Myrrrr Community Gathering

Myrrr was formed by a group of young people that distributes records from abroad countries to Indonesia, with mostly is in electronica and avant garde music. To introduce themselves, they held a small show at RumahBuku last week, where we can see, hear and listen to some amazing performances like Tranquility, Soul Delay, Curah Melodia Mandiri, Neo Wax, Multi Narasi Analog and Aneka Digital Safari.

The venue was decorated with lamplight installations to create a comforting mood. We do greatly hopes that these young folks from Myrrr can keep their existence and grow bigger to support the music and noise scene in this country.

Monik Monday Breeze 2007 #01

Words and pictures : Eric W

Walaupun sayang belum kelar setlist mereka hujan gerimis membubarkan acara.

Lansung saja semua berteduh, dan menunggu waktu buka puasa ditempat berteduh.

Kekal is working on the NEW material

One of my favorite Extreme Metal band is working on the new material. And we all get psyched about it. Here a letter from Jeff

Kekal

Hi, I’m Jeff..
I’m releasing this update news on behalf of KEKAL..

Kekal have gone through some very tough times since last year, mostly due to the geographical factors, and we also have our own personal struggles that needed to be taken care of as first priorities.. I am living in Canada now, make it really hard to communicate with rest of the band members in Indonesia, and if we have time to talk, we prefer to talk more on personal things as close friends, rather than talking about Kekal and all the crap and utter nonsense that happens in the music business and music scene in general..

But, however, after sooo many times considering for possible options whether we should quit the band or put the band under eternal hiatus, or maybe even worse than those two, I have decided to persevere and keep the passion alive by continue working on the new material for Kekal’s next album, all by myself unfortunately, which I planned it to be released sometime in 2008.. Please note that Azhar Levi Sianturi and Leo Setiawan ARE STILL official members of Kekal up to this point, and we have decided to keep Kekal as a trio, even though they couldn’t contribute to this new material due to a lot of reasons.. We understand that it is better to keep it that way..

I’ve already recorded some new songs last winter as the first material from me that was written down, constructed, and recorded in Canada during wintertime and cold temperature (some external factors that made the musical atmosphere really dark), and after all this year’s spring-summer-fall long break, I plan to continue working on more songs this coming winter (depending on the financial situation), and put them together and master them as an album once they are finished.. The new material is very dark, extremely isolated, sorrowful, emotional, and introspective in nature, but yet they are heavy, and also marks as the most explored music I’ve ever done so far, although it isn’t as complex, progressive and abstract as “The Habit of Fire”..

Last but not least, we need all your support by buying “The Habit of Fire” CD/digital.. It will help us a lot financially to keep the band going.. If you wish to support us that way, please do not download the album illegally or buying the used CD from eBay, as those things won’t help the band financially..

I will continue to put the latest news on Kekal’s myspace Blog.. myspace.com/kekal

Bitterly yours,
KEKAL

Interview with The National

Interview with Matt Berninger from The National. By our lovely editor Marcel Thee.

thenational_big

Even though The National’s albums hasn’t been officially released in Indonesia, ever since the release of ‘Boxer’ and the ‘Mistake for Strangers’ single, you’ve garnered a lot fans here. Will it affect your writing, knowing that your music are being sung and praised by people internationally? Are you planning on releasing your albums or touring the Asian region, other than Japan?

It is a surreal feeling that our music is being listened to all over the world. When we started we thought only our friends and family would hear it. I’m very happy that there are so many people who connect to it. I doubt that it will change how we work and write. We only know how to do it this way.

thenational_boxer Why the title ‘Boxer’?

My wife Carin thought of the title at the last minute. A lot of the characters in Boxer are in the middle of some kind of struggle so it makes a little bit of sense but most importantly it’s just a nice simple word.

The druming on ‘Boxer’ is incredible and is very prominent in terms of production and arrangement. It seems almost like the main instrument on songs like ‘Mistaken for Strangers’ and ‘Brainy’. Was this a conscious thing? Do you arrange the drumming together as a band, or is it all Bryan?

It’s all Bryan. When he does something good we turn him up in the mix.

The guitar and bass, on the other hand, plays very minimalistic lines that seems more about nuance and ambiance than typical chords playing along. How do you approach the arrangements of these particular instruments? Was there a certain type of sound and players that influenced the guitar and bass playing on ‘Boxer’?

I think on ‘Boxer’ we were trying to experiment with more hypnotic meditative guitar and bass lines. Less about licks and more about mood.

What is your personal favorite National lyric?

Maybe “I’ll bring a nice icy drink to you.”

‘Slow Show’ has one of your most praised and quoted line, which was lifted from ‘29 Years’ of your self titled LP. How did it end up on ‘Slow Show’? What is the song about?

I thought it would be interesting to reuse a lyric from an earlier song to see how it could evolve in a new context. It also was just what ‘Slow Show’ needed. It’s about wanting to just go home to the one you love and stay there.

Your earlier material had more of a country/folk influence on the songwiritng. Do you see The National injecting back more of those influences on your future materials?

We never really know what direction we’ll be going ahead of time. We usually just start trying things and follow them. There is never a predetermined path.

You don’t tend to play much materials from your first album live anymore. Any chance of songs such as ‘Theory of the Crows’, ‘Bitters & Absolut’, or ‘John’s Star’ showing up on future setlists? Does the band have a favorite song to perform live?

I doubt we’ll go back to those songs. We try to focus on moving forward. My favorite live songs are ‘Squalor Victoria’ and ‘Pacing Like a Pro’ but everyone has different favorites.

Your hardcore fans seem to be torn between those who love ‘Boxer’ and those that love ‘Alligator’. If push comes to shove, what is your personal preference? And why?

I try not to pit them against each other but I’m very very happy with what we did on ‘Boxer’, especially in its warmth and general overall experience. I think its the best thing we’ve done so far.

The National is certainly one of the most workman-like bands today. What one advice would you give to off and starting bands?

Don’t try to be popular. Write stuff that you love and work very hard on it. Eventually people will find you.

Thank you very much for your time, answers, and of course the music! Any realistic chance of touring Indonesia soon?
Maybe. If we were invited and we could afford to come we’d be there.

Evergreen - Ballads Of The Cliché

balladsofthecliche
Ballads Of The Cliché
Evergreen (2007)
8.1

Track stand out berikutnya adalah lagu “Back in the old days” yang memang terinspirasi dari “two of us” nya The Beatles. Berusaha membangkitkan kenangan lama masa kecil dua orang sahabat.

Well okay… saya tidak mungkin memuji mereka terus menerus.

(erc)

A Rock Society (ARS), sejak pertama kali digelegarkan pada 13 April 2006, trengginas melaju mewarnai ranah musik cadas Bali. Kolektif Rock paling moncer lokal sekelas Navicula, Suicidal Sinatra, The Hydrant, Lolot, Nanoe Biroe; berkualitas nasional seperti Superman Is Dead, hingga kawanan pinisepuh musik Rock Bali 90an macam Croto Chip, Djihad, & Emocore Revolver, silih berganti berperanserta di ajang yang diselenggarakan rutin sebulan sekali tiap Kamis ini. Himpunan penggemar, pelaku & pemerhati musik Rock di Bali pun pada akhirnya bak memiliki wadah komunikasi serta sentra silang pendapat sekaligus bilik silaturahmi. Dan demi menjaga riuh dinamika agar selalu bernas, stabil & sinambung; para konseptor ARS tidak kemudian berhenti hanya menyelenggarakan pertunjukan musik saja. Langkah selanjutnya—selain menjejaki dunia maya lewat www.arocksociety.com–adalah mendokumentasikan jejak bersejarah ini dengan melansir album kompilasi “Moshpit Mavericks” sebagai representasi tajam bobot-bibit-bebet ARS pada khususnya, dan merupakan gambaran ringkas lugas progres musik cadas Bali pada umumnya: Dari Emocore (Painful By Kisses) sampai seniman slebor (Ed Eddy), virus Chicano (Devildice) dan racun Zeppelin (The Wheels), veteran Glam (Jeanie), sentimental Swingers (Telephone), pula pemula Punktronica (Discotion Pill); pekat & pedas merecoki antologi monumental ini. Ya, Moshpit Mavericks adalah Rock racikan Bali terkini. Nikmati & akrabi dengan besar hati.

Interview with KOOP

koop7

Here’s an interview with Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson from Koop, just a moment before their show in Jakarta Crossover Jazz Festival by Ryan Koesuma.

koop3koop6

Hi there, how many additional players did you bring for the show in Jakarta?

We brought, um, 5 people, a vocalist, a bassist, a drummer, a trombonist/percussionist, and a vibraphone/marimba player.

Did Yukimi Nagano come along?

No, there is basically just the two of us in the band, and we use a lot of vocalists to fill in our songs, and they have their own bands.

What’s the impact on “Come to Me” to be put on an episode on Grey’s Anatomy?

Well, it’s really great, that episode airs four weeks after the record was out in the US. That’s how the music label works nowadays.

The song “Forces of Nature” reminds me of Benny Goodman’s “Sing Sing Sing” from the drum beats and clarinets; did you sample the song for it?

No, I mean a lot of musicians have used the same drum beats from that song. It’s inspired from Gene Krupa though.

koop5koop2

The songs in your previous albums tend to be more eclectic than Koop Islands, do you have any special theme while you’re making it?

I can see your point; we tend to focus on songwriting nowadays. Koop Islands were inspired by Jazz music in the 30s.

What would be the perfect setting to hear your music?

The perfect setting? It’s just about like when you want to relax, you know, escape from everything.

What does the name KOOP came from?

Actually it’s a shortened form of a Swedish word that means “cooperation”.

Ok, thank you for your time

Thanks man, nice questions.
