Bizarre phone conversation of the day
Posted by 3 years, 9 months ago
Her: "Ow, my vagina muscles are cramping. Has that ever happened to you?"
Me: "Er no, I don't have a vagina."
True story, I swear. Just happened a few hours ago, and no, I have no idea of what made my friend want to share that particular tidbit of information.
Oh, and I already have a long-running (well almost a year old) blog somewhere else, so to be honest I just wrote the above to fill space here. I could be even more lazy and just copy everything I write on my primary blog, but that wouldn't be much fun. So I'll have to think of how I can give each its own purpose, which will hopefully be apparent in each subsequent post. Watch this space. Read Full Post..

Let’s Bottle Bohemia

This is a bit of an oldie which I bought a month ago, but has recently got a bit more rotation on my CD changer. Witness the power of MTV: the video for Not For All The Love In The World has been receiving some decent airplay. It's a lovely video, with the band playing in front of a backdrop of lights and basically just looking cool. The video's made me pay more attention to the song, and in turn, I've ended up making a ringtone of the signature guitar lick on the intro and outro. Of course, to make the ringtone sound as close as possible, one must give the original source a few spins to get it right.
Which leads to me giving the CD more listens as of late. Let's Bottle Bohemia has come out only a year after debut album So Much For The City. They toured relentlessly during that year, which accounts for the tougher, tighter sound on their new LP. This time around, there are no stand-out pop hits like Santa Cruz (You're Not That Far), Big Sur or Don't Steal Our Sun (save, perhaps, for... Read Full Post..
The Incredibles

Plot: Mr. Incredible, protector of Metroville, is reluctantly forced by the city council into retirement, a mundane insurance job and a life in the suburbs with his equally superpowered wife and three kids. The normal life doesn't sit well with him, and he exercises his longing to get back in the saddle by performing low-key superheroics. Eventually a mysterious benefactor offers him a chance to slip back into spandex, but things aren't as they seem...
Commentary: It's a Pixar movie. Considering their track record (Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo), that should be all you need to know. It's a guarantee that you'll not only get mind-blowing CGI animation, you'll also get a great story that's heartwarming, entertaining and hilarious, without having to resort to cheap pop culture parodies and A-list celebrity voices (yes, I'm referring to you, Shrek and Shark Tale; Samuel L. Jackson is the only one who can be considered A-list in The Incredibles).
For me personally, I dig super... Read Full Post..
Senyawa

I just stayed up writing about this for next month's issue of djakarta!, so I might as well write it down again since it's still fresh in my head. The basic concept of the album is "old guy collaborates with young brats". Kinda like the last two Santana albums, but Chrisye doesn't play guitar, so he's left to sing with acts such as Project Pop, Peterpan, Ungu, Element and Naif. Sounds intriguing, but the actual execution leaves much to be desired, and Chrisye ends up like a guest star on his own album - which wouldn't be as big a problem if he were given strong material, but unfortunately it's mostly sludgy pop rock ballads.
And here's something interesting: the record company of this album (Musica Studios) have been forced to pull the albums from the shelves due to another label (Sony Music Indonesia) objecting to the placement of two of their artists' names (Eross and Tohpati) on the cover art, citing breach of contract (what that contract is exactly, I have no idea). I found this... Read Full Post..

...my guilt over neglecting this page has finally caught up with me, so I thought I might as well provide some content, namely by posting whatever random thought has been occupying my mind.
Here is that random thought:
Ever feel like you've missed the bus? 'Cos that's how I'm feeling. And it's not just that - I also feel like I've realised I've missed it and am trying to get on nonetheless, giving the evil eye to other would-be passengers. And yet...I also have the feeling that I'm not welcome on the bus, like the bus doesn't want me on board and keeps accelerating everytime I'm within reach.
So what is it about this bus, and why do I have to get on this particular one, even though I don't even know where it's going to take me if I get on? Well that's the funny thing about feelings: you don't have to know, just feel. But on the other hand, there are few things I hate worse than being unwanted, and if that's the case with the bus, then I might as well stop chasing it. In the me... Read Full Post..
