Trampauline

Trampauline_001

Meet Trampauline a Seoul based electro-pop with sweet dialects.

Please share us some story about the music scene in Seoul
music business wise, it is brutal. because of numerous almost-free download sites and all that, no one’s really getting any pies that they deserve. in indie scenes everyone’s doing their jobs and working pretty hard to get known without hurting their pride as an artist. music wise, lots of varieties and experiments are being tried. people are still enthusiastic to taste new misic and genre

Jonna Lee - Warm and cool pop music with nerves.

jonnalee_header
Meet Jonna Lee a Swedish pop sweetheart with beautiful voices, the album “10 Pieces, 10 Bruises” out last year, sounded like a mixtures of American folk with light Swedish indie pop. Here a brief question and answer with her.

how are you now ?
Good thanks, very busy recording my new record while playing shows and promoting my debut one. Me and two friends have just finished building a studio out of our rehearsal space in Stockholm, so that’s here I’m recording. It’s great! though it has somewhat of a weird smell that we’re working on removing.

if you have to describe your music in one sentences, what would that be ? One sentense?
Warm and cool pop music with nerves.

how is the music scene in your country?
The music scene in Sweden is very much alive and vivid right now. Lots of new bands pop up and people talk about a new Scandinavian sound. I’m not sure what this means though. Hard to be objective. We’re producing lots of great music at the moment though. Lovely!

top five songs on your playlist now?
Midlake - Young Bride (from Trials of Van Occupanther)
Ed Harcourt - Lachrymosity (myspace demo)
Leona Naess - Heavy like sunday (forthcoming album Thirteens)
Håkan Hellström - För en lång lång tid (from new record För send för edelweiss)
Travis - Big chair (from latest album The boy with no name)

what is the best record you bought in the last 6 months?
Radiohead’s “In Rainbows”.
I guess everyone knows Radiohead. I’m a proud owner of this record. It’s a complete record with a fantastic production (Nigel Godrich) and lovely melodies. They are one of our times greatest bands.

how’s the songwriting usually done?
The way I write songs? I have a golden lyric book that i fill with my thoughts and worries. I then sit by the piano, the drums or with my guitar and make music for these lyrics, that often were given a melody that I’ve kept in my head since i wrote them. Then I record this right away with my fiancé Claes Björklund. He’s the coolest producer, and my band. Or as soon as they’re availible…

You covered the Postal Service’s song, is that somekind of strategy? or you just simply like it?
Em oh you mean that one could gain publicity by covering an already made hit song and make it an acoustic, stripped down version? It’s very common these days indeed. Well, i have a week spot for Ben Gibbard. He’s somewhat my all time favorite songwriter. I just wanted to make my version of DC sleeps.. I have some very strange but loving memories to that song. When the postal service released it I was in a weird state and couldn’t stop listening to it. Then i Started playing it live to finally record it in my kitchen. This was quite a while ago now though.

last words?
Well even though downloading is fun and all, I think you should buy my record. It’s really quite lovely.

Foxtail Somersault

foxtailsomersault Foxtail Somersault a San Fransisco based shoegaze band, with a sweet sounds and deep melody. This band recently release Fathom a beautiful e.p. And now they’re going to tell you about how they arrange the songs, and some small stuff. Meet Seiken from Foxtail Somersault.

i’m a kind of wondering, how did you get that name?
It’s an inside joke

tell me more about “motionland”, it is such a beautiful song.
On composing Motionland, I first created the bassline, then layered guitars around it, to build the feel. That’s how I typically compose, start with a riff, either bass or guitar, and layer and build around it.

Top 5 releases of 07:
Astral - Sleepwalker
Explosions in the sky - All of a Sudden I Miss
Everyone
Tearwave - Tearwave
The Voices - The Sound of Young America
A Place to Bury Strangers - A Place to BuryStrangers

Tell us more about your upcoming album
We’re still in the recording stages, we’ve done a couple of scratch tracks for a few songs, but I think we’re at the point where the scructure is all there, and we just have to lay them all down. The main difference between Fathom and our next release is composition, I wrote all of the music for Fathom, and for our next release, I only wrote A Love song Part II.

any good underated bands you found recently found that you think they should get more attention?
There are so many great bands in San Francisco, I would say all the bands listed in Coolwavessf.com

What’s the story behind the name ‘13 conversation’?
Boyd : not much, the story behind 13conversation name came when me and my 12 friends are talkin about my song, and they said that the songs was too sloppy and the others said that it’s easy to listen, and people will get the message. from what we’ve talk that night, i’ve decide to give a name 13conversation, it’s me and my 12 friends, equals 13 and we talkin about what we thing, so it’s really-really free to talk, good, bad, hard feeling, soft, or anything…i make 13conversation name just to let people know that it’s dificult to make 13 people have the same feeling, but if we can open ourself, respect and let other people talk what they think, its a great honor and feeling. Geez…i talk to much… actually, the story behind 13conversation name is “The Art Of Difference”, hope for the difference that people thing about 13conversation will make 13conversation have more hope to make a great propagation in our music.

Apa kabarnya nih?
A: Lagi sedikit flu, karena cuaca yang hujan terus!
N: Lumayan kena penyakit cuaca aneh, kepala sakit uy.
R: Boke!
W: Gua baru aja beli ikan piaraan, jadi lagi seneng hehe…baru pertama kali punya piaraan pribadi, ga penting ya? hehe..
JAFM: Yang jelas kita semua lagi disibukan persiapan tur kedua sama ngumpulin materi untuk album kedua, kali ini full album.

Ceritain dikit tentang scene rock n roll di kota kamu?
Ehm, bagus…mulai mengarah menjadi pop culture, sih. Banyak band Garage Rock yang bagus, cuma kadang pergerakannya masih masing-masing per individu band, kayanya perlu ada dibentuk paguyubannya, wuahahaha…

Dalam bahasa kamu sendiri bagaimana kamu mendeskripsikan musik Jack and Four Men?
A: The Beatles + Ramones + Oasis + The Libertines + The White Stripes + The Strokes, jadi perpaduan lama dan baru dari Inggris dan Amerika.
W: Tapi kalo didengerin sih lagunya cenderung nada-nada ceria, cathcy, sedikit kasar aransemennya walaupun isinya banyak yang frustasi liriknya. Ada unsur, rock ‘n’ roll, garage rock, blues, country bahkan klasik. Yang klasik ada di lagu “Tone No. 1″

ada cerita apa dibalik nama Jack and Four Men?
Awalnya Jack dulu gitaris kita dan empat temannya yang ngebentuk band ini tapi kontrak mereka udah abis, jadi kita sekarang yang nerusin, hehehe…

Lagi dengerin album apa aja akhir-akhir ini?
R: Cansei De Ser Sexy/CSS, The Hives (Black & White), Oasis
W: Oasis, The Beatles, The White Stripes, John Mayer (Continuum), Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Show Your Bone), Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Arctic Monkeys
N: Blur (Park Life), Oasis, Asian Kung Fu Generation, Train (Drops Of Jupiter), The Beatles, RHCP (Mothers Milk),
Our Lady Peace, U2,dll.
A: Albert Hammond Jr., Kings Of Leon, The Racounters

Bagaimana biasanya proses penulisan lagu terjadi?
Awalnya Windy bikin mentahnya dulu kaya chords, lirik dan nyanyiannya secara akustik trus kita aransemen bareng-bareng deh

Ada ngga band-band lokal yang menurut kamu oke untuk diberi perhatian lagi?
R: 1900 Yesterday, TDS, Inpirational Joni
W: TDS, Pestolaer, Time Bomb, Bad Boys Blues, Adrian Adioetomo! Hidup blues! hehe…
N: Lipgloss, The Telephone (Purwokerto), Homogenic, The Wicked (yang ini band temen, inspirator kita semua hehe…)
A: Pestolaer, Teenage Death Star, Speaker 1st, mereka pda mau ngeluarin album kan.

last words?
R: Keep Fighting, keep struggling and Keep D.I.Y !
A: Viva la Rock ‘n’ Roll !
W: Don’t ever give up however you hurts ! (I mean for the bands)
N: There is always something!

How are you now?

I am fine, lots of project in progress, so much that I can not put my mind together sometimes, but to live in China is a good environment to make the work less heavy.

How is the Hip Hop scene in China nowadays?
From my perspective, Hip Hop scene is made by DJ in clubs. But nowadays in China, I can feel many Hip Hop influences in ads, cinema… even the pop music sounds Hip Hop!

In terms of local artist, Chinese Hip Hop is promoted by DJ Woordy (first ranking in the DMC China championship) who participates in worldwide competitions.

How’s the songs production usually done (made)?

For me, what can make me start a project are directly link to my feelings and these feelings can be pushed by a noise, a sound, a sample or a movie… Sometimes I am just sitting in front of my desk and trying to figure out something, without knowing from where to start and how the project will end. I could also start a project in collaboration with others artist…

Noisy Crane - melancholy lo-fi

noisycrane2
how are you guys now?

We’re currently preparing to take a tour this March in the state of Ohio. We’re looking forward to it and hopefully we’ll have a good time. We’re also working on playing more shows in Kentucky and recording a new full-length record of 14 songs which might be called, “Limestone Walls and Frozen Falls”. All this while going to college full time and working. It’s pretty chaotic sometimes. :)

do you mind to share some story about the music scene in Lexington?

The music scene here is diverse, even though Lexington isn’t a large city. It’s best known, I believe, for noise rock and experimental/fluid style bands such as Warmer Milks. It has a large number of classic folk musicians, old and young, and a few years ago there was a pretty large hard-core scene. It’s all over the place which makes it fun.

tell us more about your release.

“Portmanteau” was our first official full-length release. It was recorded on a Tascam 8-track cassette Portastudio in our bedrooms and mixed on my computer. The name comes from an old French word which describes a new word created by combining two other words, such as “motel”, which is motorist + hotel. To me, the 10 tracks we had recorded for the record were like a portmanteau of musical ideas that we had been playing around with, and also it just had a nice sound to it. The songs themselves range from pretty standard folk to near pop or western american lonesomeness. We tried to write it so that most of the songs flow into each other or blend to form a unified whole.

if people ask you to mention five things that would be best to describe your music, what would that be?

Hmmm… We’re lo-fi, melancholy, simple, spirited, and fun.

any unforgetable moment while you guys on tour?

Well, we haven’t played outside of Kentucky yet but our first tour is coming up in March, One of our most memorable times playing a show was at the release of Portmanteau here in Lexington when we had friends join us on stage to help play the songs as close to the record as possible. We sometimes had as many as 10 people on stage. It was the craziest and most confusing show we’ve played.

we’re kind of enjoying your songs “come to me” what’s the story in it?

I’m glad you enjoy it. It’s not autobiographical, but it’s basically about someone who moved to a new city after a relationship went sour but finds themselves still being pursued by their ex, and isn’t happy about it. They’re still pretty bitter and want to move on but their ex doesn’t.

any good underated bands you can share our readers?

Hmm… Another local Lexington band, The Who Noes, don’t play many shows but are truly awesome, as well as another Kentucky band, Bedtime, who is just beginning to get their name out. Louisville, KY bands Wax Fang and Your Black Star are known, but deserve to get even more attention. They’re some truly awesome rock. Paleo from New York City plays some amazing folk.

Luk - pleasure, dream, voyage and fall in love

lukbw01

Meet Luk, the electronica band from Ukraina.

how are Luk now ?

We are ok. We are planning to start working on our new album this year. You will be able to listen to one of our new songs soon. We’ll present it on our official compilation that will be released in a few months. But unfortunately this compilation of our best songs will be released only in Ukraine. If some European labels want to work with us, we are glad to cooperate.

if you’ve been asked to mention five Verbs that would best associated to your music, what would that be?

what is the best record you bought in the last 6 months?

Radiohead “In rainbows”. In our humble opinion, Radiohead is one of the best modern groups. Thom Yorke and his group made revolution in music with album “Ok computer”. After that they have modified the style of group and have proved that their views on music don’t go beyond guitar music. Doublet (albums “Kid A” and “Amnesiac”) has hit the mark. Radiohead have won on the territory of electronic music just as they made it before on other territories. May be new album of the group isn..t so much revolutionary, but melodic of these songs is beautiful and the voice of singer comes straight to the heart.

Would you mind share us some stories about the music scene in Ukraine? any other nice band you can recommend our readers?

Ukrainian music scene is rich in perfect groups. Most of these bands are underground acts, but they are making really interesting music. For example, a group from Dnepropetrovsk, that has very strange name “…and my friend truck” consists of only three musicians: bass-guitarist, drummer and singer. It can seem unusual, but most of their songs have pop-rock structure and it’s easy to imagine them on European radio stations.
Kharkov is playing a remarkable role in Ukrainian music life. Group 5nizza from Kharkov was very popular in former Soviet Union countries. Two boys - guitarist and singer – made the mixture that consisted of reggae, rock and pop. Now they have own projects, and their groups are one of the most interesting things that are going in Ukrainian music. There are also a lot of perfect jazz groups in Kharkov.
And at last we want to recommend your readers group that is surely one of the Ukraine’s brightest diamonds. It is called “Esthetic Education”. Most of their songs are in English, and really it is such a feeling that they came to us from an English club of the 60’s. Belgian-Ukrainian-Russian frontman Loui Frank reminds of Jim Morrison (frontman of the Doors), his energy has such strength that it’s hard to find another example. But this doesn’t mean that the style of this group came only from the 60’s. Attentive listeners can find in their music influences of the modern music, such as post-rock groups (Sigur Ros, Mogwai), post-country singers (Sufjan Stevens, Devendra Banhart). But we can say in spite of this influences “Esthetic Education” is one of the most distinctive groups in Ukraine.

five best albums that actually stay in your heart forever?

1. Bjork “Post”
2. Air “Moon safari”
3. Mum “Finally we are no one”
4. Muse “Origin of symmetry”
5. The Doors “The Doors”

what is your top five songs that heavily rotate on your playlists?

1. Portishead “Only you”
2. Muse “Unintended”
3. Massive attack “Teardrop”
4. Goran Bregovich «Sex»
5. Bjork vs. Thom Yorke «I’ve seen it all»

last words?

We want to wish all of you to be always elated. Listen to the music, that your heart says to you.
