influences on their MySpace page, that’s really as diverse as you can get.

FINLAND: Glue
The Capital Beat – Feel The Reggae
This is not the kind of song you would expect to hear from a Finnish band, but The Capital Beat phenomenally recreate the warm sounds of Jamaica on their first album, A Greater Fire. This eight-piece combo takes Jamaican music to a new latitude and there is only one condition – feel the reggae and do the ska.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Pascal Comelade – Two Maniaco Depressive Beatnicks Squabbling Over A Jane Russell Mozarella’s Stereokini
Pascal Comelade is a really special musician. He mixes common instruments with some toys he found in a flea market. This way of working gives his music a unique tone and makes the listener feel the soul of his work. In some ways, his music reminds us of Yann Tiersen – nice piano, accordion and a lot of percussion. Two Maniaco…, with its happy leading saxophone and ringing xylophone, is a track dedicated to a happy life, which makes it a must-hear before beginning a day at work.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Rhytm Police – Ghosttrain
Rhytm Police sound like they live in a metropolis as they reduce music to a strong bass line, synth sounds and sometimes quite snatchy vocals. However, they come from the rather rural Augsburg in western Bavaria. The only way to figure this out is by listening to their songs with German lyrics. But the featured song Ghosttrain shows their international attitude.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
Coin – Error 687
Coin draw their influences from the Manchester scene of the 80s and American grunge of the 90s. In their third studio album they shift their best qualities into different, equally dazzling guitar-pop shapes, sounding unclenched, enchanting and energetic. Popstitute is a beautifully balanced album filled with tremendously rich highs, unfailingly tuneful music, jagged guitars, drums and bass, which supply the rhythmic pulse and captivating hooks.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
FM Belfast – Synthia
FM Belfast was formed in late 2005 by Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson (aka Árni Plúseinn) and Lóa Hlín Hjálmtýsdóttir. For the Iceland Airwaves festival in 2006, the band expanded into a live act with up to eight (or even more) members. The core of the band is now a quartet with Árni Vilhjálmsson (of Motherfuckers In The House) and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason (of Múm). Synthia is taken from their debut album, How To Make Friends, released on the band’s own World Champion Records label last year.

INDIA: Indiecision
Teddy Boy Kill – Tonic
New Delhi’s Teddy Boy Kill represent the new Indian electronica soundscape – instantly international, slick and unrestrained by the need to reflect any inherent Indian-ness. This unsigned act from the country’s capital released their debut album, The Exit Plan, as a free download. Tonic is one of the highlights of the record – an immediately catchy dancefloor anthem that’s as temperate as it is energetic. Get ready to do something stupid.

INDONESIA: Deathrockstar
The Super Insurgent Group Of Intemperance Talent – Money Making
The Super Insurgent Group Of Intemperance Talent are the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in Indonesia. Their straight-to-the-point songs, killer hooks and good attitude has already seen them play some big venues and sell out concerts, which is very rare in Indonesia.

IRELAND: Nialler9
Trophy Boyfriend – Black Ship
Despite the silly moniker, Gregor Ruigrok aka Trophy Boyfriend still managed to impress us with his first self-titled EP. He’s still at the embyronic stages having not played live or formally released anything in Ireland yet, but judging by the electro-indie of Black Ship, we certainly hope he gets out there soon.

ITALY: Polaroid
Damien* – Confidants
Play this song and fly back in time, to around the first half of the 90s, when Britpop was full of hope and strength. Well, this is just how Damien* are today. This young and promising band from Pesaro, on the Italian east coast, is able to mix a post-punk background with a more pop attitude. The incredibly catchy Confidants is taken from their second album, out this week on Suiteside.

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
Henrytennis – Valencia Raincoats
Another progressive band in the Tokyo music scene, Henrytennis feature instrumental dynamism influenced by post-rock, IDM, jam and progressive rock. Their members come from such outstanding Japanese bands as 4 Bonjour’s Parties, Hula Hooper, Kuruucrew, Oceanlane and Shugo Tokumaru. Their excellent second album R.U.R. is released on November 11.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa
Radaid – Shine
Shine is the opening track of L’Intent, the most recent record by Radaid. Hailing from Guadalajara, Jalisco, the eight talented musicians produce a peculiar mix of pop and original rhythms. That is why traces of Indian influences echo in Shine, while the vocals are by Sofía Orozco, who not only wrote the English lyrics but also invented the dialect which has nods to the phrasing of Hindu MCs.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
O’Lovely – A Different Day
O’Lovely are from Christchurch in New Zealand’s South Island and they have a glistening, ringing guitar sound on this song that reminds me of some great bands from that city’s past such as Bailterspace and Loves Ugly Children. The band has morphed from the more poppy The O’Lovelys with singer and keyboardist Laura Lee remaining at the centre of the band. She’s joined by Perry Mahoney of Bang Bang Eche, whose guitar gives a darker, noisier feel than the earlier band. A Different Day comes from the five-track Lost Luck EP.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Firefly Effect – Never By Your Side
Oslo quartet Firefly Effect recently released their brilliant debut album, Everything Is Beautiful And You Are The Reason, on Perfect Pop Records/Solerød Records. It is full of charming indie-pop songs with organs, boy/girl harmonies and jangly guitars. They call their style “retro-futuristic sunshine pop” which is a definition of their sound I can agree on. Perfect pop!

PERU: SoTB
Emergency Blanket – Next Passenger
The music of Emergency Blanket is fully charged with life and energy, taking influences from rock classics from the 60s, 70s and 90s to achieve a vintage yet fresh and original sound. Emergency Blanket recently released their debut album, Combi + Nation, which includes songs in Spanish, English and even a combination of both languages. Next Passenger has taken them to the final of The People’s Music Awards and you can vote for the band here.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Real Combo Lisbonense – Oh!
Real Combo Lisbonense (Lisbon Real Combo) play music that takes us back to a time when everyone would dress up to dance to the sounds of an orchestra or a small ensemble. RCL is the band you would expect to hear in the casino lounge of an Ian Fleming novel. They remade some Portuguese and international popular classics of 50s and 60s and have become one of the pleasant surprises in the Portuguese indie scene this year. Shall we dance?

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
Vive La Noiz – Bird Song
Vive la Noiz could be seen as the usual alternative/indie band. Two girls and two boys starting a band in the finest DIY ethic. However, their eclectic influences and pure, melodic sound label them as post-everything because you can find anything there, genre-free. Dark Clouds And Silver Linings is regarded as one of this year’s most interesting EPs.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
Meursault – A Small Stretch Of Land
Edinburgh six-piece Meursault’s otherworldly, experimental folk seems almost tailor-made for the music blogging cognoscenti. But as A Small Stretch Of Land shows, Meursault (pronounced “mer-so”) also know when less is more, stripping the song to just acoustic guitar and vocal with crushingly beautiful effect. It’s no surprise Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison described A Small Stretch Of Land as “one of my favourite songs of last year, or indeed any year”. SINGAPORE: I’m Waking Up To…
Inch Chua – Devotion In Reality
Like the wet leaves after a thunderstorm, Devotions In Reality bring a melancholic hope to past hurts, as the first step after grief into a new light. Inch Chua is more well known in Singapore as the little dynamo of a frontwoman with rock stalwarts Allura. Taking time off to record her solo EP, she brings to the forefront another facet of her versatility, especially on this number that is best described as a cross between Lisa Ekdahl and Stars.

SOUTH AFRICA: Musical Mover & Shaker!
Ameen Harron – Techicoloured Oblivion
Ameen Harron is a force to be reckoned with in the South African music scene. He is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, and one of the country’s up-and-coming producers, who has worked with a range of the best local musicians, garnering national and international attention. Technicoloured Oblivion shows not only his skills as a producer but as an artist. He has strong ties to hip hop, which is evident as his combination of hip hop, punk and electro creates his own distinctive sound. The song has an almost soulful feel to it and wouldn’t be out of place on the international charts. Ameen Harron is set to take over. Watch out.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
Julia Hart – Korean Girl’s Winter
Always delightful guitar-pop act Julia Hart decided it had been too many years since the release of their last album in 2007 and consequently released a digital single with a couple of new songs for people to hear last month. One of them, Korean Girl’s Winter, shows Julia Hart at their loveliest and is a perfect indie-pop piece well suited for repeated play hours on end.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
Leaving Mornington Crescent – Seventeen
From the sound of Seventeen, Leaving Mornington Crescent have ventured into new territory. Unlike the sunny 60s-inspired indie-pop of April Song from their Cloudberry split CD, Seventeen is a rather heavy, shoegaze number with buzzing and churning guitars and a solid backbeat. Still the vocals retain the cheeriness of April Song with a chorus of “I’m seventeen on the inside, the only difference is…”.

TURKEY: Reset!
Kim Ki O – Serbest Kalp Dusmesi
Kim Ki O’s songs are self-written, self-played and self-sung in the name of self-pleasure and self-impulsion. Kim Ki O, which is the Turkish expression for “who is that anyway?”, is a name chosen for its phonetic beauty. The duo like to play with synthesizers and drum machines but do not to use computers in their music, preferring to create all the action live with enthusiasm and tension. The two members of the gang are former high school buddies who had been out of touch for years. Now they are back, clasped together, making great things.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I’m Floating
That Ghost – The Red Bow
That Ghost is the musical moniker of one crazy kid from the coast of California. Ryan Schmale, a youthful 19-year-old, creates lo-fi pop that evokes the warmth of bedroom recordings. He has a new EP on the way titled Get It And Get Out that IGIF will certainly be writing more about in the near future.

VENEZUELA: Deaf Indie Elephants
Ulises Hadjis – Lunes
The warm voice of Ulises Hadjis and his guitar are suddenly interrupted by a theremin, a trumpet from a gypsy story and a dialogue between Star Trek’s Captain Kirk and Zulu. These are some of the big surprises you’ll find in his debut album, Presente, which without doubt was one of the best debuts of 2008. His original indie-pop contains lyrics as melancholic as Bon Iver’s or Elliott Smith’s and a musical diversity that in its best moments resembles Beirut or Neutral Milk Hotel. On a Sunday morning this album will be your best company.

Single berikutnya dari Melancholic Bitch dimana kali ini berkolaborasi dengan vokalis perempuan bernama Silir, yang tampaknya jago nyinden. Diawali dengan irama yang lebih bernuansa balada, dan tiba-tiba dilanjutkan dengan bebunyian a’la disko pantura, dan ditutup dengan pengulangan lirik

Band pop-electronic asal Semarang ini memiliki musik yang sederhana namun kaya, dengan mengambil referensi multi genre, baik dari Indie-pop, Indie-rock, dan ambient-ambient a’la band-band dream-pop.

Tidak mudah mendeskripsikan musik mereka, karena kadang membuat saya teringat pada Placebo, sementara di menit kesekian terasa pengaruh Pet Shop Boys, New Order sampai Depeche Mode.

Saya merasa bahwa band ini memiliki masa depan musikal yang cerah (yang tidak selalu berbanding lurus dengan ketenaran) jika mereka terus membentuk karakter Lipstik Lipsing, dan mungkin suatu hari nanti, vokalis mereka akan lebih percaya diri dalam bernyanyi.

Band ‘grunge’ yang muncul ke permukaan kebanyakan bermodalkan suara bariton, yang ingin seperti Eddie Vedder, dan berakhir menjadi kw2 three doors down atau yang sedikit beruntung bisa lah dikit-dikit memiripkan suara dengan Chad Kroeger. Dan hal ini menyebabkan banyak sekali event grunge yang malah terdengar seperti kontes mirip vokal Eddie.

Namun untungnya, diantara sekian banyak bariton-bariton palsu dan aransemen yang tidak jauh beda dari karya Ian Kasela, masih ada Suckme, yang dengan sederhana memainkan kebisingan distorsi, yang menunjukan jelas mereka mengenal Foo Fighter dari album pertama. Dan terinspirasi sekali dengan bootleg-bootleg Nirvana, dan saya yakin mereka mendengarkan “From the Muddy Banks of the Whishkah”. Karena terasa sekali terutama dari cara mereka memainkan kebisingan pop dicampur dengan keagresifan distorsi yang tidak mudah dicerna yang kemudian memunculkan emosi-emosi implosif melalui teriakan-teriakan nya.

Metalgunz adalah band rock asal Singapura dengan konsep campur-campur mulai dari gaya bernyanyi Axl Rose, tiba-tiba menjadi thrashing a’la Metallica dan mendadak menjadi lagu balada seperti Scorpions.

Saya seperti membeli sebuah album nostalgia the best of malayan glam-rock 80′an dibandingkan sebuah band dengan nama sesangar MetalGunz yang seakan-akan memberikan distorsi dan ketukan drum sekencang mungkin dan bertubi-tubi, dibandingkan band melankolia yang memasang gambar mawar di kover nya. Saya tentu saja akan membeli band bernama S.E.A.R.C.H. yang vokalisnya bernama Amy itu jika memang mencari GnR wannabe dan lagu lagu balada bercengkok melayu, bukan band dengan foto personel menggunakan kaos bergambar White Zombie, karena jika demikian saya ingin musiknya menjadi lebih sangar ar ar ar.

Well, actually i want to write this review in English, but i fail.

Tidak jelas mengapa Rock n Roll is Dead bagi mereka, mungkin karena sudah lama tidak mendengar rock n roll, atau hanya untuk sensasi. Matilda is an electro-pop duo based in Rosario (one of Argentina’s largest cities), consisting of Juan Manuel Godoy and Ignacio Espumado. Vanidad is the opening track from Para Ser Movimiento, their second album, which was recently praised by Mexican pop star Julieta Venegas on her Twitter page. It was released by the Planeta X label in a physical format and as a free Creative Commons licensed download (bit.ly/kNiJK).

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Deep Sea Arcade – Don’t Be Sorry
One of the more exciting new bands to come out of Sydney in the past couple of years, Deep Sea Arcade is blessed with a very captivating frontman in Nic McKenzie, who genuinely loses himself in every song they play. Don’t Be Sorry is the single they’re currently touring but the live shows indicate there’s a lot more to come from this Sydney five piece. One to put on your watchlist.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Cidadão Instigado – Doido
Acclaimed by critics, Cidadão Instigado’s third album UHUUU! is probably one of the three best Brazilian records of 2009. Their sound is a mixture of vintage ‘brega’, 70s rock and avant garde. The band is one of the most creative of the contemporary music made in the country and (besides its experimental and complex songs) has a growing fanbase. Doido, which means “crazy”, is a bit reminiscent of John Frusciante’s solo work with lyrics about paranoid hallucinations.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
Dan Mangan – Robots
Robots isn’t a complex song, but it more than makes up for that by being insanely, incredibly catchy. I’d challenge people to hear it and not walk around with the closing chorus (“Robots need love too / They want to be loved by you”) in their head for days afterward… except I’m pretty sure it can’t be done.

CHILE: Super 45
Picnic Kibun – Drop Your Panties
If we could define Picnic Kibun in just one word, it would be “party”. A party in which a crazy Japanese sings about women getting rid of their underwear, where a couple of electronic musicians start rapping out of the blue and where a bass player with a surfer look makes rock songs. Fiebre Tagadá is the name of their first album and, just like the band, it’s a wild party in which you can dance and get drunk.

CHINA: Wooozy
Tang Qie Nong – I Want To Go Through Your Body
In the summer of 2008, the experimental duo Tang Qie Nong was founded by Fangqi and Tangguo in Guangzhou. The single I Want To Go Through Your Body from their self-titled EP is about the long-cherished ambition of a person who faces death. He wants to go back to the origins and purity, but you must be careful what you wish for.

COLUMBIA: Columbia Urbana
Jhonblack – Sola Solita
Hailing from Pereira, Jhonblack is seducing women with his sexy music. His offer is based in electric sounds mixed with hip hop, R’n'B and pop music without forgetting his Pacific roots, to which he is adding a little bit of jazz and soul to create fresh and innovative sounds. Sola Solita is one of his most melodic songs and shows why he is known as one of the greatest urban music artists in Colombia.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
Slaraffenland – That Great Love Sound (The Raveonettes cover)
This year, legendary Danish label Crunchy Frog – the first home of The Raveonettes among others – celebrate their 15th anniversary. To commemorate the landmark they asked 25 Danish non-Crunchy artists to interpret 25 songs by Crunchy artists and released the results on the double album Saluting The Crunchy Frog-a-logue. Here’s Slaraffenland’s excellent cover of The Raveonettes’ That Great Love Sound.

ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
Beth Jeans Houghton – Golden
Beth Jeans Houghton is a glam folk pixie who injects her sweet acoustic songs with a high-grade dose of pure pop. She has killer tunes, energy, a curious taste in wigs and a certain boldness that’s only natural given her Newcastle roots. She rules. She has a new EP coming out this month where “all of of the songs are about a guy who looks like Roger Daltrey circa the deaf, dumb and blind kid days. Apart from I Will Return, which is about Wilson the football floating away from Tom Hanks in Castaway”. Golden isn’t from that EP but it’s still great.

FINLAND: Glue
Keramick & Lobo – Brown-Eyed Susan
Producers Jussi Mikkonen and Visa Mäkinen, aka Keramick & Lobo, combine their downbeat electronic layers with a wide array of musicians for a perfect blend of machines and real instruments on their new album The Braille. Nineteen artists, including singers Eeppi Ursin and Teemu Tanner, participate on the duo’s compositions and provide a smooth jazz beat with violins, trumpet, saxophone, percussion and a few other instruments. Brown-Eyed Susan is a dark and intriguing track, a real film noir piece of music.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Caravan Palace – La Caravane
Three sequence programmers – Charles Delaporte, Arnaud Via and Hugues Payen – with a love of electronic music and swing jazz, together with Toustou, Zoé and Chapi make one hell of a band. They will soon be heard at the famous Paris Olympia – proof that Caravan Palace are becoming rather popular.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Me Succeeds – My Main Discipline
This Hamburg-based trio is quite Janus-esque since they combine gentle melodies and preppy non-parallel vocals with a highly energetic synth-bass. That might sounds like normal indie-electro but both pillars stand on their own to create a quite unique sound.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
Diafana Krina – Agnos
Diafana Krina is possibly the most brilliant and idiosyncratic band to emerge from Greece in the early 90s. Agnos is taken from Ki Agapi Pali Tha Kalei, an incandescent guitar-oriented album with superb, dark, poetic and heart-bruising lyrics. Long, swelling arrangements are organized cosily around Thanos Anestopoulos’ weathered baritone with blankets of keyboard and jarring bursts of exploding drums. Each song blends pure emotion and is expertly crafted, with an amazingly punchy set of melodies delivered by an extremely tight band. Unfortunately, after six records, Diafana Krina disbanded in June 2009.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Reykjavík! – Æji, Plís
Reykjavík! is a raw rock band in which most members originate not from Reykjavík but Ísafjörður, the capital of the Westfjords. This is one of the loudest Icelandic bands, a collective of philosophy majors, shopmongers and social workers, with an exclamation mark partly as a reference to the vast amount of hyperbole Iceland’s capital receives. Æji, Plís is taken from their second album, The Blood. The song features a surf-rock guitar riff, rhythmic bass, kick-drum percussion and Bóas’ vocals fluctuating between grunting, chanting and falsetto.

INDIA: Indiecision
Swarathma – Jamba
Swarathma plays honest, unpretentious folk-rock. This hardworking act from Bangalore was recently given the chance to record with renowned British producer John Leckie (The Stone Roses, Radiohead) and play a mini-tour of the UK. Jamba (meaning “pride”) comes from a compilation album produced by Leckie featuring Swarathma and a few other top new Indian acts. Sung entirely in Kannada, the song, like the band, finds its roots in Carnatic music and combines these sensibilities with orchestral pop trappings to create something that’s more a new direction than a middle path.

INDONESIA: Deathrockstar
Koil – Aku Lupa Aku Luka
Koil are one of the greatest rock bands in Indonesia, their songs and style influenced by the industrial/darkwave/gothic/metal scene, with lyrics that tell stories about spiritual journeys, nationalism or just personal things which are easy to relate to yet have a deeper meaning.

IRELAND: Nialler9
Nakatomi Towers – Cut Me Out
This is the first real tune from Belfast-based boy/girl duo Nakatomi Towers and what a cool beast of electro-pop it turns out to be. From the “duh-duh-duh” nonsensical yet catchy chorus to the insistent disco bassline, this is promising stuff for all 2 minutes 47 seconds of its duration.

ITALY: Polaroid
Giardini di Mirò – La Vampa 02
Giardini di Mirò is the one of the most important bands in the Italian indie scene. Formed in 1998, notable acts they have toured with include Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Karate, and they have been remixed by Styrofoam and Dntel among others. Their new album is an amazing soundtrack for Il Fuoco, a silent movie from 1915 directed by Giovanni Pastrone. La Vampa 02 (“The Fire”) is the second part of the central chapter, when the two lovers surrender to passion and their love burns away.

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
nhhmbase – 9/8
The latest offering from the Tokyo underground scene is nhhmbase (pronounced “ne-han base”). Formed in 2004, they have complex music frameworks with irregular beats and dramatic code which makes their sound innovative and pop. They have already opened for many foreign acts such as Deerhoof, Tyondai Braxton (Battles) and The Eternals in Japan.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa
Menuda Coincidencia – Sin Enganche
Hailing from Monterrey, Menuda Coincidencia is a ‘rap en Español’ trio that made feature appearances on records from some of the genre’s top figures – such as Bocafloja and Akil Ammar – before a long overdue but excellent debut EP, Ai Con Permisito. Lead single Sin Enganche is full of crazy and juicy, jumpy jazz hooks with playful swing samples that sustain an existentialist manifesto, ambiguous yet intelligently expressed by its two MCs.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
Jordan Reyne – The Proximity Of Death (Blue Eyed Boy)
The Proximity Of Death is taken from Jordan Reyne’s fifth album How The Dead Live. A musician who has combined folk, electronica, soundscapes and industrial, Reyne has gained a strong following in the darkwave scene. How The Dead Live is her most contemplative work. The album was commissioned by the New Zealand Department of Conservation and was written in an artist in residence programme. The album fictionalises the life of an actual pioneer woman Susannah Hawes adding history as a character. Reyne has announced this will be her last album.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Sirkus Bjøver – Heavy Metal
The song is called Heavy Metal, but it’s as far away from heavy and metal as you can get. This is nice, happy and friendly pop music with a big heart. The members of the duo, Vegard Markhus and Bjørnar Sangolt, grew up as neighbours in a forest in western Norway. They held regular circus shows for their families as kids and called their performances “Sirkus Bjøver”. Now, 15 years later, the two have become neighbours in Bergen, and the old circus is revitalized as a band.

PERU: SoTB
Plug-Plug – Tambores
The sound of Plug-Plug falls outside any conventional tag. Some people call them garage, others hardcore – the truth is that when you hear any description it is never enough. Plug-Plug makes acid songs which sometimes sound melancholic, but this band from Lima is more than a style, they’re a mixture of sensations.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Iconoclasts – Anything Will Do
Iconoclasts are a six-piece from Lisbon with Diogo and Pipa singing and screaming (not at the same time), Pedro doing freaky dances while playing bass, Ricardo hammering away on the drums like his life depends on it, Vitor playing guitar while pounding on every effects pedal imaginable, and Sérgio doing the same with every annoying thing he lays his hands on. ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
Sunday People – Win Your Face Back
The story of this particular band is not what you might call ordinary. It all started in the bedroom of very young Abu Dhabi-born brothers Sultan and Hasan. As they grew older, the bedroom became a recording studio where their dreams, influences and ideas were born. Two actors/musicians joined them later – Cristi Rigman (drums) and Ana Ularu (vocals) – and they found their sound: a mixture of riot, love and intensity.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
The Xcerts – Crisis In The Slow Lane
The Xcerts are the real deal – a rock band who come fully formed with an album of songs to believe in and a pop sensibility that will, at the very least, have you air-drumming to their choruses. Crisis In The Slow Lane perfectly sums up what they and their debut album In The Cold Wind We Smile are all about – every dial is set to ‘epic’ as it gradually builds to a soaring conclusion. If you’re a fan of Biffy Clyro, or good music in general, you’ll love The Xcerts.

SINGAPORE: I’m Waking Up To…
MUON – Cylons Dream Of Electric Sheep
Can cold, heartless, surgical machines ever have souls? Well, experimental dark electronica group MUON thinks they can. If the computer is dreaming inside, it dreams in ones and zeros, harsh squelches and inane beeps, each a little exegesis looking for proof of life. MUON have put together a creepy Frankenstein of deeply resonating drum loops, bleating sheep and what could pass as the theme from the Zelda videogame.

SOUTH AFRICA: Musical Mover & Shaker!
Jax Panik – Talking To Myself
A crazy, outrageous mix of electro-pop and a dash of rock ‘n’ roll is what Jax Panik’s music is all about. He started out as an ‘online only’ artist but the success generated from his activity soon led to a full-length album release. The album was named Cigarettes And Cinnamon from which Talking To Myself is taken. The song artfully showcases Jax’s winning formula which consists of catchy beats, meticulous production and lyrics that reveal a slightly dark edge upon closer listen. With a new album out in March, Jax Panik is set to become an even bigger hit, both locally and abroad.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
Plastic People – B/W Picture
Folk-rock duo Plastic People has been around for many years, all the while successfully trying out various musical directions. On their most recent album Snap, released in July, the selection of songs is more diverse than ever with modern folk, some rock tracks, a bit of psyche-pop and C86-inspired twee. Choosing just one song when they’re all amazing in their own way proved a difficult task, but it had to be done so here’s the captivating slow-paced rock piece B/W Picture that inspired the snap-shot theme of the album.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
Vikta Fåglar – Walk Along
Vikta Fåglar literally means “folded bird” in English. Loosely, I think it translates into the term origami. Musically, the band combines elements of the Swedish folk tradition with some classical and even experimental noise – such as when the cymbals come crashing in towards the end of Walk Along.

TURKEY: Reset!
Solardip – Paralyze Me
Solardip is an electro-indie three-piece formed in Istanbul. After a couple of years successfully performing on the local scene, the band has just released their first EP, Dip Inside, and are about to make a big comeback with their new sound and concept. Solardip, often compared to The Presets, offers laser-like synths, danceable tunes and arousing vocals.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I’m Floating
Holiday Shores – Phones Don’t Feud
Holiday Shores, Twosyllable Records’ latest discovery, continue to diversify the label’s output by creating equally messy and melodic indie rock that’s about as addictive as anything else of the same vein coming out this year. Their new album Columbus’d The Whim is available for consumption – sink your teeth in before the hipsters do.

VENEZUELA: Barquisimeto Musical
Nana Cadavieco – No Hay
Nana Cadavieco is a young Venezuelan singer full of energy and hype, which she reflects in each and every one of her performances. Exposé, her latest record, is undeniably influenced by rock, pop, indie and disco-punk and a few world music and electronic elements. Nana says of the song, No Hay: “It portrays a human reality, very close to Latin America. The message I want to send with it is the process I went through with my new CD. After all, I still smile, albeit with a little sarcasm.”

Proyek ini sebenarnya sudah direncanakan sejak setahun lalu, saat saya menemukan banyak sekali singer-song writer perempuan di Myspace dengan lagu-lagu yang bagus, dan yang membuat saya semakin bersemangat adalah saat mengetahui sebagian besar dari mereka menggunakan alat perekam seadanya, bahkan beberapa diantaranya menggunakan fasilitas perekam di telepon genggam.

Panda Beach
Berbekal gitar akustik yang dibeli di toko buku gramedia, telepon genggam ia merekam lagu-lagunya di kamar, dengan inspirasi gambar-gambar panda dan pantai ia menuliskan lagu-lagu bertema personal dan merekamnya dengan peralatan yang begitu sederhana, namun menghasilkan sesuatu yang terasa jujur dan dalam.

Frau
Bersama piano bernama Oskar, Leilani Hermiasih Suyenaga menuliskan lagu-lagu yang tampaknya terpengaruh film-film Walt Disney, Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple dan mungkin Sarah Mclachlan, namun tetap dengan karakter Frau yang cukup kuat, terutama karena suara vokalnya yang berkarakter. Kabarnya lagu-lagu Frau akan dirilis oleh Lil’Fish Records.

Windyasari
Gitaris dari band rock n roll ini menemukan bahwa blues scale dapat menyalurkan ekspresinya, dengan inspirasi dari Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, sampai Bob Dylan, ia merekam lagu-lagunya menggunakan kamera telepon genggam, dan mengupload nya di youtube. Dan saya benar-benar tertarik dengan cara bernyanyinya yang terasa dalam dan benar-benar blues tanpa harus terlalu memaksakan diri.

  Tika and the Dissidents - Clausmophobia (4.1 MiB, 2,900 hits)

Namun… setelah beberapa saat tidak menghadiri penampilan live penyanyi bersuara tebal ini, saya menemukan bahwa ia memberikan nama untuk band pengiring nya, yaitu The Dissidents, atau sekumpulan orang yang berbeda pendapat, dan pemikiran saya lansung berubah saat melihat bahwa kali ini ia mereka bereksplorasi memasukkan unsur swing, jazz, dan penampilan mereka di sebuah bar kecil penuh sesak itu cukup memukau, dari situ tanpa berfikir panjang saya memesan satu buah paket CD, dengan packaging hasil prakarya penuh cinta yang diberi harga cukup murah.

Dan ide untuk memberikan ruang bagi band pengiring bersumbangsih pada aransemen tiap lagu, menurut saya berhasil menciptakan aransemen-aransemen lagu yang tidak tertebak, tidak biasa dan menarik. Sehingga tidak akan mengherankan jika suatu waktu mereka sudah diundang tur berkeliling dunia lain, karena apa yang dibuat oleh band ini baik di rekaman maupun penampilan live, sudah memiliki kapasitas untuk itu. Bagaimana menurut kamu?

oh iya, btw lagu duet nya dengan Anda bagus.

Duo noise-dub-pop asal Denmark ini akan merilis album pada bulan Oktober nanti, namun hype nya sudah dimulai dari bulan Juni lalu, dimana rekaman demo mereka mulai tersebar, dan bocoran lagu “Suicide” yang bisa dibilang sangat ‘manis’ untuk sebuah lagu tentang bunuh diri. Dan sekarang ada satu lagi lagu yang dibocorkan berjudul “The Last Dance”. Jika didengar dari lagu-lagu yang sudah dibocorkan, aransemennya terdengar lebih cerah, namun tema-tema yang diangkat tetap suram, Kalau kata nya sih album “In And Out Of Control” ini menggabungkan kekasaran noir-garage rock sounds diawal karir mereka dengan kegelapan dari “lust lust lust” yang rilis 2008 lalu.

Jelas sekali pengaruh Radiohead, Muse, U2 dan kemungkinan band-band progresif rock dan make-up-rock dari Jepang… dan teori saya tentang band-band yang berusaha menunjukkan pengaruh Radiohead, Muse maupun U2, apalagi band-band hair-rock-bermake-up dari Jepang biasanya menghasilkan lagu dengan suara bindeng, nasal, dengan pitch dan gaya malas-malasan, ditambah emosi-emosi artifisial. Yang menyebabkan depresi tanpa alasan dimana kemudian mendorong syaraf motorik untuk menekan tombol stop.

Untungnya band ini, termasuk yang memiliki daya juang tinggi, terbukti dari jumlah pendownload single mereka yang cukup lumayan, memperlihatkan usaha keras mereka untuk bisa didengar pencinta musik. Dan saya salut untuk itu.

Dan saya masih bisa memuji-muji mereka sampai tiga belas paragraph lagi, tetapi album ini tetap tidak bisa memuaskan rasa keinginan saya untuk menghentikan memutarnya, dan saya cukup kagum dengan dengan ketahanan saya memutarnya bolak-balik sampai dua kali untuk mendengarkan lagu-lagu yang terpengaruh Radiohead, U2, Muse, dan mungkin One Republic dan ‘you name it yourself’ lah.

Mungkin itu sebabnya, walaupun menggunakan aransemen catchy, menarik dan bisa membuat para juri award-award an menominasikan mereka sebagai band alternatif terbaik, seperti Nickelback mendapat nominasi grammy. Tetapi Dzeek tidak memberikan sesuatu yang lebih daripada sekedar lulusan akademi bernyanyi Thom Yorke, yang pandai memainkan alat musik dan mengenal engineer audio yang baik.

Namun begitu saya sadari sepenuhnya bahwa mungkin ini terlalu subjektif, karena saya masih tidak bisa mengerti kenapa dari belasan lagu, saya sudah mulai menderita di lagu kedua, kecuali memang mereka membuat album ini menjadi tema depresi, sedepresi model kover mereka yang menuliskan “dzeek” dijidatnya.

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Baby Scream – Ups And Downs
Baby Scream is a musical project led by Juan Mazzola, with the ocassional collaboration of friends such as Cristian Basualdo, Sebastián Rubin and even Gilby Clarke’s bassist Muddy Stardust. Mazzola writes pop songs with a strong influence from classics like The Byrds, The Beatles and The Replacements. This beautiful acoustic ballad was taken from the album with the same name, released last year in the US by Recording Records.

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
The Frowning Clouds – Time Wastin’ Woman
Geelong boys The Frowning Clouds are so 60s and very fun. Lead vocalist Nick (a dead ringer for George Harrison) and his poncho-wielding counterpart Zack rotate between singing and rhythm guitar duties. The coarse vocals of Zack lend backbone to Time Wastin’ Woman, oozing with the sounds of the Stones’ early catalogue.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Copacabana Club – Just Do It
They’re pretty, uber-cool and hyped. Justin Timberlake likes them. Channel Fox uses their song in a commercial. Do you want more or is that enough to make you see that Copacabana Club are a band to pay attention to? Last year the five-piece band (two women and three men) released their first EP, King Of The Night, from which Just Do It is taken. It’s dance and kinda new-rave style make people think about CSS, but it’s better to listen and judge for yourself.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
Centretown Cripplers – Eat The Bee
Centretown Cripplers are a seven-piece. I only mention this because they’re a garage rock band, and bands in that genre typically have a much more minimalistic approach to line-ups. As Eat The Bee shows, however, in this case size doesn’t matter. Centretown Cripplers are loud, raucous, primal… and awesome.

CHILE: Super 45
Mostro – Moha Moha
Mostro, one of the cornerstones of the Chilean indie music scene, are Carlos and Jaime Reinoso, two mutant brothers who deliver an intense and creative musical experience. Playing, in their own words, “evil pop” with a guitar, drum and small keyboard, they attack you (yes, literally attack you) with a mix of minimal electronica and raw, intense rock that simply knocks you down, just like American duo High Places were when both bands recently shared a stage. Moha Moha, taken from their second LP Consumido Por Pájaros (“Eaten By Birds”) is a small appetizer of their genius insanity while we await their third album.

CHINA: Wooozy
Sonnet – A Nice Song
Sonnet are a disco/indie rock band from Shanghai. As one of the few third rock generation in Shanghai, they’ve just independently released their second demo S-File. One of the band members is now helping the SOMA indie label host live shows at the Dream Factory venue in their native city.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
Jong Pang – Liar Liar
Jong Pang aka Anders Rhedin released his lauded debut solo album Bright White Light just last year and already he’s got the follow-up ready and out. It’s titled Love and it is a magnificent alternative pop-rock effort from which I’m happy to present irresistible first single Liar Liar.

ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
The xx – Crystalised
Although they went to the same school as Four Tet and Burial, don’t go making too many assumptions about The xx, a group of four teenagers from South London currently making waves in the UK ahead of the release of their debut album later this month. They may share similar influences (dub, R’n'B) but they take their songs in another direction with magnificently minimal production, all of which is done by themselves.

FINLAND: Glue
Astrid Swan – Unrelated
Earlier this year singer Astrid Swan dumped the piano (and along with it, the dramatically adorned songs) and took the guitar to compose simple, but sincere and personal pop songs that she recorded with a new band, The Drunk Lovers, for her soon-to-be released third album Better Than Wages. There we can find this synth-pop gem about erroneous encounters.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Mama’s Mule – Globe Trotter
The Mule and Venom met during a studio session in 2007 and they immediatly clicked. For about a year, they kept seeing each other every now and then between concerts, studio sessions, taking the dog out, vacations and soccer games. Meanwhile, Jessy Rakotomanga and Sylvain Moreau pledged allegiance to the secret society. January 2009: tadaaaam. First demo. Three tracks. Viagra for your ears. Just listen.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Timid Tiger – Are You Gonna Go My Way (feat. Ludacris & The Notorious B.I.G.)
Perhaps Timid Tiger are globally more famous for their remixes than for their regular songs. And hell yeah, this Lenny Kravitz cover does indeed kick ass. So enjoy it – but don’t forget that this band from Cologne is creative and inspired in their own work, both on record and live.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
Film – Filter
After a two-year period of experimentation in the studio, Film are releasing their third album. Persona is a dizzyingly beautiful set of delicate atmospheric songs with cinematic aesthetics and a detailed production. It signifies a different, more inviting musical direction that is influenced by the compositions of Vangelis Papathanasiou and summons lush combined voices, pop melodies, electronics, sparse strings and brasses. An album that is best taken from start to finish, where the songs will uncover its manifold delights, endear and impress.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Agent Fresco – Above These City Lights
Agent Fresco formed in early 2008 with the goal of competing in the Músíktilraunir contest, a sort of Battle of the Bands, which they subsequently won. The quartet write complex songs with lots of rhythm changes and received the Brightest Hope (Best Newcomer) Award at the 2008 Icelandic Music Awards. The band, who released a five-song EP called Lightbulb Universe last December, are currently working on their debut album.

INDIA: Indiecision
Sridhar/Thayil – Bring Me Rain
The project of theatre actor and singer Suman Sridhar and poet Jeet Thayil, Sridhar/Thayil’s lyrical pop takes thematic Indian music sensibilities and combines them with an urban swagger in the vein of early Björk and, occasionally, Tom Waits. Bring Me Rain is a perfect example of their dirty-sexy feel, taking traditional Indian sounds and cooking up something that could work equally well at a nu-jazz club or a grimy bar. Sridhar/Thayil have been around since 2007 and they’re currently working on releasing their debut album.

INDONESIA: Deathrockstar
The Wispy Hummers – My Love
The Wispy Hummers is a singer-songwriter who is much influenced by The Zombies, Bright Eyes, Destroyer, Death Cab For Cutie and, above all, Bob Dylan. She has released two EPs, both recorded at home, creating a signature lo-fi quality that makes the songs more honest, heartfelt and nostalgic.
