Sore
Centralismo
Aksara Records, 2005
8.4
Centralismo is the debut album from Sore, a high-praised critically acclaimed band from Jakarta and got the title of Five Asian Albums Worth Buying from TIME Asia Magazine in Sep. 2005. But do they earn the title ?worth buying??
Speaking in the ?worth buying? sense, I am somewhat disappointed with the recent local records in the past year. Some albums are notable though, for it is actually worth buying, and Centralismo could be one of them. I got high enthusiasms for Sore since we got a copy of their samples a couple of months before their debut album, and I was hypothetically one of the first buyers, and got this CD for 45K rupiahs.
Ok, they don?t have a jewel-box case or a digipack case for the cd, it?s just a ridiculously stuffed folded carton paper, it?s even hard to slip off the CD and the thin booklet. But it has a tremendous collection of artwork there, with illustrations, notes and photographs of the colonial-era retrospects in Jakarta.
***
?Bebas? opens as the first track in the record, with some groovy drum patterns and mellow piano tunes, ?Bebas? brings us to a retro-feel and nostalgic sense of an era in the past and it goes on in the relaxing ?Mata Berdebu?, where they blend their music with some strings, a French horn, and a part of Eric Satie?s Gymnopedie I, and in ?Somos Libres? (which is Spanish for ?We Are Free?).
?No Fruits For Today? established their jazzy-side of the music, and is one of my favorite tracks in the record. Catchy phrases on the refrain (?I love you when you love me, and we?re gonna make a big family?), however, the ?Kuntilanak?-witch voice on the bridge is very, very annoying.
?Cermin? (which is included in the 2003?s JKT:SKRG compilation) actually ruins the graphic as the song in the next track, but it is slowly covered by ?Keangkuhanku? and the we step up on an another jazzy-tunes song (and another favorite track of mine), ?Etalase?, which started with a funky saxophone melody and ended with a nice orchestrated strings section, brings a romantic, mellow, yet enlightening mood.
?Ambang? helps to define main color of Sore?s music, and ?Ada Musik Di Dalam? makes you remember of being alone inside when the rains pour outside.
Sore?s exploration of the 70?s Indonesian pop, beatles-influenced-music in bands like Koes Plus is shown ?Lihat? with a contemporary interpretation and a jazzy blend. While ?She?s So Beautiful?, which is a collaboration between the band itself and The Miskins, produces an upbeat and high-spirited pop-rock song. ?Aku? ends the record and makes a farewell in a solitary mood.
***
In the end, I found it very hard to define Sore?s music, since in any way, I?ve never heard anything like it, it?s experimental and avant-garde, along side with the melodies of retro pop and and jazzy mood. Calling them avant-garde neocolonial postrock jazz, may sound ridiculously cheesy, but I think it is fair enough.
Despite of their flaws for live performance, this album is actually flawless in production; the compositions and arrangement of the songs are wonderful, with nice quality details here and there.
This album won?t create a gimmick trend for local juveniles, but it is always be notable from time to time. And hell yeah it actually worth my ass-sweating-45K-money-spent-in-an-album for such a long time.

The fact that the album’s produced by an Indie label and got praised by TIME magazine, is definitely a kick in the mouth for the big record companies. They should buy themself an ear bud for not recognizing Sore’s music!

Sore is a retro-jazzy band from Indonesia, their music is very unique to describe…
somewhat between Mocca (or Naif) and prog-rockers like Discus…but with strong psychedelic sound

DISTRIBUSI ANJAS!
major hype – from reputable sources – bought it – listen to it once – not even intrigued by any note in any song – too much foot in the past – why cant someone get excited about today and tomorrow? – believe that the whole getinyourcomfyzoneofrevisitingorrelivingthepast movement has gotten too far -feel the effort of making it ciri n greget – didnt work for me – sorry – somewhere between vaguely interesting and just flat out boring – I’ll give the CD to the 1st person I think could appreciate it better – or simply a big fan who has no access to miliki the CD – if that somebody cross my path – no regret for the 45 ribu though – just another experimentational failyer
givvitome then..
Give me reasons why I should.. :-)
is it really that good? wokeh lah, besok beli!

Keren boiy!! Bahasanya berkualitas banget..
owh, it’s not that good. damn! this one album i’ll regret buying. and no hardcovers?? WTF?!
whhh..g bosen didengerin pa lagi ada unsur jazznya..g nyangka..
cakep dah, ribet, enak, kaya minum es teh manis abis naik metromini 72 siang bolong, panas, berdiri, pake jaket item, sebelahnya ngerokok, menyegarkan………..
Thank you for Sore Mangement in giving the honor by commenting on my 2 cents.
I guess the argument that musically everything has been explored is the oldest, if not lamest, used only by the laziest musician, which you guys seem not to be.
I heard that argument in the 80s, yet Napalm Death was very refreshing.
Again in the 90s, but hey this Bjork dude sounded out of this world.
Guess I’m just a sucker for a fresh thing ;-)
Kudo with you with the cool and today music being subjective.
It’s just, for me retro has the element of playing it safe, because in some way it’s been done. Experimenting, taking risk attitude just does it for me, beautifies it.
Nothing really wrong with nostalgic trip though, for some people :-)
I even see the irony that some of the sound that’s been revisited by today’s music was originally meant to be futuristic – mendahului jamanz :-)
And when that future comes, they just revisit the past, oh man :-)
And last but not least, you shouldn’t be apologetic for the music youre makin’
In fact there seem to be more people put there likin’ it.
That’s the whole meaning of makin music, to make more people happy.
Unless ur that art pour l’art guy ;-)
With that in mind, you can always dismiss a nobody like me :-)
And I don’t even dislike your music, just ain’t my thing.
I agree that one shouldn’t maki2 when they’re upset, but afterall they spend some money, so in a way it’s their “privilege” :-)
Thanx for the stimuli for this wacana ;-)
Let’s maybe just agree to disagree, and carry on with our own life…
Selamat Malam buat Sore…
ok then, brother..
Hehehe… seriousa katamsi amat :-)
Nanti gue coba denger lagi deh…
Seperti orang Indo lainnya, gue minta maap kalo ada nyang berasa gimana n jadi gak enak gitu ya karena ocehan gue, sekaligus nutup wacana meracau gue kali ini… :-)
I’ll continue my life with my kids, dayjob, night job, all week job as a father, karyawan n teman sana sini…
Nuhun nyak, God speed!
yah…. musik pasti pengulangan deh, yang lama dibikin lebih baik menurut versi mereka dan mungkin saja pasar tentunya… gak semua orang suka kopi kan?Dan kalo ga suka apa artinya?Mau pake gula apa enggak atau berapa banyak gulanyakan tergantung masing masing… iya gak
Bermimpi apakah saya tadi malam……?
Ataukah alam smesta berkonspirasi memutarbalikkan waktu…..
Coba aing lahir tahun 50-an, trus rada aristrokrat, pasti urang bisa ngadengekeun lagu jiga SORE leuwih loba…..
Nyok ah…..
Mata Berdebu somehow reminds me of Beaumont’s Discotheque ala Carte, in slower version. My fave track is Cermin, it’s flawless albeit quite different from the other jazzy tracks. One of the best album in 2005.
Centralismo was so great Fren,, bahasa yang lo pake berat jg, tapi gw salut, lo bisa mengindahkan kembali bahasa indonesia,,harusnya Sore bisa jadi Million Copies Band daripada Radja, Peterpan, or whatever lah,,sayang media di Indonesia masih terlalu mengekspos band itu2 aja, jadi kuping masyarakat kurang terbiasa denger musik yang laen,,keep rock in jazz,,,,
eh2 buat sore’s management.. sore punya official website ga sih??? klo blom bikin donk. penting tuh. hehehe.
horreee…!!!!
akhirnya ada juga band dari SD Cilacap..!!!
mau nanya tentang gimana contact sore biar bisa menta tolong mereka manggung di sebuah acaranya…minta contact person-nya,,ya…makasih sore..
sore is de best!!!
