Interview with Eric Copeland from Black Dice

No Comments 07 September 2007

An interview with Eric Copeland from Black Dice, a noise/rock experimental band based in New York. By our lovely Marcel Thee.

750652_356x237

1. Why did you decide to compile some of your 12′ materials for the new album along with newer songs?

The idea was that at it’s conception; to release all the songs on vinyl through other labels and then just have a CD and digital release at the end of recording it all. Initially, we’d intended to put out the CD, but when Paw Tracks came along, it made sense to work with the instead. Plus, I like having all the songs on some special little vinyl releases, with the posters. The last five songs will also be released as a 12” on Paw Tracks at the same time as ‘Load Blown’.

2. In terms of the writing and recording process, how is it different from your previous albums, such as Broken Ear Record/Creature Comforts? Did Eric’s solo album influence it in any way?

We spent a long time working on this one, on and off. It was also the first one where a lot of it was created in the studio to some extent. And it was also the first one where we recorded ourselves a little bit, which was an entirely new experience. ‘Hermaprodite’ I made it all by self recordings, so I felt pretty capable in our practice space doing it ourselves.

3. Most Indonesian “noise/experimental” musicians tend to gravitate towards more electronic sounds rather than organic ones. Do you and the rest of Black Dice have any preferance in this matter? And why?

I’d say we all love electronic sounds and work with them to some extent. But we definitely don’t restrict ourselves to any one sort of sound. As long as we like what is being done with the sound, the source tends to matter less. We don’t really take a stance in this matter.

4. The earlier Black Dice materials was much more harsh and trash oriented, but had a more “traditional” song structure form. Do you see Black Dice infusing some of the more traditional aspects of songwriting again into future materials?

I don’t know if they were really ‘traditional’ arrangements or structures. But the music was different, as was the instrumentation. But I guess if you keep going, you eventually end up at some familiar places, to you or to your audience. But even then, how do you mean traditional?

5. Are there certain secret languages or cues that all of you have when writing and performing, in distinguishing parts of a song? Maybe as a signal to “move” the song from one part to the other? Do you have it written down?

Definitely, but not always. Sometimes we all have a tolerance that we act upon together to know when to do that. Sometimes one of us leads, while the others follow. Alot of it depends on how a set is moving, where it needs to go. So, for instance, some changes have to be initiated by one person as the others aren’t in a position to make the change alone/first. Sometimes we have to write it down, sometimes we just talk about it, sometimes its eye contact. It really all depends on the circumstances..

6. Was there any specific moment/inspiration when you decided this was the kind of music you wanted to make?

No, not really. We’ve been stumbling into these places pretty accidentally.

7. Which of your albums would you recommend to a Black Dice novice as an introduction to your materials?

Me, I’d always say the newest one. Or, I will sat ‘Creature Comforts,’ because it was hard for a lo of people to get into, but I also feel like is a good place to get on board with the trajectory of following up with the rest of the records.

8. Would it be okay if you share with us some your live equipment set up?

We play a guitar, some delays, pitch shifters, electronic drums, a sequencer, some minidiscs, a sampler machine, some mixing boards.. Nothing to exciting for gear people I don’t think..

9. What would be the perfect setting for listening to a later-period Black Dice record (Broken Ear Records, Creature Comforts, the upcoming Load Blown)?

I’ll sat that I usually think our records will be complimented by some serine setting, but they tend to sound real aggresive and urban in those surrounds. Now I’d say just taking a walk maybe. Maybe here in NY? Although I wish everyone could sit in a huge room with floor-too-ceiling windows, high up anywhere, with a huge sound system playing the cd, DJ’d with no song interruptions, all three in a row. That’d be perfect.

Alphawaves

1 Comment 16 August 2007

A year ago I was on a gig where a boy and a girl sits in front of two keyboards face to face. Not so long after they occupied the chairs, they started to play some beautiful tunes. A few weeks later they become Alphawaves. After some stunning performances, I decided too give them two question. And here we go…

Interview with Karolina Komstedt of Club 8

3 Comments 09 August 2007

Club 8 is a nice indiepop band from Sweden released under Labrador Records, after their release with FFWD Records a few years ago in Indonesia, they become a very influential indiepop sound here in Indonesia. We are lucky to catch their live in Bandung a few months ago. And now I’m trying to catch them again to answer some short questions, and talk about their future release “The Boy That Couldn’t Stop Dreaming”.

karolina

Hello Karolina, I’ve got a few short question to ask you… how are you?

I’m fine, thank you. This magic year 2007 has been so good to me, the best one in a very, very long time. It’s been full of surprises, creativity and love. Club 8 just finished the recording of a new album and i was more inspired than ever before. And the trip to Indonesia in March filled me with happiness and still does. And I’ve been working with a film script, something that I’ve been dreaming to do for a long time. I write it together with a Swedish author called Hans-Eric Hellberg and the script is based on his very controversial and debated books from the seventies. It’s a beautiful story about love between two very young people who live with their families in the same house.

Would you mention 5 (or more) records that had been influencing you until now?

Some of the records below have had a big influence on me as a person, some of them have influenced our music a lot and I think it’s quite easy to guess which ones.

  • The Field Mice: Coastal
  • Blueboy: If wishes were horses
  • The Smiths: The Smiths
  • The Radio Dept: Lesser matters
  • Felt: Poem of the river
  • Leonard Cohen: Songs
  • Television Personalities: Far away and lost in joy
  • The Sea Urchins: Stardust
  • Ingenting: Mycket vasen for ingenting
  • Mazzy Star: Among my swan

What is on your heavy rotation playlist lately?

  • Club 8:
‘The boy who couldn’t stop dreaming’
(the 12 song album which will be out in September)
It’s just finished and I can’t stop analysing every detail on it, to see if there are things that i want to change in the production. But that’s so silly, cause it’s being printed right now so i should leave it. But I’m happy to say that both me and Johan are very satisfied with it. It’s such a good feeling.
  • -Morrissey:
    ‘Your arsenal’
I just say one thing: the song ‘Seasick, yet still docked’ is so beautiful it hurts. My heart is too small for it.
  • -Labrador 100
Labrador records is our Swedish label and early this year they released a 100 song compilation including one song from each release from the start 1997 up to now, and Labrador’s very first album was actually ‘The friend I once had’ with Club 8. My absolute favourites on Labrador records are The Radio Dept, The Mary Onettes and Ingenting, which is the only band who sings in Swedish on Labrador.

Is there any band in mind you would recommend our readers to listen?

I recommend you go for all the bands I mentioned in the first question. Their songs will make you smile and cry and smile and cry… and afterwards you will feel soothened, comforted, awakened, cleaned and enlightened, more alive than ever and never lonely again :)

What do you miss about Indonesia after the show a few months ago?

I miss the whole thing… especially the people. I still think about Indonesia every day and i have SMS and myspace contact with quite a lot of the fans who were there and listened to us.

I don’t know why but I felt a very special connection to Indonesia. The friendliness and warmth of the organizers and the people in general, touched me.

cover_lab108 Any plans for the future release?

The next step is to release the second single, called ‘Heaven’ in the beginning of September and after that we’ll release the album ‘The boy who couldn’t stop dreaming’ in the end of the same month. Very soon we’ll start recording our 7th album and also tour a little. We’ve been invited to many Asian countries but we think we’ll play in China and Thailand to begin with.

Thanks for the time.

The very first public performance of the band was in March 2004, five months after it was formed. In their first two years of struggle, the unique musical characters of the band rapidly catch everybody’s attention in their every performances. With no other band to compare in their genre (which is a hybrid from classical pop piano, unique vocal character, powerful drum beats, catchy bass tunes and rock guitars) the somehow gloomy but funny band becomes a stand alone benchmark in Bandung’s independent music scene.

The rock love song and March of the lonely nights are two olive tree demo tracks released by the bands for radio play (the second track also appears on the demo cassette supplied by Ripple Magazine), and become number one indie track on two separate big radio stations in Bandung from October to November 2004.

The next demo track Miss you used for late night radio program for their background music illustration. Still looking for the right recording label to sign, in February 2006 Olive Tree released their first commercial single Winter Holiday under Jakarta’s join recording labels: Parc & Kenanga records in their compilation album: Riot The Thursday Riot Compilation in which features 17 old & upcoming Indie artists from independent music scene allover Indonesia.

In December 2006 Olive Tree finally release their debut album, self funded, self promoted and self distributed. The album contains 12 tracks and their singles quickly climbs to the top of indie charts in many radio allover major cities in indonesia. Interview with Bangkutaman

10 Comments 15 September 2006

bangkutaman They are a band of three that plays 60s-revival kind of music. On their attractive show performances, the usually-drunk vocalist/frontman, Acum, resembles those daily-smoking-pots hippies, but he wore Batik instead of the typical flowery-pattern clothes.

With a piece of paper and a pen, we tried our best to get Acum answers these questions, because apparently, under the local alcohol drink of lapen, he could only answer in English.

Which one of your songs would be a good representation of the band?
She Burns The Disco ? Titik Balik

What have you been listening to recently? Are there any other bands that have influenced your songwriting for Bangku Taman?

Francois Hardy ?En Vogue?. And our Influences for the band are: Bob Dylan, The Byrds, The Monkees, and Procol Harum.

A lot of great bands that we love tends to be on an indie label, and with their limited distribution power, would you consider signing with an obviously corporate major label
Nope, I don?t like major label

List the songs that you would like to put on, if supposively there would be a Bangku Taman?s Greatest Hits album.

  • Catch Me When I Fall
  • Satelit
  • Miracles Should Not Come So Soon
  • How Strange
  • Fantasi
  • Kera
  • Robby (The Graveyard is What You?ll See)
  • Solomon Songs (B-side version)

What is an honest music?

An honest music is.. A music that came with no pressure, let is flows freely, start smokin? pots and take the 1st chord.

Do you discover any good new band lately?

C?mon Lennon

Please recommend us some of the best songs you had written ever. And please tell us the story behind it.
Robby (The Graveyard Is What You?ll See). It?s about a son who rebel his father for the customs and traditions he had since he was born.

Lastly?
There?s no last, the music still continues ?

Interview with The Adams

12 Comments 03 August 2006

The Adams People said that they were a Weezer-esque kind of band, but this all-male victory full of distortion and harmony band always refused that kind of statement and clearly appoint themselves as The Beach Boys-esque-with-distortion kind of band. Well okay, while they still got those catchy tunes, falsetto singings and the funny melodies on stage why should we care about their so-called predecessors?

On the pen and piece of paper, we tried force Ario to answer these short questions about the band, but he eventually ask Indra7 (their manager) to do the work.

What?s the fascination with the word ADAMS?
(They drew the male/mars symbol)

What records have you been listening to lately?
Thin Lizzy

Even though The Adams still sometimes gets tagged as ?Power Pop?, a lot of reviews tends to praise the ?power? value of the music. Do you agree with this? Do you think that there is an extra ?power? value on your music that a lot of other bands just don?t have?
We think that music and power (or we should say ?soul?) should come in the same way in any kind of genre. For sure, our power were based on how we deal with each individuals in the band, in social live and sex lives! Hehe.

Musically, which bands influences your music?
The Beach Boys

Tell us the five ingredients of writing a The Adams? material?
Harmony
Distortion
Family
Love
Friendship

What legendary band would you say died and were reincarnated as The Adams?
Thin Lizzy, Dedy Stanzah, Enuff Z?Nuff

What would be the perfect setting for listening to The Adams? records?

Interview with Santamonica

15 Comments 30 June 2006

sanmon

Meet Santamonica, a nice indiepop band from Indonesia.

How are you today?

Fantastic, thanks for asking

The band is actually made up of people who’ve previously been in other bands. How do you think the members’ previous experience influence the music of Santamonica?

Do you mean Iyub? Because I (dita) have never been in a band before. Iyub’s other band Sugarstar (now Direct Action Group) is very different to Santamonica, music wise. He approaches to the songs very differently with Sugarstar, and as far as I know it doesn’t have any major influence to Santamonica music. I could say that those two bands are like two peas in different pods. :)

What are you approaching differently in Santamonica than your other projects?

I think Santamonica music is very intimate, it’s very personal and has feminine touch compared to Sugarstar, as there are only two people involved in the song writing process.

Your last E.P was, in our opinion, one of the best releases last year. Were you satisfied with the E.P? or were there some ideas you couldn’t put on the album?

We never thought of it as one of the best releases, but thank you for saying so. Of course we’re quite satisfied with it, although it only has three songs in it, and yes sometimes we’d criticize ourselves too hard when listening to the materials again and again, like the mixing of the first and second songs are not up to our standard as we did them only in a day. Initially, the E.P was intended as the gifts for our wedding guests, but there’re many people asking us to publish our songs, so we decided to make the e.p as our first release. As for the quantity of the songs, those 3 songs are enough for the e.p because they show how our music is; tad bit bossa nova, tad bit electronic, tad bit pop-ish, and most importantly albeit a little bit personal, the three of them have certain meanings for us; Serenade of Yellow Park is the first song we made together, Please Say Yes was the song that Iyub gave me when he proposed, and Sought and Found is about us together as a couple. So I don’t think we’d want to add more songs to the e.p.

How does the writing process in the band go?

It’s never the same, all depend on our moods. Usually I would ask Iyub to compose a music that has certain ambience or feeling; it could be cheerful, seductive or sad. Then we’d record it in our studio, when the music is done, I’d write the lyrics for it, sometimes the writing process would occur instantly when I listen to the song, and sometimes I could just get my old poems and re-write it to make it fit to the music.

Musically, which bands would you say influence you?

Antonio Jobim, Stereolab, classic Disney soundtracks, well I lost counts on our influences. There’re too many of them. Other than band I would say we got our influences from surrealist arts, film noir, and Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll.

Where did the name Santamonica came from?

Iyub told me he’s been a fan of some Monika records’ bands, like Contriva. So I guess that’s where he got the name from.

Which do you enjoy more, playing live or recording?

Both have different sensation, but for me I’d say recording because there’s where it all started. Playing live is nice too though, as we can interact with the audience and coping with different stage experiences.

What do you think is the benefit from having a female vocalist, who is indeed your wife?

Hahha, this is a tough question. I think because we’re a couple we tend to like the same things; music wise, we like the same bands, and our ideas are very similar. Iyub is a perfectionist and he could be tough to me sometimes during recording, but I wouldn’t get cross to him because I know that it’s for my own benefit, that’d be a different situation if the vocalist is not someone who knows him well. And as for him I think having his wife as a vocalist saves him some troubles, you know like not having to worry that your vocalist’s boyfriend getting jealous to you and forbid her to stay late for recording in the studio, you know all those hassles.

Any last words?

Our full length album will be released this year, and the title is Survivors of the Disco, so please wait! :)

Interview with Fall

4 Comments 07 June 2006

Interview with Jakarta’s rising Hardcore band, Fall, by our contributor, Rian Pelor.

fall

Skateboarding dan musik hubungannya sangat erat dan kebetulan kami mempunyai passion yang sama untuk kedua hal tersebut, jadinya kenapa tidak ?Skate together and rock together!?, intinya being with your friends all the time.

There will always be love and hope.

The beauty in being human.

?Anything can happen in music!?.

Istilahnya, the machine won?t work without a missing piece. Musik kami demikian karena detail masing2 anggota, kita semua punya share didalam penulisan. Kalau berantem pasti pernahlah, sampai santet2an, bro! Haha!

Much appreciated! You?re not alone. I can?t change the world, let alone the social or political climate, but at least I can remind people about being human and that we?re all the same. Think about it. You have to start from one, if you want to count to one thousand.

Fame? Fortune? Kepuasan pribadi? Changing the world?

Twenty something? Ahahahahah..! Thirty something kali?

Manggung is fun! How else should it be? Sharing your music with other people is a great feeling, man!

Makna Hardcore bagi masing2 individu di band ini tentunya berbeda beda, tapi yang termasuk maknanya bagi kami sebagai sebuah band adalah freedom to make your own choices, knowing what to do, being realistic, a positive and constructive way of thinking, respect and friendship.

Haha..! Si xTEJAx sudah straightedge cukup lama. He?s straightedge for himself, which is good! Vegan? But, if you?re dedicated enough, for sure you can pull it!

Kesepakatan? Aiiih! Kami bukan bisnis partner, bro!

Be supportive!

We are stoked on those kids! ?Generasi baru? seperti Too Late To Notice, Worst Case Scenario, The Deck, dkk juga seru seru! There are so many more young bands out there that are good! On other notes, saya juga kemaren ini menghadiri acara Hardfest dan senang melihat bahwa old school hardcore is here and kickin? it!!! Big ups to the bands who rocked that show! Older generation playas like Stepforward, Killed By Butterfly, Dagger Stab, Burning Inside, xThinking Straightx, Paper Gangster, Straight Out, Fragrant and others continue to produce great stuff!

Terimakasih doa restunya, kawan! Jangan lupa untuk membuka www.myspace.com/fall, check that out and don?t forget to check out our wonderful friends and bands there. Thanks to Rusty Indonesia. We appreciate the support from everyone! Don?t forget the respect! Skateboarding for life! Creativity now!

Interview with The Milo

31 Comments 24 February 2006

The Milo

Apa kabar The Milo sekarang?
The Milo kabarnya baik baik aja.

Bisa cerita mengenai rencana album remix nya?
Album remix themilo berjudul: interpretation. Masing – masing : Homogenic, Elektrofuxx, Space Astronauts, Nuffnuxx, DJ Tomatoes, DJ Gerry, Love & Affair

Kalo full album berikutnya?

anak anak sih sekarang lagi pada dengerin: sigur ros ? takk, engineers, coldplay – x&y, the beatles, muse, foo fighters – in your honor, malory, pink floyd, dll..

Ada rekomendasi album baru yang oke?
Kalo menurut The Milo sih mungkin sigur ros – takk, ya.

Rekomendasi band buat di tonton?
Live concertnya : pink floyd, muse.

Last words?
Tetap semangat! Hehe, cheers!

ya… disurabaya sekarang band-band lokalnya sudah siap release album…. ditunggu aja… gak kalah keren ama band-band lain lah. hehehe…. banyak yang harus di telusuri untuk kelanjutan scene indie di Surabaya? it’s not even easy as us pride

4. ceritain dikit tentang musik Friday dong.

if you see another seems to fin. jika kamu melihat apa yang ada di depanmu adalah sebuah akhir yang sama sekali ga pernah kamu pikirkan/harapkan…..

dan itu terjadi begitu saja…sangat cepat……..

kita berawal dari musik rock lawas, shoegaze dan sense of pop…..

5. kalian kan termasuk sering tur keluar kota. bagi tips nya dong.

link itu penting banget…. sharing sesama community. And do the social business

6. lagi dengerin apa aja nih sekarang?

next year….. insyaAllah januari rilis…. doain ga ada halangan ( lagiii )

), …. mereka kandidat kuat icon indie surabaya….

11. last?

Maybe our life is such a great moment that never been reach? it’s easier to feel the greatest moment by flew with our feelings than logic
